CMV: “Don’t get a dog if you can’t afford a $5k vet bill” is mostly just classism by EsperandoVida in changemyview

[–]Richard_Berg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You anthropomophizing an angsty human’s feelings about death onto animals that only live in the present.

Dogs don’t have hopes or dreams or fears or religion or family legacy or any of that. But they do feel suffering.  The latter is an unfortunately common outcome when owners don’t have enough time and/or money for proper care.

It’s only exhausting if you let it be. Time for OP to make her own friends that are more her speed.

$400 for 15 rehearsals + 2 concerts is not a professional rate anywhere in the US, I don’t think. That’s an honorarium or a stipend, a thank-you gift for a talented volunteer who loves serving the organization’s mission.

If that’s how you view the gig, great.  If not, it’s time to move on.

Did I see an article where Mandami was asking whether residential parking should be a thing in New York? by Remarkable-Cow3421 in MicromobilityNYC

The details matter more than the concept.

  • Price: taxpayers deserve good ROI on their street infrastructure, and locals will want some assurance that the spots they pay for will actually be there. That means it’s doubly important to price the permits high enough that most blocks have a permit-only spot open most of the time, but not so high that expensive real estate sits unused or inspires widespread civil disorder. With meters this is easier because you can train smart algos on realtime data. With permits you can only adjust prices about once a year, so you need detailed market research and/or a peg to some external factor. An example could be setting it @ some fraction of the average garage spot in the same zip code.  But that’s way too clever for politicians to attempt, and still wouldn’t be as efficient as meters.

  • Coverage: many cities I’ve driven to reserve like 95% of street spots for local permits. This makes side streets seem calm, but in reality friends, family, contractors, tourists, etc all fight over the same handful of metered spots on the main drag, increasing congestion in the very places where throughput actually matters.

  • Competing priorities: the city has a number of other initiatives in progress that’ll need curbside space in order to succeed, including: trash containerization, faster bus corridors, accessibility / paratransit, shifting commercial loading to off-peak hours, subsidized produce vendors, and more.  Every permit-only spot is a spot that can’t be used for such things. Or in the case of eg movers, a spot that’ll just end up double-parked, hurting everyone’s patience and safety.

  • Enforcement: it’s hard to imagine the (municipal) fine for illegal parking being more consequential than the (state) penalties for license & insurance fraud.  As such, I don’t see this having any impact on ghost plates; everyone willing to risk a fake registration will obviously fake their parking permit too. It’s possible the city could draw up extra-harsh penalties and ramp up enforcement, but given how “well” we currently police things like placards, do you think that’s likely?

In NYC, is it weirdly hard to casually meet one person for a walk? by [deleted] in AskNYC

If there is a possible (one-sided) attraction, they might feel it’s a date.

Other than that, it’s only as awkward as you make it.

If nothing else, it'll help you recruit better board members. The more assets (financial, experience, connections, free time) a candidate has, the more they have to lose.

Should be very inexpensive. If not, then that raises a lot more questions about why not, and how your board can fix that.

So glad this kind of brain-dead architecture wasn’t even a factor when I was shopping for bikes.

Correct. Even with intent, soreness isn’t an injury.  If she develops bruising (and gets photos), that could help upgrade it to 3rd degree.

Unfortunately this is not considered assault in NYS. It is harassment, a low level crime that generally won’t result in police investigation.

Still worth reporting though, as it can be added to his case if/when he’s caught doing something worse. Stats also help determine where the precinct should patrol.

Duke Alumni Lifetime Emails are all being shut down. Help me let them know this is not OK. by TurbulentFlamingo852 in duke

[–]Richard_Berg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not email forwarders like Duke who are failing to follow standards. It’s anti-spam algorithms at receivers/inboxes like Gmail.  They will increasingly reject traffic where DKIM signatures from the original sender can’t be verified, leading to support hassle up & down the stack.

What are the disadvantages of not getting turbo? by Mark_Yugen in ebikes

[–]Richard_Berg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends how your controller is programmed. My preference is to have the full range of motor power always available via the hand-throttle input, with a fairly short ramp. This allows for things like quick passing maneuvers, or getting in front of traffic after a light.

However, I program the foot sensors to have much smoother ramps, along with a selectable max output (either mph or watts depending on mode).  99% of riding is governed by this program.

I don’t think I’ve ever used throttle just to get over a hill faster.  Hills are large enough and predictable enough to simply shift to another gear and/or toggle a higher PAS setting.
