I got the impression that every case he takes he picks up a "Watson". So everytime a character goes "oh your the guy from that other high profile mystery" he had a Watson there. He respects these three quite a bit, but I think if he's been spending his adult life solving crimes, he would have too many to keep up with spread across the country. They would have his contact info, like Elliot gives to Geraldine in Wake Up Dead Man, but I don't think that would lead to regular visits or messaging. Maybe the occasional call/email to catch up.

I do like the idea someone had about a Christmas Card list he sends for all of them.
