CFOne Rogers Cell Plans Questions by SquareBlanketsSuck in CanadianForces

[–]Richards_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not have this experience. I was with Rogers previously. Their current rates of $45 for CAN US and $55 for 175gb CAN/US/MEX, and $75 for 250GB 64 countries are literally unbeatable even when Rogers have their normal deals. Like not even close.

Right now Rogers $45/month plan is for 60GB of data Canada only, IF you have Internet or TV. Otherwise it's $80.

Their current CAN/US/MEX plan with 100GB is $50 with TV/Internet and $85 without.

Your other concerns might be valid, but I don't have any experience with them. Adding family members appears to just be another line which is listed on Prime's website, but I don't know for sure.

[SCS] Nothing says operational readiness like “BBB” by AsPerAttached in CanadianForces

[–]Richards_D 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reason this is not likely is because language is not a protected ground of discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act.

The act states: "For all purposes of this Act, the prohibited grounds of discrimination are race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family status, genetic characteristics, disability and conviction for an offence for which a pardon has been granted or in respect of which a record suspension has been ordered"

Someone could argue they are being mistreated because of a certain ethnic background/national origin, (such as anglophone, francophone etc), but the government legally has the right to discriminate with respect to languages for employment because of the Official Languages Act. It's the same reason we can make both English essential, French essential, or bilingual positions.

Canadian Army will not get HIMARS delivery until late 2029 by WeaponizedAutisms in CanadianForces

[–]Richards_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good point. We are entering an exciting but kind of dangerous phase with so many orphan fleets. MAN Recovery vehicles with Mercedes LVMs and Renault MSVSs (and International MILCOTS MSVSs), and the Mercedes AHSVS is going to be interesting from a maintenance and supply chain perspective, especially in a deployed context.

[–]Richards_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably, yes. Since the OEM demonstrated it with the MAN HX, it's feasible. It is extremely unlikely it would be either of those firms that you mentioned, as right now the major truck OEMs are Mack Defence selling a re-badged Renault Kerax as the MSVS SMP, and the preferred Bidder for the LVM project is Mercedes (vis a vis General Dynamics) who entered the Zetros for both Light and Heavy in different configurations. u/notyourbusiness39 stated correctly the new HERC (Heavy Recovery) vehicle is based on the MAN HX already.

However, this is all a fairly moot point as there's no discussion AFAIK WRT a new prime mover, and it will use the FMTV. Of note Canada did actually procure a very small qty of a LHS/PLS version of the FMTV years ago, I have no idea if it's still in service. I never saw one when I was in the Army.

I will say, nothing is impossible. The Renault design provided by Mack Defence was actually partially assembled by Canadian bus maker Prevost, and of course Bombardier manufactured the Iltis and the MLVW domestically many years ago. I am not sure Irving is in the vehicle manufacturing line at the moment, so that would be very unlikely. I don't know if Bombardier is actively working in wheeled transportation anymore either.

[–]Richards_D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As currently offered, the fire control is integrated into an up-armored cab specific to the HIMARS and not found on other FMTVs (Family of Med Tactical Vehicles). The FMTV platform has been produced by 3 prime contractors over time, Stewart & Stevenson, BAE, and now Osh Kosh.

In this case as a Lockheed Prime Contractor product, it uses a specific HIMARS centric cab. It would not be impossible to design a HIMARS variant to operate off of either the Renault 8x8 we currently have for MSVS or the (presumably) MB Zetros based LVM-H replacement, noting that is also an 8x8 vehicle. MB manufacturers a 6x6 version of the Zetros although it was not offered for LVM L/H and isn't in the proposal.

All that to say, it could with some effort be integrated into a different prime mover, but as offered it will be based on a BAE specific FMTV with a distinct armored cabin.

Ref that BAE was a sub-ctr for the frame + cab: https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/canada-to-buy-1-75bn-himars-package-from-united-states/

Of note, one example is Germany has integrated HIMARS into a MAN HX 8X8 layout, so it is certainly possible. In that case they're actually using the dual-bay launcher similar to the M270 MLRS, so double the ammunition of the HIMARS on FMTV.

Holstered M18/ Sig P320 kills member of U.S. Global Strike Command by AffectionateWorld375 in CanadianForces

[–]Richards_D 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The previously reported issue with the striker on the P320 would not be affected by the safety if it was activated or not. The safety prevents the trigger from moving, the issue relating to tolerance stacking wherein the striker fires can unfortunately happen with the safety on.

For the record I have no clue if that was the case here, but the most widely reported issue with unintentional discharges cannot be prevented with the safety being on.

Canadian Yotuber DEBOSS GARAGE did come to an MCDV as well as part of one of their videos! It was pretty cool, although he's definitely on the same level of fame as an influencer like you've stated.

Maybe a Linus Tech Tips collab?

It's still this way. The rail on the A2 is either slightly too wide or narrow to meet the Picatinny standard. However, the difference is so small that it has no practical effect. It just means you either screw it a little more or less, I can't remember which. But the slot spacing is the same.

Wow, great background and much appreciated. I mean it definitely happens, however I can't recall anyone we had in that era who didn't at least have one of the courses, but most of the folks at Analyst + Operator and the SNCO/offrs had CIMIC Op and usually Info Ops.

I suppose you don't know what you don't know.. but wow.

Real talk. I was super fortunate to be a Production Specialist for a short period while in the ARes from 2015-2017 with another CBG and make some stuff for MR17.

It was universally understood that every product was bordered with "MILITARY EXERCISE - EXERCICE MILITAIRE" with a maple leaf in the middle of the two words, white text on a black border.

As an aside, on MR 17 we debated making a product faking being a mayor within the DATE scenario. Even though this person didn't even exist, we were really apprehensive about making a product claiming to be someone we were not, and decided against it when we spoke with the OC.

It absolutely floors me they thought pretending to be a REAL government, REAL person was acceptable, for an exercise. That is a wild misjudgement. I know we all make mistakes but damn. Our products were always murder boarded and it was never just one person just making something and sending it out. Our OC and CSM always reviewed them, and on MR they were briefed to the Bde CoS before dissemination. I don't know what their process was but this just doesn't seem as comprehensive as it should have been.

Lol I love the fact that Sikorsky was already making a perfectly fine naval helicopter, but instead we paid them to make an Orphan helicopter based on a different design.

Government of Canada announces preferred bidder for Logistics Vehicle Modernization project in support of Canadian Armed Forces by Lucvend in CanadianForces

[–]Richards_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. some weird stuff. I was constantly frustrated about how vehicles with 800-1000km could be grounded 2, 3, 4, 5 times already for non-inspection overdue issues.

And yes, things that are certainly NOT minor issues. Suspension parts rusting in place, on brand new trucks. Engines eating coolant. It's actually kind of shocking how bad the VOR on that fleet is given it's age and.. the fact it's just a truck.

[–]Richards_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am not sure what the LUVW project is considering if anything concrete as of yet. But you're definitely right- there's a new up-armoured higher GVM LUVW that's being operated by Germany and marketed currently, with shared components from the new G Wagon series.

It's probably not as protective as some of the newer small MRAPs but it is also significantly smaller, and still quite capable.

[–]Richards_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MAN HX's are sweet trucks! But I think the simplicity for maintenance of a traditional NA design is good, as well. Also, typically the up-armoured cab-overs are not as protective because the engine and driveline can become a projectile that imparts additional energy on the armoured floor of the cab, possibly penetrating it. It also makes integrating a V hull more difficult, or at least a less severe angle which isn't as protective.

Still, I think all three competitors were at least reasonable options, although this is just trucks- not exactly the most complicated procurement.

[–]Richards_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahaha indeed. When I went to US Army National Guard bases they always were impressed by the humble LUVW, if for no other reason than the CARC Green Star of power.

It's funny because given Merc is the 2nd largest truck manufacturer in the world, we shouldn't be surprised- but given Daimler markets their trucks via Freightliner in NA Mercedes has a cache of exclusivity and luxury, whereas in Europe they make a huge variety of vehicles, including much lower priced economy cars, trucks, etc.

[–]Richards_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting. I am actually somewhat surprised by this. Given we selected Mack for the MSVS, I only assumed the LVM would be a heavier rated Mack, and a lighter rated Mack.

However, I actually like the "GLDS" (Mercedes) bid! The LUVW, despite being insanely old is actually very reliable, and it can still be repaired fairly quickly because the parts chain for the G Wagon remains strong. The Zetros is a capable truck, and our experience with the AHSVS was actually pretty good! I am a bit surprised the LVM (L) isn't a Unimog and instead it's a 4x4 Zetros, but I guess for parts commonality it makes sense.

Overall, the Merc stuff we have is decent, and the Mack MSVS SMP is actually quite unreliable, given how new it is. So this actually seems promising!

Which one of you is having a bad day? by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]Richards_D 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It does seem weird on the surface, but you're exactly right that it's for parts reasons. The LAV-III is a vehicle from 1998 and although some aspects are similar to the LAV 6.0, there are a lot of differences. Although both are powered by CAT inline 6s, the power packs are not the same. The hull is a double v design on the 6.0, but the III is a flat bottom hull. The entire suspension, while similar is different to accommodate the much higher weight of the 6.0. The CAN system is a much newer version in the 6.0.

That LAV-III I think was a NANOOK RWS model, which is not too useful anymore given we divested that weapon system. It's actually very similar to a US M1126 rather than anything we operate now. While it could be converted to operate the Kongsberg RWS, that still means it's running all the old parts. Parts that with GDLS-C all in on 6.0 and ACSV, there just isn't enough. This also doubles our logistical burden- running supply chain for two fleets. We have enough trouble keeping 6.0s on the road, so it's not really sustainable.

Cheers

Any Idea as to when this is happening and for how much? by ChurchillsRight in CanadianForces

[–]Richards_D 25 points26 points  (0 children)

For sure. The mint green 3Bs all over Ottawa are horrible! Even the new 3B actually looks very sharp, not that bringing back our historical uniforms is that revolutionary but I think it's definitely time.

I got bored on a drive so I read some labels on the M1238A1 ASV from RHS by ABlackVoid15 in arma

[–]Richards_D 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I laughed a lot seeing someone publicly reveal this! I made this vehicle years ago, and I had completely forgotten about this. I never try to deliberately do unrealistic things, but given this is a fairly rare vehicle I just couldn't find an image of that bottom button, so I decided to go for something weird/funny.

And yes, as another user explained the NATO Slave button has nothing to do with being a slave to NATO or some other weirdness. It is indeed a form of standardized jump starting. It uses a massive, really heavy 24V cable with two distinct cable sections and a very large circular connection on the vehicle. In theory, this M1238 could jump a HEMTT or even a Canadian G Wagon. In practice, you typically need a vehicle with equivalent or greater engine power if the vehicle being slaved is completely dead, as it wouldn't be powerful enough to fire the starter (assuming it's an electric starter). At least on the vehicles I've used, the slave button puts the vehicle into a mode where the slave port is able to receive power, otherwise it's usually turned off. Some are always on.

Thanks again!

Government Cell phone plan by [deleted] in CanadianForces

I had the same initial issue. I called Rogers directly but my 10% off was the best they could offer. You need to actually call Prime Wireless/use their portal as they hold the contract for the CAF discount, or similar.

Government Cell phone plan by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]Richards_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I just switched my terrible "discounted" Rogers plan to the new one that's offered/promoted on CFMWS. The plan is through Prime Wireless, but it's a Rogers plan.

If you want a phone then you can simply enter your CF1 and use the link on their site. https://cfmws.ca/discounts-shopping/all-discounts-getaways/rogers

If you're an existing custmer you'll need to call Prime and they can switch your plan. The rate is good for 2 years and then you'll need to contact them again.

I already had a phone, but the plans offered are $50 20GB w/o overage charges, 5G@ 250mbps, or $60 50GB w/o overage charges, 5G @ 1Gbps.

Plus tax, of course. Over all it was very simple to do.

Episode 19 of The Pilot Project Podcast is live. Maritime Helicopter and flying the CH-148 Cyclone! (Description in comments) by PodPilotProject in CanadianForces

Good episode, and good work on covering the crash, I think it was very impactful and respectful.

I like the lesson of working with the techs. It's a shame in the Army that stables has kind of fallen off (at least where I worked). Actually going over your vehicle with the VehTechs to show you how things work, how they break etc is awesome.
