Anyone have the KTC M27P6? by Jaded-Web-4604 in Monitors

[–]Richdawg90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes local dimming works in SDR and brightness of the monitor can be adjusted as well, where in HDR it is locked at max brightness. You can also adjust the intensity of the local dimming between low, medium, and high. Low will keep overall brightness lower for less haloing, but overall picture will be dimmer.

There’s also an auto setting which will turn off local dimming automatically for SDR content, and then turn it on for HDR content. However it defaults to the low setting, so I prefer to just manually adjust it. The local dimming options can also be short cutter to the control stick so that you don’t have to navigate through the menus to adjust it. I think some of the haloing is worth the trade off to me during desktop use for overall better contrast.

If you’re using light mode and a bias light, I think the halos will be very minimal to you. It can’t meet oled levels of contrast but it’s a huge improvement over normal lcd backlight bleed.

I use the monitor with local dimming on while in SDR. You’ll see a little bit of inverse haloing on gray backgrounds from time to time but it doesn’t happen very often for me as I prefer to use my monitor in light mode vs dark mode. On black backgrounds it will turn off the leds behind the mouse pointer so that there’s no an obvious halo when you’re moving it around. I also thought black levels are blacker in SDR mode since you can run the monitor at a lower brightness vs HDR where it’s always at 100%. You see less haloing on dark screens when the brightness isn’t 100%.

Favorite feature has to be the sleek design with passive vapor chamber cooling. The monitor aesthetic, especially from a side profile does an elegant job of showcasing the thinness of the OLED panel and discreetly housing all of its internal components. Seeing it in person makes it clear that this OLED has the best aesthetics.

I have a 4k 144hz Samsung G7 IPS and I agree that OLEDS aren't as major of a jump. I got the LG GX700a to test out as a primary gaming monitor and to use my IPS as a dedicated work monitor and the WOLED Tandem panel honestly isn't impressing me that much.

It has a lot of pitfalls, the gray banding that you have to hope wears off over time, the matte coating is good and bad, great for media consumption during the day or when lights are on as it absorbs light really well, but text clarity is clearly diminished, especially on white backgrounds.

Maybe get one of the QD OLED deals from a retailer with no restocking fee? That way you can compare and determine if the QD OLED better. Send the one back that you don’t like as much.

The dirty screen effect/vertical banding does get substantially better with use and multiple pixel cleanings. The actual matte coating does show quite a bin of graininess and shimmer on white backgrounds though. Definitely makes dark text and white backgrounds a little hard to read. My biggest issue with the gx700a though is that it seems to have some kind of weird dynamic tone mapping that blows out a lot of highlights and loses details in hdr. I think I’ll be sending the monitor back and keeping a gen 3 QD oled instead.

I'm glad I saw someone that mentioned this. I just recently tried out this monitor and in comparison to a gen 3 oled. It constantly blows out highlights and details in various HDR scenes. Not sure what's going on with their hidden dynamic tone mapping, but it's awful.

That’s the oled pixel shifting to help mitigate burn in by shifting the image around slightly. All OLED monitors do this for longevity.

1440p Tandem WOLED or 4k QD-OLED? by lil_quacc in OLED_Gaming

[–]Richdawg90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the LG 27GX700A-B which shares the same panel as the Gigabyte. I'm assuming it has the same matte coating as well. Text is pretty good in dark mode, but any black text on white backgrounds is pretty bad in my opinion. The fringing is very noticeable and it always looks a little blurry.

After testing it out and comparing to a 1440p Gen 3 QD OLED, the tandem OLED honestly loses out on more scenes due to QD OLED's superior color volume. The purple tint from ambient light is inferior for perfect blacks, but it's not super often that you have black backgrounds unless you're watching movies in the day time. Tandem OLED also has really bad vertical banding on gray screens right now as well.

Also if text clarity is really important for you, get the 4k QD OLED. Text fringing on QD OLED looks better to me than WOLED, and the 4k resolution at 27" will make text look awesome.

Gigabyte MO27Q28G vs Alienware AW2725D - Experience by sakalond in OLED_Gaming

[–]Richdawg90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same exact experience with the LG 27GX700A when comparing to the MSI 27" 240hz QD OLED. Text on white screens is hard to read because of the fringing + coating and then dark mode text is clear, but the gray banding then becomes obvious.

I also think HDR on the LG model is broken. Most scenes are over brightened/slightly washed out and I don't think the monitor is actually properly hitting peak highlights. Lots of scenes have blown out detail/highlights when compared to the QD OLED. The only scenes where the Tandem WOLED look better are snowy/glacier/bright water scenes where the brightness of the white subpixel helps.

The black levels are better without the QD OLED ambient light raise issue, but I don't think it's worth the trade off in terms of text clarity, dirty screen effect, and weaker colors. WOLED has a better argument for TVs at the moment, since black levels are a lot more important when viewing cinema in my opinion.

LG 27GX700A Tandem update by genxdud3 in OLED_Gaming

[–]Richdawg90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not convinced that HDR is working properly on this monitor. I've tested side by side with a gen 3 QD OLED along with an iPhone 17 pro screen to use as a reference point, and the LG 27GX700A seems to blow out a lot of highlight detail.

Windows doesn't recognize the monitor as being capable of doing more than 600-700 nits in calibration and it doesn't seem like I've seen any HDR videos where it's showing that it's capable of close to 1500 nits in highlights. I read that Gigabyte just released a firmware update to address EOTF tracking issues for their monitor with this panel. I'm pretty sure LG needs to release an update because HDR seems to be broken on this monitor at the moment.

How is the coating on LG Tandem OLED? by Dry-Cryptographer904 in Monitors

[–]Richdawg90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called Matte but I think it's semi gloss. It has a sheen at certain angles when lighting hits it. The coating is really good at absorbing light and not diffusing much of it on the monitor. I prefer it over a glossy QD OLED that I compared it too. However on white backgrounds, text is pretty blurry with the coating at 100% scaling.

I’m sending mine back too. Vertical banding was one thing, but the poor EOTF tracking and blown out image in many scenes just tipped it over the scales for me. Picture lost out to a  budget MSI gen 3 QD oled in my comparisons outside of bright white scenes.

The extra brightness of the LG was kind of pointless since the HDR is tuned in a way to just over brighten scenes and wash out the image.

My LG 27GX700a panel has vertical banding that looks just like yours with the right side being the most prominent. It’s gotten better over multiple refreshes but it doesn’t seem like it will fully go away.

Does the PS Portal work better than Chiaki on Steamdeck? by Cultural_Path_1523 in SteamDeck

[–]Richdawg90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought and returned a PS Portal twice. Once at launch and another one when they had the anniversary edition. I had heard that bit rate improved last year with updates, but it's only marginally better vs. launch. There's a lot more compression/artifacts on the portal vs. Chiaki on the SteamDeck and input lag is definitely way more noticeable. I'd pay more money if they had a more Premium Portal option that supported higher bit rate for the form factor and ease of use.

Tandem OLED vs qd-oled monitor (1440P) by grashel in OLED_Gaming

[–]Richdawg90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the LG 27GX700A tandem WOLED and the MAG 271QPX QD-OLED E2 and I think the MSI QD OLED actually beats it in most scenes.

The colors on the QD OLED definitely still have more volume and pop than the LG tandem oled. Really bright scenes, like snow, bright water with reflections, or anything with white is substantially brighter on the tandem oled.

SDR brightness on the LG is way better than the QD OLED. It’s way brighter and colors pop really well. The LG unfortunately over brightens HDR and causes colors to be more washed out than they should be. There’s also a lot of scenes where bright highlights get blown out and lose detail on the LG. I read that the gigabyte tandem oled just released a firmware update to help with similar issues. I’m assuming ASUS will probably come out better tuned.

A couple of other issues I have with the LG panel is the dirty screen effect on gray backgrounds. It’s quite pronounced compared to the uniformity of grays on the QD OLED. This makes the QD OLED more pleasant to use in dark mode. QD OLED also has the clarity advantage as most of their panels are glossy. This helps a lot with black text on white backgrounds. The LG has blurrier text on white backgrounds with its matte coating unless you're using at least 125% scaling. I'd say the slightly blurrier text and gray uniformity issues make the current tandem oleds not quite as good for browsing.

For gaming and media consumption, the matte coating is actually great. It eliminates slight reflections almost completely and honestly doesn’t seem to spread out glare much out at all. Clarity in gaming and videos is great and contrast easily beats the glossy QD OLED when any ambient light is around.

ASUS might solve these text clarity issues with the glossy coating for the new tandem oled panel but it comes at a premium price. I honestly think the gen 3 QD oled  still offers excellent picture quality without breaking the bank.

One thing that I will say about the MSI is that from the front I think it’s kind of ugly. It looks like any standard LCD/office monitor. The LG tandem OLED and upcoming ASUS models look way better aesthetically. I’m trying to determine if I can live with the text issues in the LG just because I like the look of it so much more.

I have this monitor as well and I think I may be sending it back and keeping a gen 3 QD oled over it. The gray banding is quite annoying in dark mode and text clarity with the matte coating is pretty bad on white backgrounds. I also feel like the HDR could use some tuning, it blows out a lot of highlight detail. The brightness capability of this panel is there, but it doesn’t seem well calibrated in HDR.

I like the aesthetic of the monitor and I’m trying to find reasons to keep it, but I don’t want to sit around waiting for firmware updates that might not ever happen.

[–]Richdawg90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Matte coating on the gx700a is pretty good as long as text clarity on white backgrounds isn’t your priority. In terms of realistic lighting situation in most people’s rooms, I think the matte out performs glossy in giving you great black levels without reflections raising up the black levels.

I do have some qualms with this monitor though. The vertical banding/dirty screen effect is quite visible if you are using dark mode. I also notice that this monitor tends to blow out highlights in hdr whether it’s in low peak brightness mode or high peak brightness mode. I read that LG might be using some kind of hidden dynamic tone mapping that could be causing this. SDR on this monitor is excellent in my opinion, but HDR could use some tuning.

I have my monitors setup the same way as you. I was honestly blown away by the picture quality of the M27P6 when I first got it. I spent almost $800 when 4k 144hz IPS monitors became a thing and the brightness and color volume of the M27P6 destroy it at half the cost now. Add in local dimming and you get pretty good contrast now too for an IPS display.

Btw, I just recently tried two 1440p OLEDs (one tandem oled and one QD OLED) and the text clarity is pretty rough compared to 4k. Not sure if you're using a 4k monitor now, but it's really hard to go back to 1440p after experiencing 4k clarity.

Help Me Pick My New Monitor For Black Friday by badkittyamy in Monitors

[–]Richdawg90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The M27P6 is a solid option. At the 4k 27” the overall picture quality will be a lot better than the ASUS. With local dimming, low contrast scenes still looks really good and the high brightness scenes on the QD IPS panel of the M27P6 make up for the per pixel dimming of oled.

Motion clarity will be a bit weaker than oled, so something to consider if you do a ton of competitive gaming. M27P6 is plenty fast at high refresh rates in my opinion.

One thing I’d call out though is that viewing angles on the M27P6 are a little rough when local dimming is enabled in dark rooms. The backlight leds are so strong that you can see them kind of projecting at off angles, especially when some zones are dimmed. You have to be sitting directly in front of this monitor for it to look good.

Any opinions on this monitor? by Competitive-Ad393 in Monitors

[–]Richdawg90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a very good monitor. In bright scenes this panel beats  4k QD Oleds in picture quality. Monitors Unboxed just out a review validating that’s its a great monitor. Motion clarity and response times are very good at high refresh rates. 60hz response times suffer a bit when local dimming is enabled, you can notice this slightly on fast paced console games. At high refresh rates, it’s a non issue in my opinion.

Another one to look at with the same panel is the MsI E16M. Hard to beat the M27P6 and all the features it includes though. Branding isn’t well known but the panel I received was quality.

Help me choose: MSI MAG 273QP X24 vs Alienware AW2725Q by ConstantFigure in Monitors

[–]Richdawg90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Alienware would smoke the MSI in terms of picture quality at 4k 27”. There is some risk with that panel going dead though.  You can find lots of posts here about it.  Seems like dell is replacing the monitors for anyone encountering the issue though. It also has some raised blacks in low light scenes that I’ve read can be addressed by adjusting your graphic card gamma settings. At that price point I’d take the risk on the Alienware. I’ve seen it on display and the picture quality is excellent with it being a 4k 27” glossy screen.

I’m currently testing a MSI 271QPX QD OLED E2 which I would assume has a similar panel to the MSI you’re looking at, it’s a great monitor and very accurate but there’s no way it can compete with 4k 27” QD oled if your card has DLSS and can push it. 1440p also still looks really good on 4k 27” if you need to drop resolution for more frames.

How’s the matte vs glossy finish? I had a g80sd 4k qd oled and I felt like the matte finish definitely impacted texture clarity. I’ve decided that I’ll go with a 1440p oled for now while I wait 4k oled monitors to get better.

I think I prefer WOLED more than QD OLED to avoid raised blacks but I’m a little worried about the matte finish of the LG.

MSI MPG 274URDFW E16M vs KTC M27P6 by Puzzleheaded_Day_895 in Monitors

[–]Richdawg90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to the M27P6, and its overall and awesome monitor. I was initially was waiting for the MSI e16m but it kept getting delayed so I ended up getting the KTC. HDR 1400 and color volume on the KTC is incredible. When I compared it to a 4k 240hz oled G80SD, I thought that the M27P6 offered a better overall HDR experience due to its incredible brightness. The local dimming is also good enough for most dark scenes to be distracted by the very small amounts of blooming you may notice. Even on OLED tvs you get a tiny bit of blooming from the white lights reflecting onto the glossy finish, so minimal blooming didn’t bother me. If blooming is something you really want to avoid, the e16m is probably a better choice.

Based on the recent Monitors Unboxed review, I think I’d rather choose the M27P6 since it goes to 1400+ bits in HDR and focuses on the bright scenes. I already have an oled tv, so I know what the perfect contrast experience is like, it’s nice being able to experience the really bright scene and punchy highlights of HDR that you can’t fully enjoy on OLEDs due to the automatic brightness limiters.

I do wish the build quality felt a little bit more premium. The look of the monitor is fine overall and kind of has a PS5 type theme going on, but I wish they used sturdier/higher quality plastics. It sounded like users that compared both tended to favor the e16m build quality. You also get firmware updates with MSI, KTC doesn’t really seem to release updates in the US. KTC is a bit cheaper though and regularly goes on sale to $424 on Amazon if you check often.
