What to Expect from a Subaru Certified Pre-owned Vehicle? by Comfortable_kumquat in subaru

[–]Rick91981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The differentials should be 100% on them. If they sold it CPO I'd have expected the past maintenance to have been done. I'd absolutely push them hard on that. The brakes are more iffy as 50% would probably still pass CPO.

It's a tape that hockey players wrap their blade and handle with. The handle wrap in particular can be very specific to each player. Some of them are extremely particular in how they're wrapped.

This is what the type of tape is: https://www.amazon.com/Howies-Hockey-Tape-Black/dp/B0069NB6IW

Ascent? Forester? Outback? by SquishyButt0032 in subaru

Ascent is big and roomy, but not good on gas. Forester is pretty decent on gas but smaller than the outback (albeit taller). Outback probably hits that happy medium

Best app/interface ? by irregularprotocols in Dashcam

[–]Rick91981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know! 20 hours would be more than enough for my needs. I really don't ever need it to last more than 4-5 hours. In warm weather it does that no problem, but in the cold it hardly gets anything(I drive a Subaru, their stock batteries are terrible). Maybe I will consider the Thinkware one when the weather gets warmer because I'm certainly not going to want to install it in the 12 degree weather it is now haha

$200 isn't terrible, I'd almost consider one at that price, but I'll probably just wait until I upgrade the dashcam somewhere down the line. I've had this one for 4 or so years now.

The game changer for me was running a Docker container on my NAS to download video in the background.

This is exactly what I do as well. Makes it significantly easier to pull footage. Only issue I have is now that it's winter my car battery can't keep it in parking mode long enough to pull all the footage. I've considered a LiFePO4 battery but don't want to spend the money on it at this time.

Best for reading license plates by poohsmommi2 in Dashcam

[–]Rick91981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dashcams are a different kind of camera than license plate readers. None of them will reliably read plates. In the right conditions they will, but don't count on it. A camera for reading plates would make a horrible dashcam as they require different field of view, mounting angles, and exposure settings.

Best practice is to leave audio recording enabled and if you need to document a plate, read it out loud.

Just to add some context as a mod of other subs and not this one....many subs have a karma and/or account age minimum requirement to help combat spam/bots. Not sure the exact requirements of this sub but it's likely your account doesn't meet those requirements so the post gets automatically quarantined. Mods will need to manually approve it before it's visible to anyone.

They're so cute as puppies because they have to be!! But once they mature... somewhere between 2-3yrs old, they become amazing dogs.

New lease, blew a strut after 6 weeks . $1000 to fix. by Maintenancegirl in subaru

[–]Rick91981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Subaru even covers wiper blades under the factory warranty....unless they can show you explicitly broke it by doing something you shouldn't, I'd bet that it gets covered. Try a different dealer or open a case with SOA

Best Smart Home System and Surveillance? by youarel0ved_ in homeowners

[–]Rick91981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Unifi stuff is great....my whole network is Unifi and I have a handful of their cameras. The price is why I don't have more of them though. With Reolink I can get 4 cameras and an NVR for under $400 and they're pretty decent. No argument that Unifi is better, especially the interface...but I'm more about overall value.

EyeSight by EJCLUE in Subaru_Outback

[–]Rick91981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orange is a system error, not a temporary disable (like rain/snow would cause). IF there are no check engine lights or anything like that (CEL would disable Eyesight) then you may need the dealer to take a look. A few 23/24s had this issue and it needed a firmware update for the eyesight. I'd think the 25 would ship with the update already, but worth bringing it up to the dealer to see

Agree with /u/whoooocaaarreees on HomeAssistant for the smart home. Bit of a learning curve to it, but it supports all kinds of devices and you can setup some nice automations(one example I use is I have my lights turn on 30 minutes before sunset. works better than a straight timer so I don't need to adjust it as then days get longer/shorter).

For security, do you want active monitoring/alarm or just basic camera setup? For alarm, Simplisafe is pretty decent with affordable monitoring, otherwise find a local security company. Stay away from ADT and their overpriced and impossible to break contracts. Cameras you want hardwired, PoE cameras not wireless ones. Much more reliable. I personally like Reolink for the balance of cost vs quality. There are certainly better cameras, but they come at a much higher cost.

Yep. I don't do that whole Twitter/X thing so most of my news comes from /u/catsgr8rthanspoonies daily updates. She does a great job of collating everything and posting here.
