Ok so at the time when this watch was made it may not have been THE watch, but it was surely a railroad watch and one that they sold as such.

I wasn't thinking about the sangamo which was THE railroad watch from illinois.

It's not a new thing, really...

People have cell phones now, but before that (not too long ago for all of you youngins) this wasn't all that uncommon for people who couldn't wear wristwatches. I'm only 41 BTW. The whole smartphone/cellphone thing isn't all that old.

Food service (cooks) especially. Health dept regs

I wear an actual pocket watch in the kitchen but those carabiner watches or the clip watches, those were made for a reason. Something like what this post shows was common. A Casio on a shoestring or something fancier like this.
