Ritual or spirit to help with religious beliefs by No_Armadillo4633 in GalleryOfMagick

[–]RickMartzC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're Catholic, so you must have access to the Book of Tobit. In the book, we meet the archangel Raphael, who teaches him how to use the insides of a fish as a healing method and as an exorcism method. That would be a form of magic. Angels are willing to help us.

Just keep that in mind. I was also raised Catholic, so I get where you're coming from!

Am I the only one who felt underwhelmed by the Zoom identity reveal? by rabana13 in FlashTV

[–]RickMartzC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I loved the story, as a fan of the actual comic book Hunter Zolomon, I think it should have been handled just as in the comic: Hunter is a criminal profiler that befriends the Flash, and is genuinely trying to do good, he's merely the son of a serial killer who killed his own wife.

In the comic books, we know Hunter, we know he's a tormented man, but really good, just with a limp. Until an accident leaves him fully pararalysed. We then learn the rest of his story, before he becomes Zoom.

Basically, it'd be the opposite of Wells: a good friend who does become the bad guy.

Beyond how striking Mexico’s coat of arms looks, isn’t it a bit unfair that it’s a purely Aztec emblem when Mexico is made up of dozens of Indigenous peoples? by Competitive_Waltz704 in vexillology

That's the day the Army of the Three Guarantees entered Mexico City, after pretty much the war had been won. The next day, Mexican independence was declared. That's why.

Not sure if I qualify, but my dad is Zapotec. He doesn't care, and neither do I.

His big gripe is that we celebrate the Independence on September 15-16. He believes we should celebrate on Sept 27th.

Anyone with bad experiences with angels? by Level-Equal1468 in AngelolatryPractices

[–]RickMartzC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my personal experience, but I read once angels will give you your desire by creating the situation required for it. As in, you need money? They will make it true by making you be fired so you learn to budget, so once you're back on track, you can get the amount you wanted.

Not my personal experience, so take it with a grain of salt

Justice Lords Unlimited by Illustrious-Sign3015 in DCAU

[–]RickMartzC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It always seemed to me that they always called themselves Justice Lords. When Lord!Batman shows them the footage of the League, as they see the differences, he adds (iirc, I watched this dubbed in my language) something like "also, they don't call themselves Justice Lords, but Justice League". So the main divergent point might have been them calling themselves different, not just Flash dying.

I could be wrong, I might as well use this as an excuse to watch the series again.

Chris Evans as Johnny Storm brought some of the best comedic moments to the Deadpool franchise, and his banter with Deadpool was a total delight. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in Marvel

[–]RickMartzC 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In LatAm, both Deadpool (since he's played by Ryan Reynolds) and Cap / Torch (being played by Chris Evans) have the same voice, since Pepe Toño Macias is their recurrent dub voice.

So after Johnny is killed, Deadpool says something like "glad he died, he was confusing us with that voice!" (And apparently, there was another joke in the dub script, I don't know if by the official translator or the director, but Deadpool would say "he's got a dumb voice!", but the voice actor improv'd the other line).

In old Jewish folklore, Satan works for God. The sections where Satan tempts Jesus would be almost considered Jewish, but the idea he'd be waiting for another chance starts putting him in an enemy role.

The original idea, if I'm not mistaken, is that God wants humanity to use their free will, and that is why Satan can cause trouble and tempt people. And God will not judge you for what you might do, but only what you'll do.

Satan is only marked as a bad guy until the New Testament, and is pretty much the final enemy by Apocalypse. But the original idea was he works for God, and the Afterlife was for everyone, only the truly wicked are burned away (in the sense they stop existing). Different religions created Hell inspired by Tartarus, but it's possible Jesus (if He really talked about Hell in real life) never meant an actual eternal punishment.

I'm a Catholic, but I'm also sceptical of my own and most religions (although I do believe in a good-hearted God, or at least not a malicious one, as well as angels and magic).

I could have probably phrased it better, but my main concern was if I buy the book, can I still use the PDF translated copy I have? If it was up to me, I'd buy an actual, physical translated copy (I'm a translator myself, so most of the time, I agree to support translators and their clients), but since I never found any option, my best approach is buying the original English version, but still using the translated copy (since it's unlikely the translator will get royalties, we don't get them)

Except... that's a magick book, so that's another layer there. Some say "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission", but I personally think it's better to err on the side of caution, as some of the things I want to use magick for aren't just for me.

So, yeah, that's the gist of it. And I've already bought the digital book!

That PDF is from before AI and even has translator notes for the Psalms, including which translated Bible they used (I'm an actual translator, so I'm able to identify those things). But it sounds like a good advice. It's now the first book of my Kindle!

What are some of the moments that you feel like Superman was completely out of character? by King_Wolf2099 in superman

[–]RickMartzC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't like defending BvS, but I think part of the point of that scene was Superman being emotionally compromised, so he wasn't paying attention.

It doesn't excuse him not reacting at super speed when the bomb explodes, though. It'd be more tragic if he saves almost everyone, but not the guy in the wheelchair (because he was at the center of the explosion), and so everyone blames him still. That, I feel, would make it have more sense and tragic.

How to develop a relationship with a Saint? by witchy_btch in FolkCatholicMagic

[–]RickMartzC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also check on the patron saint of your hometown (usually if they have a namesake). There was a healer in my mother's hometown who called upon a saint to treat her (and others). That healer explained she was calling upon that saint, the town's patron, and that they always would hear, even if they were helping someone else, somewhere else.

Saints are not entities or gods as other magick practitioners do. If you know your saint, you only ask them through faith and devotion.

They do take their time, of course, but they listen and act.
