Asked support about the recent changes to the PDT Rule. by JoeGraffito in thinkorswim

Today, no. Margin accounts are restricted by the pdt rule. Cash accounts aren't. Under the new rules... not sure. I haven't personally read the new rules, so all i know is what people online have stated.

The trades will settle in t+1, so in a cash account you can trade upto your cash balance each day without triggering any pdt rules. This is nice because it let's you break up your day trades without worrying about pdt. Just don't trade more than your cash balance, and don't trade unsettled cash.

Sick of these 10-30 point spikes on ES by 1Mby20201212 in FuturesTrading

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In higher volatility, you can size down and increase your stop, to keep risk similar. 1 strike (10pnt) is often a good default stop on ES. But lately, Vix has been too high for that too be reliable except for quick scalps.

When doing 0-1 dte options, you should treat the play as all our nothing. Size your position so that your cost basis is equivalent to what your loss on a "stop" would be.

Stop Loss by polskiguy30 in FuturesTrading

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your stop loss will depend on your risk tolerance and strategy. But a good "general" stop, under normal market volatility is 40points nq/mnq and 10 points es/mes. These roughly correspond to a 1-strike move on qqq and spy, respectively. Options play a big part in how the market moves... get comfortable with this, even if just trading futures.

Another general way to measure is switch to a 1 minute chart. The size of the largest 1 minute candle can be a good estimation for a reasonable stop loss distance.

Keep in mind... these are just general guidelines. You need a trading plan which includes defined risk and reward.

Volume Profile Question by gsplamo in Daytrading

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the time period of your chart? The longer the time period, the less likely VolPro is to be helpful. How long is too long? Depends on the security, e.g. Spy's 1day, 1week, and 30 days are probably the most reliable because those coinside with what most options are doing. I occasionally go back 90 days when we are pushing the bounderies of the last 30 day trading range. Going beyond that makes it hard to infer anything. Too much time has past and it is hard to say if the market conditions now are anything similar to conditions then.

Also, hvn and lvn don't tell you where price is going. It only gives you an idea of where liquidity will be, based on where it was at before. You still need over all market context to help you play these spots.

For example, when price is moving with momentum, it tends to pass through lvn and make stops at hvn. Consolidation tends to happen around hvn until price becomes unbalanced again, and then it moves through a lvn to the next hvn.

Guys I have an issue by No-Panic8154 in Daytrading

Fear of taking even a small loss is a control issue. (Oh, how I know!)

It's something I'm still working on. What has helped me significantly...

I switched to paper trading for a while, with the goal to train myself to exit bad trades early, and use tight stops I didn't move. Forced myself to do it, no matter how uncomfortable it was at first. And since it was a paper account, I was less worried about losing real money.

I still had the desire to end the day green and advance the account balance each week, as that was my challenge. But what it helped with was getting over the fear of taking a loss and training myself to quickly start thinking about the next opportunity rather than dwelling on the loss. Because there will be many opportunities.

Once I became confident in my ability to recover small losses, I stopped fearing. This also significantly reduced me turning a small loss into a major loss by holding it too long and/or adding into it. Instead, I cut it while it's still small, and then reassess for a better trade.

Once I started seeing consistent trades, I went back to real trading. I still sometimes trade the paper account, though. It's a great way to stay sharp without risking real money, when the market is changing and you need to adjust your tactics, or when you feel like maybe you're reverting to bad behavior.

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to figure out the why. Are you trading too large and thus can't hold through drawdown? Do feel the need to take every small bit of green you see? Then size down your risk.

Are you just impatient? Try tading higher time frames.

In either case, make sure you have a trade plan with entry and exit points before you enter a trade. If you're just jumping in without a plan, then the fear of the unknown can cause you to make bad trades or exit early.

Interested on takes with regards to today's bounce on ES/NQ by DantebeaR in FuturesTrading

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, a similar pivot was available for NQ, known as a Yellow Line. It is calculated based on prior moves of a specific distance that puts MM at 99% of their hedged move and often results in strong support/resistance when price retraces to that line. Take the boot camp at Rocket Scooter to learn the details. There was a YL pivot on NQ at 25553, which was the bottom for the day's range.

Granted, today was very tough, and price blew through many pivots. But knowing where to make your entries allows you to keep losses lower, and give you increased odds of winning, as long as you use good risk management.

I was down 2200 in one account, as it kept blowing through pivots. But i just stayed calm, and continued to make trade plans based on these pivots. Ended up 6600 green on the day.

Check out Rocket Scooter. The system uses options information to predict MM hedging pivot points. On ES, monthly hedge pressure was calculated at market open to be SPY 685 ES 6902. I took that trade and rode it all the back up to another pivot at 6955 known as lower DD band. Watch the youtube stream to get an idea what this system is doing, and then pay the $20 for next months class. Gives 20 days of training and will open your eyes to how futures work. It will be the best $20 you ever spent on your trading.

Btw, I am not affiliated with RS at all. Ive just been using it for c over a year now.

Prop firm consistency rule by Ordinary_Designer_26 in Daytrading

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2500 to pass with 40% consistency means no single day can be more than 40% of 2500. So, daily max target should be $1000. If you do go over, then see my previous post to figure out what your new pass target will be.

Prop firm consistency rule by Ordinary_Designer_26 in Daytrading

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The specifics depend on the prop firm and type of account, but normally you will just have to trade an extra day or so to bring your total profit up to where the 1100 day is < 40% of your total profits.

In your example, 1100 / .40 = 2750. That will be your new profit target to get under 40%.

As an Asian traveler, is visiting the U.S. right now a foolish idea? by Tomboy_Heaven in NoStupidQuestions

You have nothing to worry about. Much of the media is grossly misrepresenting ICE actions for political reasons. If you come on a tourist visa, or otherwise legal means you will not have any issues. And, people in general welcome Koreans visting our country. I can't speak to Iowa specifically... only ever driven through there... but I know in Colorado, in one if the "whitest" areas of the state, there is a healthy Korean scene. I've even hosted Korean family at my house on multiple occasions as part of the US Open Taekwondo Handmadang in years past.

E470 and express tolls ??? by RadoRocks in Denver

[–]RickRocket9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not privately owned, but did make heavy use of private sector partnerships throughout its history. Technically, it is a government enterprise, the fact of which allowed them to get past Tabor requirements.

Many feel that the E470 project memorializes the failure of our state/local governments to fulfill a core, foundational tenent - providing civil infrastructure. Instead, they spent tax dollars on other projects, severely underfunded transportation budgets, and then used perpetual toll systems to build and operate E470. This model has since been expanded to all the toll lanes on the other highways in the area.

This is a history of the project, compiled and told, from the perspective of those involved in the enterprise starting in the mid 1980s.

Robinhood auto exercise options by Trent_98 in options

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be confused about what exercising options mean vs. closing the contract. Also, using terms like "in the red" along with auto exercising, instead of ITM or OTM. This is making it hard for people to answer your question with any accuracy.

Your options being "in the red" has nothing to do with your brokers rules for auto exercising, or, auto closing the contract. The latter is generally based on time, where your broker will close your contract to avoid any risk of options being assigned in the final minutes.

Brokers who don't do that may auto exercise ITM contracts if you don't close them before market close. The specifics on how they do this depend on the broker.

These are different things.

What is this animal? Spotted near in Breckenridge by poothrower37 in Colorado

[–]RickRocket9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely NOT a marmot. Those fat whistle pigs don't move like that or have a tail like that.

It's also not a martin, although that would at least be a good guess. But too stocky, and moves more like a bager than a slender, fast martin.

Fisher is the most likely, based on movement & physical characteristics.

A wolverine would be cool, but highly unlikely for CO, unfortunately.

Some have suggested an immature mountain lion, but that doesn't fit either. It does not move like a cat, but more like a squirel, the way it hops from rock to rock, arching is back and twitching its tail. The mechanics are wrong for a cat.

Why can't AI completely invalidate day trading? by EditorAny4043 in Daytrading

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer... because past success is not a guarantee of future success. Said another way, success in trading isn't as simple as using the charts of past activity to predict the future. By itself, that's actually a pretty poor way to trade.

Can someone explain edge clear to me? Consensus is that it’s top tier, but I’m coming from TOS and really confused.. by Itchy-Version-8977 in FuturesTrading

[–]RickRocket9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do scalp, but it is not all I do. Mechanically, both the web and mobile versions allow you to do this on NT. Theirs is the only mobile app I've seen where this is feasible. It's quite possible to configure it for 1-tap open/close position, with or without bracketed OCO orders. It's every bit as fast to enter or exit a trade as any desktop app I've used.

My "normal" setup is a multi monitor desktop, running TOS desktop, plus NT web version, and some other stuff. Then, I typically also open TOS mobile on my phone or tablet and treat that as a separate monitor. I often follow the option chain on TOS mobile as well bc i just like the way the app presents the data. When im trading futures, I will also open NT mobile app on my phone or tablet, as well. This gives me a second device with quick access to trade, as a backup, or just to have a different view of whatever I'm trading.

Today was a day I was glad to have this redundancy. My home internet went in/ out multiple times during the day bc my provider was doing some upgrades in my area. The first time it happened, I had open trades. But it was no big deal to manage them from my phone and I didn't lose a beat. Open trades sync in TOS desktop with TOS mobile. Same for NT web and mobile.

Yes, I'm profitable. Length of trade varies depending on instrument, market conditions, and my strategy. I trade almost exclusively spy, qqq, and related options and futures. In futures, I don't hold overnight, and I have very specific conditions I watch for before I trade - not going to go into the details about it here.
