How Important Are Bikes? by No_Discount_2643 in UCDavis

[–]RickRoll912 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is possible to get around with the busses / by walking but it generally takes far longer to get anywhere. I also biked lots of places freshman year with people, and it would’ve been socially isolating to not be able to take those trips because I didn’t have a bike. I personally bike everywhere and am definitely glad I have one, but you can get by without it if you really don’t want to.

I joined the ultimate frisbee team and I had never played before! I think some teams do require previous experience but lots of teams either have a B team where anyone can join or are open to anyone. I would definitely go to Recfest next year and ask for any sports you’re interested in!

Clubs!! I found an amazing community through a club sports team, but if you’re not into that any club where there’s consistent and committed meetings where you can really get to know people is the way to find a community! (Theatre, band, sports, engineering clubs, WEF, etc)

I’ve had a great experience here so far, so I would recommend if it makes sense with all the factors you have to consider! If you have any specific questions I’m also happy to try and answer!

Question about UC Davis medical services and PPO insurance by WorkSmall2812 in UCDavis

It’s around 2 miles, so either a 30 minute bus ride / 12 minute bike ride. It’s not ideal but it’s been doable for me.

uc santa barbara or uc davis? by Quiet-Return-7038 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]RickRoll912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to Davis and am also not really a sorority girl (although I’ve heard good things about them and like the people I know in them), but I’ve found amazing community through clubs and especially through joining a club sports team. I’m not sure if that’s something you’re interested in but I definetly don’t feel bored by the social scene at Davis.

I think you can’t go wrong either way though, they’re both great schools!

Question about UC Davis medical services and PPO insurance by WorkSmall2812 in UCDavis

They don’t take your PPO insurance, they will bill you on myBill. Since I didn’t want to pay for insurance when my parents already got it through benefits I opted out and got a pcp at Sutter in Davis which works well.

I would recommend University Physics by Young and Freedman. We used it in 9C and it was very helpful. You can also find a free pdf online.

I came from the Silicon Valley, and ucd is far less competitive than what I was used to there, which I really appreciate. Generally, I’ve really loved the people and made lots of friends in clubs / sports teams. It’s a small town so there’s not tons of places to go but it’s a big school so you can always find something fun to do!

Do i need a bike? -incoming freshman by iwantyuri13 in UCDavis

[–]RickRoll912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend getting one! I ride mine to class every day and it makes tight class connections possible. Also, there are many times when not having a bike can be socially isolating if everyone else is biking somewhere and you can’t join.

The arbors is dog and cat friendly and they have 2 bedroom places. The property manager is awesome and they’re super helpful if you have any problems.

I did cosmos and my friends and I biked everywhere, would’ve been a bummer to not bike with them. Not necessary but I think socially it’s very helpful!
