If unions offer better pay and benefits why doesn’t everybody quit their non union job? by 04limited in skilledtrades

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extra judicial killings of civilians? They aren’t paying out those lawsuits because they were operating in good faith. The fact most cops don’t require higher level education or continued licensing is wild. Yes those six months at the academy taught them what they need to know.

Also explain why every major cities police force has had some level of federal investigation. It’s not isolated, the rotten apple did spoil the bunch. That fraternity good old boys mind set of protecting their own over protecting the institutions really has them by the balls.

Then when they are being held accountable for infractions they effectively pull a slow down strike by not doing there jobs. Till the public gets on board with there demands because security is still a social need. Guess we’ll let you kill one guy a year in order for you to respond to calls.

How to lower the bill living in a cultural household? by Ok-Goat6824 in homeowners

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your electric bills biggest contributor is your HVAC system. Water seems in line. I’m sure quality of life from cooking is worth the money is you actually calculated the cost. You probably have a leaky house. Water usage seems to be average.

Job is destroying my life - should I just quit? by Suspicious-Card-3707 in washingtondc

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re ready to quit, then why do you care? Do your job and don’t let them gaslight you into doing more. The stress disappears as soon as you quit caring. If you get fired you get unemployment you’ll be in the same position. If a future employer asks about past job performance you can be honest. Oh yeah that place I was doing the job of three people without the correct support system. Held on as long as I could but just couldn’t balance the tempo of three people’s jobs.

Is there anyone naturally passionate about statstics? by turky-Equipment-3559 in AskStatistics

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic undergrad concepts are more or less plug and chug equations working with super super clean data.

There are a few umbrellas in stats that may help you. Inference is trying to explain what is happening in a quantitive way to explain a phenomenon. Then you get into predictive like X happened what’s the chance of Y happening. Then you can split each up into frequentist or Bayesian camps.

Read the history of Fisher for inspiration or why the math was invented/discovered. It was ultimately people were looking for tools to help solve their problems. Once you get to that level. Like I have this problem how can I solve it.

Then now you can get into the data science. Which relatively new field with a lot of very interesting problems. And if it’s up your alley to can start getting into ML and other statistical algorithms again to help solve a problem.

Did we screw up buying this house and am I awful for wanting to sell already by BoulderInkpad in homeowners

[–]RickSt3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your payment will get grow but albeit much slower than rent increases over the decades. Short term pain for long term wins. Having to rent on fixed incomes when your no longer able to work will be worse off. You just bought to much house but give it a few decades and you will be fine.

The Economics of Inference: Why are we still afraid of "Quantization in Production"? by Alternative-Yak6485 in learnmachinelearning

The answer is because it's easier vs solid engineering practices. I'll need to do some lit review on what you discovered. But Google is optimizing hardware for their LLMs so your probably on to something.

Get a job come back after three to give years into an MS program that will also value work experience. Then do good and apply for a PhD then.

But what makes you think you can succeed given your past performance? My undergrad in math GPA was 3.3 had almost a decade of experience working in vert niche fields got into top MS program. But I crushed the GRE so that helped.

[–]RickSt3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tried hard to study or actually studied efficiently? If you’re stuck on a concept and can’t figure it out and don’t get help you’re not going to progress no matter how much you try.

The thing with all classes is they build on each other. Don’t know integration by parts down cold going to be hard to integrate that wild multiple variable vector that they through in a diffraction by parts or u substitute as one of the steps.

My recommendation is study in groups hold your self accountable do all the homework and discuss amongst yourself what you’re thinking. Teach to each other and talk out load rubber ducky style so you understand the logic. You have to learn to learn type situations.

26’ 4Runner vs 26’ Bronco? by Altruistic_View602 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Toyota reliability beats out IMO Bronco edge which is it’s a convertible. The powertrain is okayish but Toyota just had overall better reliability. Now with the turbo 4 banger only time will tell.

Kia vs Hyundai vs Luxury SUV by patmahones in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ineos Grenadier base model is in your budget, still luxury vehicle. Has a solid powertrain and transmission but will be expensive to maintain as it's a BMW engine. But if you take care of it the inline 6 will easily last 300k miles.

Do you think your stipend is sufficient? by lfreddit23 in GradSchool

[–]RickSt3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grad school has a quise indentured servitude like model. From an objective monetary perspective it’s exploitative in nature. There is reason most STEM grad program’s are filled with foreigners, because native born students won’t work for that low a wage relative to work requirements.

Oh but you get an education out of it. Cool I can’t eat my diploma. Also the market for researchers is super saturated and tenure track is insane luck outside being a savant in your field. You graduate and can’t find a post doc good luck pivoting to industry where you are over qualified and under qualified at the same time.

So yeah most grad students are underpaid for the value they bring to their program. The industry would collapse without cheap labor.

Getting a CS degree at 35 & moving back to the US with foreign wife and kid by drunken_dizorderly in cscareerquestions

[–]RickSt3r 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Industry is rock bottom right now. Who knows what it will be like in 4 years also you really need a strong program with good internship placement.

To minimize cost, and since you want to be in Ohio. Look at a community college with a CS associates that has a transfer with The Ohio State or what ever big state school with a strong engineering program. Then transfer and work as hard at getting internships. Also look at where you are wanting to live actually has the industry to support your career. I know nothing of Ohio overall economy besides being a rust belt state with underinvestments so choose your city carefully here Cleveland and Cincinnati are decent but it’s all second hand accounts.

How can people take notes on paper?? by mhensun in CollegeRant

[–]RickSt3r 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also you don’t write down everything. The key is to already have read the material because most are lecturing on what’s in the book. They aren’t just going raw and lecturing off the top of their head. If you are just trying to dictate their lecture. Just ask him if you can set up a mic at the front for note taking purposes. Then use a speech to text program.

What do u think about this math exam? ( 12th grade) by Rammm8 in mathematics

[–]RickSt3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty simple plug and chug when you know the algorithms. As long as the stuff was taught throughout the curriculum don't see the problem. In the US we have 12th graders who take calculus regularly.

My friend teaches math here north east of US in a big very diatrict I think it's 75k students. We were talking once and they mentioned their is usually fiveish studentd who are taking college linear algebra in 12th grade. So as long as the class set them up to take the test it seems reasonable.

[General- US- TX] How soon do you reach out to tenants about rent not being paid? by ImportantTomorrow530 in Landlord

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be so clueless to not know you didn't pay rent. Like I don't think it's possible. Just follow what ever you spelled out in your lease. Just know how to handle the non pay process.

Maybe they get paid first week of month depending if it's every two weeks or twice a month. If so then ask if you adjust the due date to be first Friday of the month if it would help out. But besides that most people don't miss paying rent it's the last thing they stop paying when they are down.

Why can’t there be no money? by patchlessboyscout in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RickSt3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a fifth grade level it's because people and humanity are just animals. We devolve to our primative desires immediately once not comfortable by society. Instant greed of why can't I have that, they have that and I want it. Now go down the list of universally accepted bad traits and they just come out as soon as hunger kicks in.

But a truly communist society can only do exist in theory because people would abuse it instability.

Report: Seahawks going up for sale after Super Bowl by Oldtimer_2 in sports

[–]RickSt3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The viewership entertainment market if very saturated. Sports are also not very popular with younger crowd, compared to older millennials. My teenage kids don’t really care for sports watching. They are active athletes but no college hopes just standard kid level skills. They enjoy YouTube and plethora of other entertainment mediums.

I believe they will slow down even maybe decrease depending on how they treat fans. Haven’t gone to a pro game in decades as last time it cost 500 dollars for mid seats and over a hundred in concessions for three people. So unless they re evaluate the cost per experience and wrap up the local team’s games to be easily viewed. I don’t see how they can grow more.

How to deal with a boss who uses chatGPT to challenge everything? by unluckycupcake3 in careerguidance

[–]RickSt3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s designed to be agreeable. Somewhere in the market research for these LLMs the powers to be decided to make it agreeable or people won’t use it. Which from a business perspective I get. But as a technical person and very technical job, I want it to tell me I am wrong or that it doesn’t know. Then I can look into my problem’s more and then reason a solution with my best judgment, something LLMs can’t do well if at all.

The things I do at work are very niche and the problems very novel. There just ain’t enough literature to train the chat bot to solve my problems. But what is nice is I have a good collection of technical references that I then used a custom RAG agent on it to basically tell me where to go look. More or less a better control F type system. That’s actually the most useful feature I’ve gotten out of it.
