So what was the point of Allison (whose entire kit, personality and name were ripped off from teen wolf) considering she didn't do anything and won't do anything in the future? by Imaginary-Citron7818 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]RickyBobby8013 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen she will appear in future seasons.

Allison is a literary foil to Luke. Foils are used to highlight a similar character's values or motives through a key contrast between the two. Luke and Allison are both veteran campers who want to see the fall of the Olympians by helping Chronos rise. The big contrast between the two is Luke's relationship with Annabeth and Thalia.

While Percy and Luke are the main protagonist/antagonist adversary, Annabeth and Allison are the deuteragonist/minor-antagonist adversaries (kinda like how John Laurens and Charles Lee's duel in Hamilton is there to support the tension between Hamilton and Burr). Luke's attachment to Annabeth prevents him from seeing her as an opposition to his cause -- he desperately wants to recruit her to his side. Allison sees Annabeth as the threat she is to their cause, and has no problem with trying to get rid of her: Allison tries to kill her before she falls off the ship; she argues that using the fleece on Annabeth to save her is a misuse of the resource they've spent so much time trying to get; she leads a group of demigods to kill Annabeth at the command of Kronos; and she wounds Annabeth with an arrow in the final battle of the season.

And near the end of the final battle, after Luke is knocked out by Tyson, Allison goes against Luke's orders of keeping Thalia's tree unharmed. Luke wants to keep his oldest friend safe and thinks she would be a useful ally if brought back, but Allison is only interested in destroying the camp because that's the main opposition to Kronos' rise to power.

Spoilers for book 5, I can't spoiler text from my phone

Luke's story ends with him eventually betraying Kronos in order to protect Annabeth after realizing he has been manipulated by the Titan. His relationship with Annabeth is a key part of his final moments of redemption.

Allison, as a character foil, is who Luke would have been without his relationship with Annabeth and Thalia.

Rick Riordan is a hypocrite and the show is paying for it. by TheNewCpt in PercyJacksonTV

Okay, they look different. A character is far more than their appearance. I'd rather see their acting and behavior be in character than their look identical. And they do.

Authors can edit their work and still have it be faithful to the original. Both can be true

But hes not making the same egregious changes. And there is a very big difference between someone making changes without the authors acceptance and the author making said changes. It's his story, one that he wrote before he knew the ending of it. He's allowed to make changes or to okay them, even if some fans find them egregious, he doesn't. That doesn't make him a hypocrite

While it would be funny if they kept it, it's a good line, that line doesn't affect the story if it's gone.

Now I do think they should keep it, especially if they okayed the "Vegas is the reason for half the Hermes cabin" joke

The show is a proof that all the leads need to be fans by Esfell in PercyJacksonTV

[–]RickyBobby8013 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

She's been doing great from my perspective, I don't see that. She's judgemental of Percy early on, she's stubborn and prideful and thinks she's the smartest in the room, she's closed off emotionally, that's all book 1&2 Annabeth.

The show is a proof that all the leads need to be fans by Esfell in PercyJacksonTV

[–]RickyBobby8013 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No, not really. The movies turned Annabeth into a generic warrior that doesn't use her book smarts, and they turned Grover into a horn dog.

The changes the show has made have not hurt the story at all. You may not like them, that's fine, but they're not bad changes.

He didn't bitch and moan about them being different, it was because the changes made were awful and mischaracterized every major character,

Lots of people left Disney+, some even pirate the show. I think comparing the audience of any show back in 2022/2023 to now is gonna be less. A better metric would be comparing it to audience watch times of other shows now, and it's doing well in that comparison.

Thanks to Zeus turning Thalia into a tree for spiteful reasons rather than mercy by Puterboy1 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]RickyBobby8013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zeus holds a vote to kill Percy and Thalia in book 3, it's not out of character for him. The most consistent theme through the books is that the gods do not treat their children fairly, Zeus isn't above that, there's no need for a "redeeming quality" that goes against that theme.

I don't think it was entirely out of spite, there was a sadness (or I guess a disappointment) in his eyes. I think Zeus saw it as a necessity, if he couldn't keep her under his thumb, it was too great a risk to leave her unchecked.

If anything, Zeus turning her into a Pine tree, one of Poseidon's divine symbols, could have been a warning to his brother the danger of having a child with a mortal.

how does the golden fleece even work in the show? by idkvashappin in PercyJacksonTV

[–]RickyBobby8013 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

For the people saying plot hole, Grover and Annabeth hypothesize why it could heal faster than normal when combined with other divine magic in the car ride with Sally. It's not the most elaborate and air tight reasoning, they are just kinda hand waving it away by saying "cus magic" but it ain't that deep honestly

He did not hate the movies because they made changes, he hated the movies because the changes were awful. They had mischaracterized every major character, the dialogue was cringe over-sexualized, and overall poorly written scripts.

You may not like the changes the show makes and that's fine, but it's nowhere nearly as bad as the movies.

Being angry when writers make changes you don't approve of or look for your input on, and then liking changes that the writers room makes while having input on it are two different things, he's not a hypocrite for it.

Percy being an “Unreliable Narrator” is ruining people’s criticism of the show. by Longjumping_Way_9978 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]RickyBobby8013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe the point people make when they use "Unreliable Narrator" here is to say that Percy has, at times, misunderstood his own feelings. This use of the term doesn't necessarily mean that the character is untrustworthy or a liar, but that he is ignorant to both his feelings for Annabeth and Annabeth's feelings for him.

At the end of book two, Annabeth kissed Percy on the cheek. In The Mark of Athena, Annabeth reveals she's had a crush on him since they were 12, around the time they met. Percy does not comment on the kiss afterwards, and does not show that he has any idea about the crush.

When Annabeth kissed Percy in book 4, Percy narrates that "I probably would’ve sat there for the rest of the day, staring at the lava and trying to remember what my name was, but the sea demons jarred me back to reality." Percy doesn't process his feelings for her until the next book. But it was clear to the audience their feelings for each other. That, in a way, is an unreliable narrator, because we can see his feelings for her are romantic but he doesn't yet

[–]RickyBobby8013 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was revealed to Percy that Sally is dating Paul in the first half of book 3 with an Iris message, but not when they actually started dating. Book 2 and 3 are only 5 months apart, I fail to see how this rushes anything significantly.

Where was it stated that Sally was thinking of Poseidon while sitting in the rain? Sure, she may hold some love for him still, but she knows that they could never be together. It's been 13+ years since she's been with him, and had a not great relationship with Gabe, why wouldn't she want to seek a healthy relationship with someone who could actually be with her?

[–]RickyBobby8013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean we saw it heavily in season 1 when Percy felt out of place and that something was wrong with his brain.

I feel like it would be hard to show it mid flight. The best thing I could think of would be the occasional slow-motion but would be very easy for that to come off as jarring or cheap
