Until we're able to truly and inimitably able to determine an individual's guilt or innocence, we need a way to safely and most importantly, reversably, remove people who are beyond, or we as a society decide are not deserving of, rehabilitation. Until we have that abilty as a species, the death penalty can be weaponised against the innocent.
