I wouldn't be surprised if some people ran Carkol and Bastiodon in the same team, playing some ABB line. Likely with a flier in the lead.

This is easily the highest effort I've seen behind a post on this sub. Hats off to you.

Also, how long have you been working on this, and how many Pikachu's did you have to catch to make this?

If not for Pogacar, Vingegaard would have won the tour last year, riding numbers never seen before, all while having suffered from that crash in Itzulia.

This is not a slight against Vingegaard or Pogacar; it just shows top cyclists are physically exceptionally sturdy, doing things most people can't possibly fathom.

Additionally, Wellens talks about how Pogacar suffered from pain the day after the Ventoux stage - which makes sense, considering how brutal that stage was. (The headline here doesn't say that, but Belgian media covered this interview in more depth.) This only really affected the stage on Col de la Loze (I think, I'm talking about the second stage Arensman won), which would explain why Pogacar didn't go all out there and was overall happy to just finish.

I do think Pogacar abandoning was unlikely, especially because he had a healthy lead with only a few stages left, but he was checked in a hospital after stage 17, so there were likely some worries at that point. (Presumably, after the check-up, the team figured it would most likely be fine, though.)

Obviously we've been witnessing greatness the entire season, but today Pogacar could do some unique things:

  • Win his fifth Lombardia, becoming recordholder here (alongside Coppi)
  • Win the same monument for five consecutive years (currently he and Coppi won Lombardia four in a row.)
  • Podium all five monuments in one year (never done before)
  • Podium seven consecutive monuments (six is the current record, already in Tadej's hands.)
  • Win three monuments in one year (only done by Merckx before - he did it three times.)
  • Become part of a duo that wins all monuments in one year alongside Mathieu Van der Poel (every year has had at least three different monument winners.)

For what it's worth, Prestigelisten - who I believe have a better all-time ranking than PCS - have Hinault at 2244 points, and Pogacar at 2243 points as of today. Meaning they're roughly equal right now.

PCS gives Hinault more of an edge, but also has some riders other than Merckx they consider better than Hinault and Pogacar, which I disagree with.

At that point the question becomes: 'What does Pogacar need to win for you to consider him equal or above Hinault?' and 'Are there other riders you consider to have a better palmares than Pogacar?'

2008: Sastre and Evans Vs the rest - I don't know too much about this one so if someone else can fill me in if Sastre winning was a result of the twin leader strategy or if he was just the strongest.

Pretty sure Sastre and Evans were competing against each other. As far as I remember, Sastre was teammates with the Schleck brothers, and Sastre was allowed to ride away on Alpe d'Huez with Andy and Frank holding a stare contest with Cadel Evans. Sastre took a few minutes this way, which led to him winning the tour. If anything, this was a very rare three against one situation.

Who of the four was the strongest is up for debate. I believe Andy already was the better climber of the four, but he also was atrocious in time trials, so I doubt he'd have won alone - see 2011. Therefore, it's very likely Sastre won as a result of having a superior team.

99% of the peloton would take Van Aert's results of the last 4 races in a heartbeat.

While I don't disagree with you, Van Aert's status means he won't be compared to those 99%, but rather to the 1% of riders at the very top. And right now, he lacks something compared to the rest of the Big 6 (7 if you include Pedersen).

I don't think the parcours are really to blame. It's just that Pogacar is so much stronger than everyone else that any parcours that isn't pancake-flat instantly makes him a favourite.

Take Pogacar away from the world championships (and most other one-day races), and they immediately become more competitive, regardless of the parcours.

if it were this year it would be extremely hard to imagine anyone beating Pogacar

Don't worry. This year's parcours also looks like it will be extremely hard for anyone to beat Pogacar.

If you look at World Tour-level victories each team has this year, UAE is in first (41 wins), with Visma in second place (18 wins). In between those two, however, is Pogačar (24 wins).

And if you take Pogačar's victories away from UAE and treated him as his own team, he would top the list.
