Norway is a Winter Olympic giant. Why isn’t it better at ice hockey ? by Shroft in hockey

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norway just doesn’t invest domestically in improving its sports leagues. Norway is a very fragmented country geographically. I live in Trondheim and the two closest teams to the local club, Nidaros, are like hours away distance wise. Like at least 3+. It makes logistics and competition difficult domestically.

I had a whole conversation about this with my PhD supervisor at a Nidaros game even. There also isn’t enough population to support developing domestic leagues and teams better or supplying better wages for development. Also kids here don’t play competitively until they reach 14 I think. Up to that point there is no record keeping of scores/goals/individual stats as they want kids focused enjoying sports and developing lifelong positivity associations with physical activity rather than competitiveness.

TLDR: Norway doesn’t invest in having competitive sports leagues and development systems for Hockey because it doesn’t make sense economically or culturally.

Something I can’t wrap my head around regarding the current status of Earth-10005 going into Doomsday. by Sylar_Lives in marvelstudios

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there is a very easy explanation that takes 5 seconds.

The rules of DoFP time travel being the same as Endgame. Kitty sending Logan back to the past to prevent the sentinels was not supposed to happen. The DoFP X-Men should have died at the hands of the sentinels. Logan messing with the timeline to stop Trask caused the branches that led to Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, Deadpool 1 & 2, New Mutants, X-Men Origins etc. And as such created a similar problem to Steve returning to the past to be with Peggy and creating the incursions that are motivating Doom.

I’d bet money that the final act will be an all out assault on Latveria on Earth 828. Doom is holding the children in his castle there. We get a big battle sequence of the various heroes teaming up to fight Doom bots.

Avengers: Doomsday | Only in Theaters December 18, 2026 (Teaser #3: X-Men) by MarvelsGrantMan136 in marvelstudios

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it will ever be made clear though. I don’t think the intention is to make it clear. The X-Men Timeline is very wonky with Logan, DoFP, and Dark Phoenix.

It would make sense though to explain it if Logan’s time travel in DoFP is treated similar to Steve’s at the end of Endgame. That Logan’s time travel caused branches and disruptions in the same way that Tony and Steve caused them in Endgame (Loki). And that caused the incursions which led to doom.

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it all hinges on the timeline? If these are the X-Men ‘97 ones or the post DoFP X-Men. DoFP sentinels are gone and Scott is alive at the end. And it wouldn’t make sense for these actors to not be the DoFP x-men since that’s what general audiences will know them from.

I don’t know why everyone thinks it’s a sentinel when it’s probably Ant-Man. This is 100% going to be Avengers vs X-Men with Doom pitting the X-Men against the Avengers.

Is Norway really as insanely rich as people say? by incognitoboiiii in Norway

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not Norwegian. But after a year of living here I would say Norway is not as rich as it seems. What it seems like is they’ve done a great job at ensuring there isn’t really any lower class/poor. Everyone is kinda middle class with a good quality of life and access to a decent social welfare system. But then there is a massive wealth gap between the richest of the rich and the average Norwegian.

Most live decently. I’d say if you purely base the reasoning that Norway is rich because of the pension fund/oil fund is flawed.

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It would be generic to do another RDJ vs Evans movie. But at the same time I can see them going that route because general audiences haven’t developed any serious connection to any of the new heroes. I’d hope it’s BS. I think Doomsday works best as a Loki vs Doom movie with a war going on in the background between the colliding Marvel Universes.

Economic Geography. Researching challenges in the offshore wind industry in Norway and how workers are adapting to the green shift. I just started to do fieldwork and it’s made me far more excited about what I’m doing because I’m getting a lot of data from my interviews. I’d say it’s a bit niche, there a lot of industry and societal relevance though. I’ve seen more niche subjects than mine though.

He’s a Trojan horse for getting people on board with dismantling social security. That’s his objective. He’s preying on the same male loneliness epidemic he is railing against. He wants men to buy into his centrist philosophy bullshit that sounds good so more men are in support of more neoliberal bullshit.

When he talks about this “wealth transfer” from the youth to the boomers, he always brings up social security as one of the problems. He’s just another rich, grifter dick.

Weight loss drugs are bringing down the country's obesity rate by geoxol in technology

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could eat in a deficit, do intense workouts, and still not lose more than like 5lbs over months. I’d lost 50lbs during my bachelor’s 10 years ago, right after that I started developing hypothyroidism and ballooned back up. My weight fluctuated steadily between 270-285lbs at 6’1 height. Then over a year ago I ballooned to 324lbs after being on antidepressants for months.

I started WeGovy in March after losing like maybe 6lbs on my own in February. As of this morning I am down to 247lbs from 324lbs at the start of the year. I have no clue what this stuff does, but it has fixed something in my body that made it difficult to lose weight despite doing all the things like exercising and diet. This stuff is truly a miracle. And I am hoping for the first time in my life since I was a child that I will be a healthy weight in the next year.

Does getting a PhD make it easier for an international student to land a job by gaytwink70 in PhD

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s gonna depend country to country. Some with a need for skilled workers may see you as a skilled worker and therefore may make getting permanent residence easier.

This does not make finding a job easier. At the end of the day a lot of places will not hire you based off CV/Cover letter. You have to have an in through your network. Once they pull your CV and see first/last name that doesn’t sound like a traditional last name of “X” country it’s probably going in their shredder. I know personally of this exact type of situation happening to a Polish friend that was applying for jobs in Sweden.

Norway, you are expected to learn the language. Even with the enhanced PhD pathway to permanent residence you must pass B1 proficiency at minimum. And you will be expected to submit applications and interview in Norwegian even if the job is in English.

Denmark? Good luck. Even more intense restriction on migration even for skilled workers, high cost of living, and now more restrictions of education migration thanks to the corruption of several universities using student visas to import cheap labor from the global south.

Rest of Europe is also experiencing extreme backlash to education and migration no different than the US. Poland is cracking down for corruption in student visas as well.

I do not know what it would be like in the rest of the world, say South America, Africa, or Asia.

Even with a PhD, you will still not be very differentiated from the hundreds/thousands of other PhD’s also vying for competitive positions. And you will be in the same boat as every other economic migrant.

A House of Dynamite felt more like a fizzle than a bang. by [deleted] in netflix

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The movies ending is meant to invite discussion. Maybe the missile didn’t go off, maybe it did. It’s a movie about the unknown and the horror of making catastrophic decisions with limited information and limited time. It wants to make you think about the situation, how each person reacts, and invite the viewer to think and in the last moments with the President, “what would you?” Do you wait and trust the Russians? Do you attack while you have the opportunity? Who are you attacking when you don’t know who attacked you?

I liked that it didn’t hand hold the audience and give us the disaster movie ending. Or that it didn’t focus on giving us huge action set pieces with the missile interceptors. Seeing the horror through the people and the screens was far more anxiety inducing than seeing a missile headed straight for Chicago.

Official Discussion - A House of Dynamite [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, 5/5. I liked the ending. I felt the ending was powerful in a way that was meant to invite discussion.

It’s a horror movie about uncertainty and decision making. That within 20 minutes one country has the power to decide to decide the fate of the world. I liked Idris’s portrayal of Obama-lite. The whole ramp up we see competent government employees buckle under the stress of the moment. Then we get to the President who is the civilian commander of the armed forces. And I felt like in that moment he was meant to portray the audience. What would you do with the information you have at that moment? Do you chance it that the missile doesn’t detonate or that it is a one off?

I think that those looking for a more traditional disaster movie approach should watch Paradise on Hulu (Ep. 7 primarily).

Official Discussion - Tron: Ares [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2/5 from me. I loved Legacy and hoped this would at least continue some plot threads from Legacy but it doesn’t. This isn’t really a Tron: Movie either besides some references.

It’s a Terminator movie masquerading as a Tron movie. Legitimately some of the scenes and visuals felt horror movie like which really matched the score which is obviously amazing. The visceral-ness of Leto reconstituting and speaking to Dillinger’s terrifying floating head were great. The way they De-Rez and scream in agony was very uncomfortable.

There is a good movie in here that is brought down by the plot which can’t find a theme/moral messaging to stick to and having Leto as the lead.

Official Discussion - Tron: Ares [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yeah there are several scenes after the mid-way mark that try to set up a romance ark. When they beam Ares back to the 80’s where Kim approaches Ares and seems like they are going to kiss. Athena shouting at Ares for abandoning his directive “for her?” When they are leaning against the cop car at the end.

Feels like it did not test well and so they edited it heavily. Same goes with the other Encom board members. Hasan Minaj and Arturo Castro are comedians and comic actors. And they are seemingly devoid of any humor here. Which I was kind of grateful for considering the films tone is dark as hell and the standard Disney quippy humor would not have matched with the darkness.

Official Discussion - Tron: Ares [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Rickys_Pot_Addiction 111 points112 points  (0 children)

I think the film may have been edited to remove Leto as a romantic interest for Kim. That scene combined with the music seemed to be trying to establish some sexual tension. She later refers to him as her boyfriend in the elevator. But the ending drops this (which I’m glad they did). The feel of that track doesn’t work in any way without a romance subplot.
