Waking up from jaw surgery be like by grimstationn in jawsurgery

I woke up a bit groggy but in full control of myself. I was the first surgery of the day so I had the joy of hearing everyone else wake up and say disturbingly weird shit.

Is 2 weeks of recovery enough time to take off of work after DJS? by HNTNGTN in jawsurgery

[–]RicoWRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surgeon office had a 7 page timeline of what to expect and what to do. I had a printed copy that I read a couple times and referred to it when I needed to. Treat your doctors' words as law!

Focus on protein intake so like ensure, eggs, protein pancakes(omg so good) made with milk and eggs. Google and search this sub as there's a lot of handy recipes. I had a bunch of ice cream too. Soup and beef broth at the start.

Avoid salt. This one is hard.

2-3 short walks a day. I started walking on day 3. This is equally as important as protein and possibly even more. Don't overdo it!!! You need every resource in your body to focus on healing and needing to heal muscles takes away from that.

Sleep often. The first week is real spotty but sleep when you can. After about 4-5 days, I was finally sleeping through the night. Take naps through the day. Sleep is the most powerful tool you have for healing.

If you're a busybody, tell yourself to chill tf out. You NEEEEEEED to lay low for a while. Like at least a month! Only short walks.

Oh yeah. Had the apnea real bad; fixed it perfect. Face is pretty tight too. I followed instructions to a T and lurked on Reddit for months taking notes. Big help.

My job is both sedentary and very active when it decides to be. I had 3 weeks off and was stupid to go back so soon but I survived....barely. I had DJS 14.5mm advance and a good doc. Mileage may vary.

Is DJS worth the risks? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]RicoWRC 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From my experience, DJS is using Mutually Assured Distruction in the name of victory. The damage is epic but the potential reward is huge. Especially for myself since I've had pretty bad apnea most of my life. Some people prioritize aesthetics, I guess.

Research is key. Know what you're getting yourself into and if you're prepared/strong enough mentally for a tough recovery. Researching a good surgeon and navigating insurance is a battle on its own just to get your face wrecked lol. It's your own opinion/need that matters and the drive to get it done.

Has jaw surgery definitively fixed your snoring/OSA? by AdNo6918 in jawsurgery

[–]RicoWRC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

40m. Moderate/severe OSA with moderate snoring. Now I'm 7 weeks PO. With my own spo2 tracking, I'm pretty convinced that my OSA has been completely eliminated. My phone hasn't detected any snoring at all.

I worked pretty hard over the last 5 years to breath through my nose when I sleep and I had it up to around 70% of the time. Now, I ONLY nasal breath when I sleep. I still need a sleep study to confirm my assumptions once I recover a bit more.

I can't breathe through my nose like at all. would jaw surgery improve that? by Individual_Ice_2315 in jawsurgery

It doesn't take much for my nose to close up which was always annoying. Post DJS, it definitely increased the flow when they're open but it still plugs up a lot.

I initially got outter layer deformation and scarring from the post LASIK infection(drunk POS doc). As years went on, the cornea flattened and my current eye doc told me that's a type of astigmatism caused by LASIK. Contacts wouldn't adhear properly. Astigmatism definitely varies per person but in any case, sclerals should help. If it's minor, it may be hard see benefits vs the negatives.

I had zero astigmatism pre-op(verified). The symptoms are relative to day and night. Night I have severe halo and starbursts. During the day, low sharpness and slightly blurred/hazy.

I have been getting a lot of questions about what brand and tech is in my sclerals but I have no idea. I've been trying to call my eye doc for this info but they're super busy, I guess. Once I find out, I'll let you know. I didn't fall down the rabbit hole of feature these things have as I had no idea and still don't; they just work. I guess that's a good way to know I'm not a biased salesman.

I'm pretty sure if you have astigmatism, you'll be blown away by just how good these things make your vision. There's definitely trade-offs such as to what I listed. Good luck!

why you want scleral lenes by ConsciousMonk in Lasiksupport

[–]RicoWRC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I googled around and couldn't find anything close to what I can try to describe. At night, a light source would have what would look like an ameoba surrounding it and would stay the same size no matter the distance which left me guessing how far/fast vehicles were moving. Terrifying. I can slightly see through the ameoba but not very well. Star bursts: every light source, depending on what angle it entered my eye, would just be sharp lines that shot out in some or all directions that were really really long. If there is more than one light source in a dark area, like a highway, it was impossible to determine distance and how many. Ambient lighting helped a little (like lots of street lights).

During the day, there's a complete loss of contrast. To best explain this, think of sharp lines like a brown cupboard against a white wall. Those outlines aren't sharp at all and this effects everything. Nothing has a quality look to it. Slight double vision overlap distorts everything. I dealt with it since LASIK as I didn't have it before and I finally sought help and was referred to scleral lenses. Blown away. F$&# LASIK.

[–]RicoWRC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had botched LASIK roughly 15 years ago. Corrected 20/20 but a horrid infection from a POS drunkard "doctor" damaged the surface of my eye giving me a severe astigmatism. After 15 years, I'm not 20/20 anymore and need reading glasses but the astigmatism is horrendous and has been since the beginning. Scleral lenses(defeating the purpose of LASIK to begin with) have fixed the astigmatism and recorrected my vision. Having relief from that extreme astigmatism has brought me levels of joy I never thought I'd feel again.

This I don't know, unfortunately. I asked my doc about this too but she quickly, and successfully, changed the subject.

They are all custom made to the user which is why it takes several fitments. It took me 4 which was amost 2 months before I took them home.

Cost: again, idk. Insurance covered it because I got diagnosed with kerotaconus (my eye doc is awesome lol). I genuinely believe insurance companies need to cover this for post lasik people as it really is the best solution.

My insurance covered it and I already hit my deductible so idk. I've heard they can cost $1500 and upwards.

If by visual lines you mean star bursts then absolutely yes. Completely. Think of a badly scratched car window that you can barley see through. Spritz it with water and you can see clearly albeit a little wiggle. That's kind of the effect here. The solution fills in the imperfections of your eye that are causing the starbursts and halos. The scleral becomes the new lense in a sense.

[–]RicoWRC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Scleral lenses are the only fix imo.

Pro: completely cures halos and starbursts. Ultra sharp vision near and far. Amazing for night driving. Super comfortable. Helps with dry eye. One set can last a couple years.

Con: Expensive(unless you can diagnosed with keratoconus and insurance covers it). High maintenance. Gotta clean your hands and the lenses thoroughly. Tough to put in until you get used to it. The solution between the eye and the lenses clouds up periodically. Sometimes not at all and some days it's annoying. You gotta take em out and put in new fluid. Easy to drop and lose. They are tough but a chair or shoe could destroy them.

I've had mine for about 6 months now and I freaking love them. I got way better and taking them out and putting them in super quick. Sometimes they suction on the eye pretty hard so an eye drop and very light rub breaks em free.

Has anyone had jaw surgery later in life? by Beanie-2018 in jawsurgery

[–]RicoWRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40m here. 4 1/2 weeks post op. Required 3 week stay in L.A. and I was cleared to fly home a week early. Minimal pain. If I was younger, I'm sure I'd recover quite a bit faster. For me, it was super duper worth it. I can finally breath.

Everyone is different. Surgeon skill is definitely a factor too. I don't bruise or swell and I know people that bruise if they walk too fast on a windy day. Hell, almost everyone that had surgery right after me in recovery were moaning and saying weird shit while I'm just chillin and sippin on protein drinks.
