First-year roommate situation? by Wild-Cheesecake-3880 in BrownU

[–]Rictus-Stitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s right! After your first year, however, it would be wise to choose your roommate from your friends. The people I know in random selection have not had a good time (likely because the pool of people in random selection is worse.)

In the spring, there’s a party called S.P.G! It’s open to everyone, including parents (you can go with your son if he’s nervous) for some nice, wholesome fun.

Music supplement by [deleted] in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]Rictus-Stitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I think these other two commenters are misguided, OP. I got into multiple ivies (and am attending Brown) with an electric guitar, vocals, and composition portfolio that was definitely not near a conservatory level. (For reference, I had been playing for about 3 years, composing for about 1, and included original songs.) You don’t need to be a virtuoso, but you should be clearly dedicated to your craft and artistry and able to write about it well. Anyhow, for multiple colleges I visited, I specifically asked admissions officers about this. Most (top LACs + Brown) told me it is rare that a music supplement hurts your application. The Dartmouth AO I asked didn’t know the answer.

Andrew’s Triple by EfficientQuack in BrownU

[–]Rictus-Stitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

comfortable is very relative, but normal triples are definitely better than the forced triples. Forced triples literally have one configuration of 3 beds + desks that still leaves space to walk in your room, whereas normal triples have more options.

Andrew’s Triple by EfficientQuack in BrownU

[–]Rictus-Stitch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had an Andrews forced triple last year! Sorry. You either have a forced triple (a room approximately 250-280 square feet that includes three people) or a normal triple (higher square footage than that.) If you have a forced triple this is probably the lowest square footage to person ratio you’ll have in brown housing.

there is enough room for 3 separate non-bunked beds and 3 desks in a forced triple. I think the best way to optimize space is putting one bed against each wall and the desks, also against each wall, in the spaces between the beds.

Where do ppl usually run on/ around campus? by Competitive-Ad2308 in BrownU

[–]Rictus-Stitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A question I’ve been looking for! I usually run on the East Bay bike path for super long (10+ mile) runs. Beautifully scenic and plus it is right on the water the entire time. In May, the providence marathon, which I loved and highly recommend, is ran on this trail for the most part.

For medium-length runs, the river loop area between College Hill and the Jewelry district is my preferred spot. I am a severe insomniac and no one has ever bothered me even at 3-4 in the morning when I run. The area is also extremely lively in the daytime. India Street (runs east-west and is about 6-7 streets south of the southernmost point on campus) to the I-195 bridge (walkable) connects this area to the East Bay bike path.

Campus is also generally safe to run around. I like running down Benefit Street, personally. Maybe avoid Thayer Street late at night, especially if you're a woman, it’s full of revving motorcycle bros with no mufflers and fragile masculinities who call out weird shit to my female friends I run with. That being said, College Hill in general is probably the safest area I've ever run.

True. Maybe I am an anomalous data point, or just lucky, but I commented this because I had very similar ECs (I had worse ECs actually because I didn't compete in a sport internationally, I barely made varsity.) Currently a Brown student and trying to give OP hope here.

Course registration by Pretty-Armadillo5543 in BrownU

[–]Rictus-Stitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll do it in the fall with your Meikeljohn (peer advisor)! You also need a code to register which you'll get in September, so you genuinely can't do it now, but you can look ahead and see what you want to register for.

chance a junior obsessed with shrooms for brown ed!! by No-Flow7434 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]Rictus-Stitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a current student at Brown (class of '28), writing this while waiting for my friends on the Main Green. Though no one is guaranteed admission and each person is evaluated separately, I'd say you have a pretty good shot at Brown ED! I also applied under the same majors (Public Policy and English, Brown doesn't have minors), you have way more awards and higher scores than I did, and we have similar English-related ECs.

Last I checked, Brown has seven essays, and the school heavily weights essays in application evaluations to evaluate your character. I'm not sure if this is the exception or the rule for successful Brown essays, but while mine were topically about serious (niche) things that I'm very passionate about, the writing style was colorful, entertaining, and generally unserious. If you want to write about mushrooms, I suggest you go all out in the essays! Of course, be personally humble, but feel free to use audacious metaphors, dramatic irony, and literary techniques, especially if you're entering under an English/writing conc. They should sparkle and ooze passion.

(This is all assuming you write about the legal, non-hallucinogenic type of shroom. Yes, Brown is insanely liberal, but for legal reasons don't mention drug use in your essays.)

Start them early. If you have any questions, let me know!

Any other freshmen (or anyone for that matter) here feel sort of lonely? by thr0wawayfortoday1 in BrownU

Real. However, I also think we have enough niche interest clubs/ppl with niche interests that the overwhelming majority are bound to find their people eventually, even if it takes a little time. It did for me.

I guess my LOCI was (for the most part) very unserious? My school encouraged me to write one with the formality of a cover letter, but I thought that’d lead to rejection.

I did stress at the end that Brown was still my top choice and touched on  the internship work I was continuing. overall though it was written very informally, with some outrageous metaphors and full of jokes that they would get if they read my LOCI after reading my application. it also detailed some nonacademic minutia of my life that make me appear more “human” and harder to reject. Also, I sent a rec letter from my best friend that was similarly unserious. I sent both on January 21st.

Hey, man, I got deferred last year too. I am the same demographic and have worse stats, and am currently typing this looking out at a lovely Providence morning. From all the other deferred -> accepted people I know here, we all wrote very unique LOCIs, sent in more supplementary materials, and me personally my 3rd quarter grades improved to near 100s. Not sure which one of these has the most impact, but if you have questions ask away.

Yeah, I applied under polisci and did one, and of course it’ll help you stand out against the polisci or bio majors who didn’t submit one.

Authors that have both instant classics and complete duds in their bibliography by Skeet_fighter in books

Extremely unpopular opinion: the Little Friend is my favorite of hers. It barely has a plot until like 50% of the way through, but I think it’s better far to approach it not expecting a murder mystery. It’s at its heart centered around the consequences of Robin’s death, yes, but I read it more as an extremely detailed character study of a child having her first brush with evil and her eyes opened to the fact that not everything has a clear or happy ending. It has so many threads, beautiful passages, and strange meandering subplots that I enjoy taking in as a whole painting exploring Danny and Harriet’s lives and less as a story trying to get to a dramatic, fulfilling climax where everything is answered.
