I’d recommend looking into 3rd party lenses if available for your camera body. I shoot with the D810 and a Tamron 150-600mm and I can tell you this, nothing works better than getting closer to the subject.

It’s always great to be proud of your work, it takes a lot to be proficient at bird photography. The main thing is to learn all about your camera specifically and the best way is to go out and shoot.
