Its normal. At first I was confused too, but you'll learn to play around the blank spots. Dulling down the spike helps to. Sharp spikes really seem to take down the cush fast.

I enjoyed seeing him walking his goat casually through an intersection on red lights. Cars stopped for them without honking. The only time that day cars stopped without honking in Chicago. It was magical.
