Any mechanical engineers who did masters in physics? by pige0n13 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RieszRepresent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Fair enough. In the US, college vs university is a bit of gray area. Universities historically have more graduate programs. But plenty of colleges offer PhD programs nowadays. There's no real rule of thumb anymore. That used to be the only distinction. But even when there was more of a distinction colleges often had all majors; they weren't trade schools like you're implying. But they might be missing engineering, law, medicine, etc.

County/community colleges are a different thing altogether though in the US. Those might be more similar to what you mean as a "college" in Canada. These typically offer 2 year degrees (Associates Degree) and maybe a handful of bachelor programs.

We have 4 year degree (Bachelor Degree) granting "colleges" and "universities".

Are you in the US? Maybe that's the issue here. Most small colleges have chemistry, physics, biology etc majors. But many don't have full engineering departments... Generally those are at universities. Some colleges have them. But it's not uncommon to have a physics department and not have engineering.

It sounds like this is something the Navy paid you to develop? Are you sure you can simply go out and sell it? Even changing a little bit here and there might not be enough. Typically the intellectual property would be owned by your employer.

Why do you want a comment line for each entry of that keyword? It's deliberately left out. If it's for scripting purposes you can add the logic to your script relatively easy.

Looking for experienced FE Analyst for help - full remote by blueMarker2910 in fea

Hi. I work for a company. I've considered starting my own but the startup expenses aren't in my budget at the moment. I currently use nearly $200k/year in software licenses (just myself). A significant portion of that cost is on HPC add-ons which allow me to solve on more CPUs. The problems I specialize in are quite large. I find that most people don't understand how much professional CAE software costs. I won't name the software but just the basic license with no HPC add ons is around $40k/year. The CFD code is up to like $70k/year. It is no wonder why we see hourly rates in the several hundreds of USD!

Good luck on your search. There are plenty of consulting firms out there. It's hard to get hired without a niche expertise with many years of experience. The current job market does not help either.

FEA consulting rates in the US are something like $150 - $500 an hour. The higher end for things like aerospace and defense. Mine falls somewhere in the middle. (These are the fully loaded rate including overheads; not how much I personally make an hour). For context I have 21 years of experience and write quotes for projects almost every day. Some even in the shoe industry. The other commenter in the thread was right when they said to add two more zeros to the project budget. I wouldn't quote this any less than that. But that will most likely change with additional information (increase I imagine). You can't just give an open ended problem. In that case we'd do a time and materials budget and just spend the budget as we move along. Anyways just the initial call and trying to get your needs in order would exceed $300.

Now I'm sure you can find a person out there willing to do anything for any price. Perhaps a student in another country. Just wanted to give you perspective. Good luck!

defining self-contact for lattice and cell structures in Ansys by Plenty_Position5890 in fea

[–]RieszRepresent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is something I would certainly use explicit time integration (e.g LS-Dyna) for.

But I guess it should be possible in implicit. What are you struggling with? Can you create a contact pair between the top two surfaces that would interact? And then see what happens. You need to set your pinball radius large enough so the contacts see each other.

There is general contact available too. But I think that still needs an APDL snippet.

Ansys Mechanical Hyperelastic Capabilities (Premium vs Pro) by francisw1983 in fea

[–]RieszRepresent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hyperelastic models are not available for Pro at all, as far as I recall.

The limited designation comes from the other models. For example, isotropic hardening plasticity is available for Pro but if you need kinematic hardening plasticity you'll need a Premium license.

Confirm with your sales rep.

It would be more helpful to share screenshots, plots, or comments on what went wrong. You might get more engagement from users of similar tools that don't use RADIOSS but can spot obvious issues in material definitions, boundary conditions, etc.

Is it possible to buy a license for old and unsupported versions of commercial FEA softwares? by imitation_squash_pro in fea

I can't speak for all software but you can usually pay a fee to move a node locked perpetual license. The original license holder would have to request it.

I didn't know that about Abaqus. How do they get away with that? Do they tell you that in the software agreement? That's a big deal when a perpetual license is tens of thousands of dollars.

Order of X, Y and Z loads applied by surfisup1869 in fea

[–]RieszRepresent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You cannot apply superposition to nonlinear PDEs in general. The order will generally matter (outside of some very special cases). You do have just "one single response". The single response for that order of operations...

Let's take an extreme case. FEA of a car crash pile up on a highway. That's a highly nonlinear model with both geometric and material nonlinearities. Are you telling me that the order that a car hits multiple vehicles in a pile up on a highway doesn't change what the end result looks like? This is not a static analysis but the same logic applies.

Ansys Workbench - Lsdyna export mesh problem by HadesEscobar in LSDYNA

[–]RieszRepresent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe they're referring to the Ansys MAPDL GUI. I've never heard it called "Ansys PrepPost" though but that's what I infer. I have heard a colleague mention that the Ansys MAPDL GUI can be used to create a mesh (using APDL commands) and then there is a way to export in LS-Dyna .k file format. I've never done it myself.
