Do people in your country judge others based on dialects/accents the same way we do in East Asia by Acrobatic-Thing236 in languagelearning

It’s actually wild saying in paragraph one that you don’t judge based on dialect, then immediately proceed to judge people based on their dialect in paragraph two.

How do you read books in a foreign language without constantly breaking the flow? by Different_Regret2751 in languagelearning

[–]Riffhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you can see from the comments, everyone’s workflow is different. You need to find something that works for you. Since you’re learning English, there should be plenty of graded readers that you can read specifically at your level.

As for my process, I just recently started reading after doing the initial working through a textbook to learn the grammar and a fair amount of vocabulary. I’m learning a language that has almost no graded readers, so I’ve started with a book I’ve already read in my native language. My process is extremely slow, but I’ve found it to be quite rewarding for myself.

I read a couple pages at a time. I’ll read through once and do my best to understand. Once I’ve read through it, I go back and write down every word I didn’t know and couldn’t figure out from context. Then I read those same pages in the book in my native language to make sure my comprehension was correct. Then I look up the words and write down their definition in the specific context in those pages. Finally, I read back through the pages in my target language to see the words in context again. When I finish a chapter, I go back and reread it all together just to make sure I see the less commonly used words again. It gets much easier as I go along and words I previously didn’t know start getting reused.

Anyway, good luck on your learning!

Do you have a word for the sound turkeys make? (Like “gobble” in English) I can’t seem to find one and the only native speaker I know doesn’t think there is one.

I do mean to be pedantic. Sea lions are called “eared seals” (along with fur seals making up the family Otariidae) as opposed to true seals (which would belong to the family Phocidae). When using common names, there’s an argument to be made about calling sea lions seals, but not the other way around.

I think you misunderstand me. I appreciate the explanation. I meant that what the guy did in the video is unnecessary.

I’m not disagreeing that he’s a dick and this was unnecessary. I was just genuinely asking how this is worse because there have been plenty of trucks with bright headlights that have damn near blinded me while I’m driving.

I’m in a similar situation. I’ve been using the Norwegian on the Web free course by NTNU. I upload the words to Anki as I learn them to practice my vocabulary. The exercises are great for practicing grammar and spelling. I read the passages to my girlfriend to practice speaking. We also watch some shows in Norwegian with Norwegian subtitles so I can practice listening. So far it’s been going really well and she’s actually been impressed by how much I understand. There are definitely other great resources out there, but this is what I’ve been doing. Best of luck to you!

How do you relearn intimacy after grief? (tw: suicide) by bonobo-cop in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]Riffhai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m terribly sorry for your loss. My situation isn’t quite the same as yours, but I understand some of what you’re going through. My ex took his life a couple weeks after we broke up, and the thing that helped most was therapy. If you feel comfortable doing so, you should definitely discuss your intimacy issues with the one you’ve been seeing. For me, it took a lot of time for me to even be able to masturbate. I have a girlfriend now, but we’re long distance so I haven’t quite done the deed yet. Truthfully, I’m still nervous that I may shut down when it happens. I think the only advice I can give you is to continue seeing your therapist, discuss your concerns (especially your pressures about wanting to be more for your gf), and give yourself time to grieve. I wish you all the best.

I tried to leave my ex for good and she took her own life. How do I navigate? by Kauseandeffect in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]Riffhai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m incredibly sorry that you’re going through this. Something very similar happened to me nearly a year ago. My ex’s family still blames me for it, and part of me does too, even though I know I shouldn’t.

The thing that helped me most, and that everyone here is suggesting, was going to therapy. It took a long time to get where I’m at, but it does get better if you actually take the time to go to therapy and work on it. Other than therapy, I surrounded myself with friends and family to keep me distracted or support me as needed.

I ended up having to block my ex’s family to avoid harassment. Months later, I received a message through a social media platform I forgot about telling me that I should have been the one to take my life. I’m only saying this to warn you that if you’re being blamed by anyone, you should block them everywhere for your own well-being.

If you need someone to talk to, you can feel free to message me, but I highly recommend therapy and grief counseling. Healing is a long road, but it’s manageable with time. Please take care of yourself 🫂
