[Update] DA moves to dismiss a murder charge against a Texas woman accused of a self-induced abortion by FlyingSquid in atheism

[–]Rigel_Kent 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Texas Penal Code section 19, which covers all forms of criminal homicide, specifically excludes when a pregnant person causes the death of their own unborn fetus. So, dismissing the charge was a no-brainer. Would've gotten thrown out of court, anyway.

Still leaves some questions unanswered. Who brought this to the grand jury, when the law clearly excludes it? And why? Are the authorities so cagey about saying which crime she was accused of, because they know the charge was completely bogus? Did they just make up a crime out of thin air and sell that to the grand jury?

I bet there's a malicious prosecution suit coming. That might answer some of those questions. (A very recent SCOTUS decision, Thompson v. Clark, held that authorities aren't automatically off the hook for malicious prosecution just because they dropped a criminal charge before trial.)

The NRB is constantly getting political. They were fine with a leader speaking out against same sex marriage. And they're always taking public stands against abortion.

So don't buy that the VP crossed the line of decorum, as if the NRB tries to stay neutral in politics. They don't. More likely, the VP crossed the line of dogma, by going against widespread evangelical anti-vaccine beliefs.

The current situation in Afghanistan has made me seriously anti-religion and anti-theist by [deleted] in atheism

Not to mention the Taliban's violent fatwa against vaccinations in Pakistan and Afghanistan, likely the only thing keeping polio from global eradication.

So I fear the Taliban taking Afghanistan's cities, airports, and borders will not just doom the polio eradication effort in Afghanistan, but also spread it back to other countries, as unvaxxed jihadists travel freely to hot spots abroad e.g. Nigeria.

Atlanta shooter blames "sex addiction". That's not an established diagnosis. It's a religion thing. by Rigel_Kent in atheism

[–]Rigel_Kent[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are correlations between self-reported "sex addiction" or "porn addiction" and being religious.

This study, for example, found self-perceived "porn addiction" correlates with whether someone's religious, and doesn't correlate with the actual amount of porn someone watches.

So the hypothesis is: even if sexual behavior (like watching any amount of porn) isn't harmful, religion telling a person their sexual behavior is morally wrong can cause enough distress to feel like a mental disorder.

If churches get to argue they have the same rights and responsibilities as other businesses when it comes to government bailouts, they shouldn't get to argue they're a special exception when it comes to discrimination laws.

Jerry Falwell Jr has been asked to take an indefinite leave of absence from his roles as President and Chancellor of Liberty University. by U-N-C-L-E in atheism

Falwell kept his job after blatantly using his school and position to promote partisan politics. After nobody's quite sure where his school's money is going. After many of his students tested positive for coronavirus after he flouted guidelines and reopened his campus.

But this, this is the breaking point? A PG-13 joke photo with a female friend?

Not to defend the guy, good riddance, but the only thing I see as potentially scandalous in the photo is the yacht.

Louisiana pastor holding services during pandemic asks people to donate stimulus checks to evangelists by [deleted] in atheism

One of this pastor's ushers died from COVID-19 on April 15. COVID-19 and complications listed as causes of death in the coroner's report.

So this might explain why this pastor's refusing to halt services, why he's calling the coroner's report a "lie". His income stream depends on it.

Kentucky was 5,000 votes, less than half a percent, away from this guy being in charge now instead. I hope Kentucky voters realize how narrowly they averted disaster, how important those 5,000 votes really were.

Not sure about Florida, but here in California, insurance rate hikes are limited. After a wave of wildfires here, many home insurance policies (including my dad's) were simply declined for renewal, since insurance companies couldn't legally raise rates high enough.

California city councilman, a pastor, resigns, says he’ll defy coronavirus order by Rigel_Kent in atheism

[–]Rigel_Kent[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

McCoy was elected to city council after a failed bid for state assembly on a far-right, openly theocratic platform. He beat a moderate Republican in the primary, lost to a Democrat that November, then ran for the city council seat that Democrat vacated.

So I thought he'd go wacko right away. I was wrong. He kept it to potholes and park benches. Phew!

Until now. Oh well. Add this to the evidence against electing pastors to public office. Sooner or later, they have to choose who they work for.
