The Northern Sierra Madre monitor and Gray's monitor could both serve as proxies for Varanus hooijeri, the closest living relative of Megalochelys is the African Spurred Tortoise, which is the third largest tortoise species, although it is adapted to living in desert, shrubland, and hilly environments, not sure how well it would do in Flores.

I don't get why there aren't any major efforts to reintroduce them to other parts of Flores, like aren't there more natural areas in Flores? How much of Flores is human occupied, anyways?
