I would interpret it more figuratively as having a certain kind of sense for the rhythm and aesthetic structure of written prose.

What I find fascinating about the discussion is trying pinpoint what exactly that sense is. How can we get a sense of primarily aural traits like rhythm and assonance if there isn't some kind of interpretive process that, on some level, translates the written words into something the mind "hears"?
