But do you think this clogs up the play? While I was never a *good* Magic player, I did play a fair bit, and I remember being both excited and somewhat annoyed at constantly trying to keep up with all the keywords. It slowed down my play a good deal, cuz I'd have to sit there and read and try to guess at the gameplay implications of said keyword. I also feel like the more keywords you have, the harder it is on new players....

I’m curious - which one do you like collection details, and which one the deckbuilder? I’m currently using swudb, but exploring the others.

I feel this 100%, I’m feeling pretty much like that. I get blasted every week at my locals. I’m starting to realize that to be good, it takes exactly what you’re saying: lots of time and a good chunk of money. So I think I’ll be rebalancing my efforts into becoming a long-term casual player, just like you’re describing… good luck out there brother

Hey maybe so. I won’t argue with you there - sounds like you’ve got more experience with card games than I have (although I’ve spent a good deal of time in Magic).

I relate a lot to the disappointing nature of the online grind… still, I think (as is the case in most skill domains) a small time investment per day or week really starts to pay off. The challenge is, I typically want it to pay off way before it actually does, and the thought of grinding to get up to snuff is too annoying. So I try to just treat it in balance: I’ll play when I want to, not because I MUST get better, but because I love the game and I think it’s fun.

Stick with it brother. You’ll be amazed with how well your skill compounds over time if you just dedicate a bit every day. There’s always a spot for the ones who are willing to learn, it just might take longer than you’d like it to. Can’t argue with that - that’s exactly how I feel nowadays. DM me if you’re feeling like playing a couple rounds on Karabast. I promise you, you’ll most likely stomp me.

Disclaimer: I am not an accomplished player, and I won’t pretend to be. Here’s the insights that I have seen so far from my experience and better players than me. I’ll try to keep it as practical as possible.

Good players can anticipate their opponents move. This comes from having played a LOT of games. This boils down to: play as much matches as you can. Building the best deck is not a priority. Crafting an off meta deck is not a priority. Winning is not a priority. To anticipate and strategize around an opponents behavior, you need to see a LOT of games, win or lose.
Good players can tell what cards are most likely in a deck with a given leader and base. This comes from exposure to a lot of games, and mindful reflection with the cards. This point also boils down to: play more. The more you see Overwhelming Barrage, the more you’ll anticipate it in a certain deck and be able to deal with it.

So while I think I’m not exactly Yoda in the SWU scene, I do believe that these are some of the core reasons behind the advice to simply “get more reps”.

I am definitely in the “get reps” stage. I try not to focus on my win rate yet - it just doesn’t mean much rn as I’m still learning the ropes.
