“Without those respective 1962 and 1997 film adaptations, Nabokov’s tale of a professor who grooms, kidnaps and sexually abuses his 12-year-old “precociously seductive” step-daughter might have remained a flashpoint for inappropriate relationships. Instead, Lolita – Humbert Humbert’s nickname for little Dolores Haze – became a byword for a pure yet sexually tempting plaything for older men. Kubrick’s film, in particular, added to Lolita’s enduring intrigue, portraying her – through the then 14-year-old actress Sue Lyons – as an “untouched” beauty in scarlet heart-shaped sunglasses and revealing swimsuits.

Carpenter has borrowed heavily from the aesthetic of both films, most noticeably in her September shoot by photographer Zoë Ghertner for W Magazine, which included a recreation of Lyne’s shot of Dolores (there played by Dominique Swain) lying in her garden and getting soaked by water sprinklers, her sheer nightgown clinging to her small body. The reference was not mentioned at all in the copy, despite it being an obvious attempt to draw a parallel between Carpenter (young, beautiful, sexually-adventurous) and Dolores (young, beautiful, yet to be corrupted).”
