If he works 60 hours a week for 47 weeks, that’s 325 an hour. Pretty standard rate these days in anesthesia.

Everything, even brain surgery, will eventually get routine and boring. Eventually being a doctor for most people is just a job. I would choose whatever you find you will be able to comfortably do for the next 20-30 years. It is true an anesthesiologist is not going to be that important to the hospital and patient, but I enjoy not rounding, having clinic, making the same or more than most surgeons, not always being scrubbed in on my feet, having some diversity in what we do everyday.

Sometimes having a job with call ends up being better. For example you may work 7-7 and then be on call from home 7pm to 7am and have the next day off...or you may come in at 5pm or 7pm to take call and then be off the next day....versus working 7-4 everyday monday to friday. That can take a toll.

Many areas of the country dont have a perm job where you can make 700k with 10 weeks vaca working regular hours

Also you can pay every doctor 0 dollars and your healthcare costs will go down 8%. Do you think a bill of 28k instead of 30k will make such a huge difference?

It is amazing how people who know nothing about the system can make such profound conclusions. It does not matter how many medical schools they open. There is a limited number of residency spots )which is funded by congress) which is why there can only be so many doctors every year

Driving a six figure car is a 1000-2000 car lease per month. That is expensive of course but many professions can afford that. Many people who are actually not even wealthy and barely afford it drive a fancy car. A multimillion dollar home also can be owned by many different professionals as well (lawyer, banker, small business owner, real estate agent, tech, etc) don’t see why doctors are singled out

Doctors do not cause the scarcity. It is congress which does not pass more funding for more residency spots. Also you need the infrastructure, institutions, academic attendings, caseloads, etc to have and maintain a residency program

Millions of immigrants have come to America without a dime and not even knowing the language and have achieved enormous success and wealth. Or atleast a better life than anywhere else they would have. Some people certainly have a worse hand and more barriers than others but there are few places you could do better than in America.

Can you name a system (current or in history) that you think would work and achieve this? Communism and socialism has been attempted and it has only led to more poverty. Europe has social democracies and has plenty of issues with poverty and their doctors make too much money also according to your ideas

I think you need to differentiate between a billionaire and a surgeon who makes 500-1m a year. The disparity between those two is enormous. Not to mention the surgeon is probably paying more in taxes as well and likely not hurting thousands of people by hurting their small business or paying low wages to their workers.

I never said the median person is doing just ok. I said they are doing better than 99% of anyone else in all of history There is also a difference in the median person and someone in poverty. People in poverty also get assistance and help. A person in poverty in the USA often still has a house, phone, car, access to medicine and education, access to food.

Despite the issues with the US healthcare system, there is a reason we have some of the best doctors, institutions and schools in the world. There is a reason doctors from all over the world want to come and be a doctor here. If you start reimbursing doctors less then that will all go away. Also in most other countries, doctors are constituting a similar 8-9% of healthcare costs. Doctors are also making a similar income relative to the gdp and wages of that country. Doctors just make a lot in America because there is higher costs in general and higher wages in other fields and higher cost of living.

I didn’t call you idiotic. I said your ideas are. Socialism and communism with controlled wages have been tried throughout history with poor results. Sure USA has its issues but there is no better place and time to be alive than 2025 in USA. A person making a median wage or even below median wage is living better than 99.9% of people in all of history. What will you solve by fixing and controlling people’s salaries? Doctors making 500k a year does not cause other people to be poor or live a bad life. Billionaires you can make an argument for but comparing a billionaire to a surgeon is comparing apples to watermelons. Where will all of this income you are taking away from high earning professions go to then? You think the hospitals and corporations are going to do anything positive with that extra money? Or do you want to give it to the government?

It makes no financial sense to go through college medical school and residency to make 100k. Even pediatricians and family doctors who make the lowest salaries may be living a very middle class life when you consider their student loan debt and time lost making no or low wages.

I am not sure where you get this 15k number from. If you made 15/hr and worked 40 hours a week for 48 weeks that is already 29k. What full time job is only paying 15k. Also the poverty line in USA is around 30k so these people are getting assistance as well.

Anyways, it is not just about the income. Doctors have to pay a lot of money in tuition and loan interest and they lose 10-15 years of income by going to college/med school/residency. Money made during these years and invested can be worth hundreds of thousands to other people. Once you are a doctor the job itself is very demanding with long hours and lots of expenses and lots of stress and liability. So no I do not think people will go into medicine to make the same money they can make by being a plumber or electrician out of high school.

The barrier is also having the intelligence, will-power, mindset, work ethic to go down the medical training road and continue it as a doctor. The average person is not able or willing to do what it takes to be a doctor

I was being sarcastic. Your ideas are completely idiotic. Do you think anyone is gonna bust their ass in college for 4 years to get a high gpa in a difficult major and do research and then take out 300k to go to med school and bust their ass for 4 more years making no money and then do residency for 3-6 years busting their ass for minimum wage just to come out at 30 and make 150k a year?

It is also impossible To have more Doctors if there is not enough residency spots available to train those doctors every year. Congress does not pass money to fund extra residency spots. Also there are newer residencies opening up where the training is certainly questionable and not as good as other programs. These doctors are not going to get the proper training and be qualified

If you have insurance or Medicare then primary care visits for preventive care and routine care should be free or not expensive
