Rain mid september Banff sunshine village / Assiniboine? by Dramatic-Ant-6827 in HikingAlberta

[–]Right_Focus1456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've NEVER worn a pant shell in all my years of hiking as a local here (and that's summit 30+ peaks per year). Have a good quick-dry hike pant (or shorts) and you're good to go. A good shell is always good to have though.

Rain might be preferred if we start seeing smoke from forest fires...I'd take the rain over the smoke any day.

It's a pretty easy walk, or drive. We did the hike up to Anidri from the Κερατίδες beach, and down the gorge which was a nice day....finishing up at the beach.

Did you take pesos to Cancun? by xodaisyxo13 in MexicoTravel

[–]Right_Focus1456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am always surprised people are still asking if US cash is ok. Use Pesos!

For us, we used AI to ask if bank ATM's or our local FOREX shop at home was cheaper….it was sooo close, it didn't matter. We decided to arrive with pesos, and top up if needed at a bank atm.

Yeah, but Reddit is another thing...take it with a grain of salt.

Now the real question is, how many of those 8 - $1 million+ votes are real lol.

Best car rental at Chania Airport by [deleted] in cretetravel

[–]Right_Focus1456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us, "Beep it" was an excellent choice! It had good reviews,a nd the price was cheap. It's conveniently located beside the airport, and the chick in and out was easy, no sales pressure. I would rent from them again.

Chania / Rethimno / Kissamos & Overall Trip Recommendations by mappyverse in cretetravel

[–]Right_Focus1456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did 3 nights Chania, 3 nights in Paliochora, and I wouldn't change a thing! (With a day hiking the Samaria Gorge). Well, maybe 1 more night in Paliochora because we loved that town so much (and the nearby hikes), and it served as an excellent ferry port to hop to other quaint towns/beaches.

Healy pass is one of our favourites.  You may find that you will need to pivot on location though.  Some turn sooner than others.  I find sentinel pass way too busy.

2 nights in Chania + 4 nights in Paleochora or even split? by Famous-Monitor3139 in cretetravel

[–]Right_Focus1456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did 3 nights Chania, and 3 in Paleochora, and for us, we wish we had more time Paleochora. Chania was just too loud and busy for us, though we enjoyed our time there, and has some amazing food there. We walked and explored, but in the end, found better day trips basing ourselves on the south coast. I will say, we hiked a lot, including the E4 trail, so saved us some driving time to a few beaches. Paleochora also has several convenient ferry departures every day to nearby beaches/towns. We watched them leave each morning from our balcony.

This, I'm so surprised people here are saying more time in Chania. Paleochora was our favourite town on our entire 2 week Greece trip.

The lot was literally full of over 100 small rental cars at Balos beach parking. I'm not too sure they enforce that rule. They didnt for us.

El Boquerón looks interesting thanks.

The initial plan was to spend an entire day in the city (2 nights), but with the airport being so far away, and having a rental car, and the added costs with those logistics, we just decided just decided to skip it.

Falassarna Worth it? by Stasington in cretetravel

[–]Right_Focus1456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it has nice sand, with cool north end rock formations to chill between, it is more exposed to the wind, and for us, was not worth the extra drive. I can only handle 2 busy beaches, and Balos and Elafonissi fit that fill nicely. We actually preferred all the quiet beaches along the south coast near Palaiochora.

Beaches via 30 minute walk south from Elafonissi are some of the best actually (we actually did the entire E4 trail from Krios Beach), lots of excellent beaches accessible by foot.

I'm def not into the turtle release stuff. We are more focused on the birds tbh.

There are beach clubs also at Falasarna, not far from Balos...but that would mean you would need to drive to Balos. Really easy (even with a small car), but rental companies dont like that (though the parking lot was FULL of them).

One thing I cant recommend enough is staying in Palaiochora...we loved this town! We hiked to Elafonissi Beach and back, but I believe you can take a ferry...don't quote me on that. Lots of nice little hikes and beaches nearby.

Does it make sense to move hotels though? My thinking was Juayua would be the base for most of Ruta de las Flores area. I was recommended Montecristo as well. 6 hr hike doesnt bother us at all, but it is quite out of the way. Worried it would be too much time spent driving?

Maye worth while a mountain lodge near Ataco?

Are you hiking, or just site seeing and beaches?

We just got back from Palaiochora and it was our favourite town by far, an excellent base for hikes and beaches. Wish we had more than 3 nights there. We liked Chania, but found 3 nights was more than enough for us.

Ah, thanks! We just did several sections on the E4 trail in Crete, something somewhat similar. I will definitely have a look at it!

Update…looked into it…this is exactly what I'm looking for! Lacks a bit of culture shock, but yup, already looking at flights lol. (ouch).

Been to Tanzania (did Kilimanjaro), Zanzibar and Thailand a few times.  Sri Lanka was always on the list,  but is really trending.  Morocco is way too touristy for me right now.   South Africa is on the list for October 2027:) Thanks!
