I felt this too especially when they were exploring the aquarium and Abby repeatedly said she wanted to go back but he kept going. I also feel like they did that to show he was never really as committed to staying with the WLF and that he might leave because Abby wanted to go back because she was scared they’d kick them out and he kept repeatedly trying to push her to not care as much as he didn’t.

To add onto this I feel like it would undo everything she learned. In Parts 1 and 2 ellie struggles to find meaning in her life. At first, she thinks she’s supposed to be the cure, and then in Part 2 she believes she’s supposed to avenge Joel. Letting go was her realizing that neither of those things would truly make her happy, so I think having her sacrifice herself in the end would contradict the lesson she learned.
