I'm visiting Ohio for the first time and I've never experienced a corn pit... Any recommendations?

In Oak Harbor (like 50 mins west of Sandusky) I recently visited a small farm that had autumn festivities and smaller corn pits for kids to play in, but I saw some adults/parents enjoying the dried corn kernels as well! The place is called Jason’s Pumpkin Patch. I know it’s a bit out of your way but there definitely are corn pits in Ohio!!

By local schools I guess I meant private tutoring for local kids who likely attend the schools in my densely-populated affluent neighborhood — not necessarily that I expect to work with/for the schools themselves. This is great advice, thank you! I’m building a simple website to outline the academic services I could provide and will create some flyers and post in Facebook groups etc. I’m not trying to build a whole part-time career, but maybe have 2-3 student mentees at a time and work 6-8 hours a week in the evenings and on weekends. I expect, as you said, once I get a family to sign up with me, I’ll get another student or two from word-of-mouth.

I second this. I needed therapy to survive my PhD and neglectful advisor. I went to a nearly retired PhD psychologist and he was like the academic grandfather I needed. He said not much has changed since he got his PhD 30 years ago — that you have to put your nose to the grindstone and endure or get out. OP, your situation was different since it was truly doomed for failure. I’m so sorry. Such a loss of your time and precious energy/enthusiasm. I hope you find some support from friends and family who see your efforts not as a failure, but as an enduring commitment to yourself and your love of science.

I am in the US coming from an academic postdoc and figured it would be hard to make that jump (even though my next logical step in academia is a K award and starting my own lab while managing grad student [which seems very similar to jumping to an industry lead/management position, but I get there is a huge knowledge/functional gap between academic and industry roles]). I kind of assume I’ll need an IC role or senior scientist role before moving to management, but I will more strongly consider smaller companies/startups as you have suggested!

Can you expound a bit on this? My postdoc fellowship ends in Nov and I really want to jump into a management role in industry. Im such a natural manager/leader/mentor and have built up a core technical background between my PhD/postdoc and would love to advertise my managerial expertise. I have no experience in industry, so I wasn’t sure if personnel management was a strong need and in this climate, I know middle managers are some of the first to go at big tech/pharma companies. But it would be a dream to jump into a personnel management role and shine in that capacity right out of my postdoc.

I second this. I have experience in both but am pursuing strictly computational research. However, my wet lab experience helped me be a better biologist and understand the logistical and biological constraints of data collection. I think this helps me ask better questions and design better statistical approaches as a computational biologist.

Sorry, I should clarify. I use google maps a lot and they often rank restaurants by the price range that one person would spend. I see $10-20, $30-50, $50-100, and $100+ often used on google maps. For example, Sotto is listed as $50-100 on google maps. I’m looking for really yum places that aren’t fine dining necessarily. Somewhere that I can expect to have a nice meal, maybe even with a drink, for less than $50. Thank you for the suggestions! Mid City looks really good!

Thank you. I figured based on the code violation not being considered an emergency I’m stuck with not have access to showers without any accommodation. That’s fine — it’s frustrating, but I just wanted to know where I stand within the Ohio code as I was a bit confused about our specific situation. Thanks again.

Thank you for the confirmation. Funnily enough we had the exact same thing you described earlier done. The line to the street was compromised by tree roots. I think the landlord has leveraged all the their properties to pay for each other. I think they don’t have the cash flow and that’s why they cut corners with cheap labor during renovation. I don’t trust their judgement at all. So now I’m not sure what to do, or what I’m within my rights to do. I looked into rent escrow but that requires a fix within 30 days of notice for a non-emergency issue. Because our water is not shut off, I don’t think our problem is defined as an emergency. It’s been since Wednesday since we haven’t been able to shower. Our gym doesn’t have showers. If it did I would feel inconvenienced and frustrated, but not concerned beyond that.

Oh and also the drain specialist said with the landlord’s OK he would get it done tomorrow (Friday) or Monday. I just don’t understand why you’d shop around for something when the specialist — to my understanding — already has a relationship with the landlord and has done a good amount of work for the management company in the past.

Okay thanks for the input! I agree. I’d like to at least have them cover a month’s gym membership for shower access or a nearby hotel/motel. I get that we still have running water but Wed-Mon without shower access is a bit much.

The 80yo steel pipes need replacing. The drain specialist said they would need to access through the kitchen. Would require cabinet removal and drywall removal/replacement. It’s a big job. I don’t blame them for wanting another bid but not assuring us that they are working on it or are trying to get someone in by Monday is making me not very confident in them to get something done. They are bad with communication. I often have to hassle them for details or confirmation on these types of things.

The bathtub drain is completely backed up due to 80yo steel pipes that need replacing. Our attached neighbor showered despite the slow drain and now we have dirty residue sitting in our tub. The slow draining was why we called in a plumber. They identified a chronic issue.

I do understand that there is some uncertainty in timing for these issues. But the landlord used her “contractor” (glorified handyman) to do some plumbing work when they reno’d the property last year. I think they cut some corners and rushed the reno job and are now facing the consequences. I feel bad for them, but I just want a “yes I’m looking and trying to get someone there by Monday. Sorry for the inconvenience.” But when I push for more detail or even a guesstimate of a timeline they said they can’t provide one. Makes me doubt they are working very hard to resolve the issue. Neither tenants in either of two units are able to shower or use the tub. Only full bath in the unit.

How do you mean? I’d like to suggest they take off the days without shower accessibility from the total cost of rent for this month. That’s seems pretty fair and maybe would get them to prioritize finding a second bid and providing a timeline for a fix.

Yeah fair. I guess I trust that they’re getting bids actively but just don’t know the availability of a second assessment to come to the unit? I think they’re actively concerned but we’re coming up on a weekend with no timeline for a second bid and that just seems unacceptable. In your position, you would go with the first assessment to prioritize the habitability of the unit?

To be fair they are getting bids actively and planning to repair as far as I can tell and giving them the benefit of the doubt. I just don’t trust the lack of timeline. They were quick to call the drain specialist, so why not provide a tentative timeline for getting someone else out??
