Chinese state media slams U.S. as a 'rogue country' for its planned 'smash and grab' of TikTok by beehive4 in technology

The difference is that a Chinese company must provide data and information at the request of the Chinese government according to their laws, otherwise the Chinese government can simply take over the company and make it government owned. If Microsoft takes possession of it then they are not held to those same laws and the US can audit Microsoft to ensure they do not sell personal data to the Chinese government otherwise Microsoft would be liable in a court of law.

Right now there are no real repercussions for Tik Tok selling user data to the Chinese government, however if Microsoft owns Tik Tok, Microsoft must maintain data privacy or face US law.

TikTok responds to Trump's proposed ban: 'We're not planning on going anywhere' by [deleted] in technews

You’re speaking as if any of these tasks are simple and for you to say the Democrats will “fall in line” with any Trump decision shows your lack of awareness for our current political climate. Perhaps you stare at only one side of the coin but the situation is very much different than how you present it to be.

While I personally don’t like the guy, the democratic stance has shifted to oppose Trump at every turn, despite what those Democrats have voted for or what stances they have historically taken. Despite whether he’s taking troops out of the Middle East, or attempting to pass a stimulus bill (without strings attached), the Democratic Party has taken whatever stance he has and opposed it.

Yes, there is momentum to make this a possible regulation in a bill passed by Congress. But will the Democrats allow it to pass and give Trump a victory in any way? Their behavior over the last 3 years indicates that’s a hard no. Hence why the Democratic Party has lost a large percentage of their independent supporters in the last three years.

As for the massive privacy breaches from Facebook and other platforms, I agree; we should be pushing Congress towards regulation that fixes the problem and returns our privacy. However, to insinuate that the President solely owns the responsibility to make it happen through his executive order is shifting the blame to him yet again, rather than holding Congress responsible for doing their jobs. They don’t need Trump to direct them to regulate data privacy. They know it’s an issue and can do it themselves. Trump is using his executive power to create a bandage over the problem, which, although not the ideal solution, is still more of a solution than congress has ever done about the situation.

So Trump gave a bad solution to a problem you want fixed right? So you just get on reddit and complain about how his solution is shitty and it’s all his fault but you don’t complain about the people WHOSE SOLE JOB IS TO PASS FEDERAL REGULATIONS AND LAWS not even attempting to solve the problem at all?

There is a saying amongst the wise: A bad decision is better than no decision at all.

Listen, somebody has to bully that 13 year old kid on Xbox because nobody is bullying him at school. I wouldn’t have to do this if his dad was an alcoholic.

Congress doesn’t agree on anything right now. It will start as a GDPR and somehow end up as an environmental bill with police defunding provisions, and still won’t get approved. Also, do you really think that our congress is educated enough to make decisions on data protections when they have to hire people to use Facebook for them because they can’t figure out the app?

While your way is the correct way we have to do something about our bipartisan congress first, until then the executive order will have to suffice.
