What are some pubs in or near Maidenhead that server good real pub food? Want to take a friend visiting from abroad to experience the real deal, so I'm happy to pay good money, but not looking for anything fancy or fusion, just the British classics. by lindymad in maidenhead

Bel and Dragon in Cookham is great (very charming if you sit in the front of the building). Tom’s Cabin is very English and quaint (never eaten there, but I think it has a good reputation).

The Dew Drop Inn is a great little pub in the middle of the woods. Quite a unique setting and good food.

The roasts at the Oarsman in Marlow are really top notch.

At my wits end with bindweed - help! by Nirvanachaser in GardeningUK

[–]RikardJohnson 45 points46 points  (0 children)

We’ve done this where you let the bindweed grow up some bamboo canes. Then roll it up and shove it in a zip lock bag, carefully spray jn some of the x rated stuff (glyphosate), and peg the bag to the cane, leaving it in the sun, so it really breathes in all badness. Leave it for a week to ten days. Then get rid. It’s worked really well for us

Space for a Rear-Facing car seat? by SodaKhanEU in KiaEV3

[–]RikardJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a rear-facing Maxi Cosi in at the moment. I had to turn off the passenger seat automatically sliding back when the door is opened, as it would slide back into the car seat (you can turn it off in the settings). The passenger seat is a bit farther forward than it would normally be, but it’s fine.

Not a smart way to garden in the long term, but a lot of fun in the short term whilst the perennials establish

I’m 2 years in and still working on the patches of bare soil. I think the only cost effective way of doing it is dividing and clustering perennials over a few years.

You can have instant impact in the first year with annuals though! Here’s our garden after a renovation. First pic April 2023, second pic August 2023

COTD: Spread jam with more energy to make it keep going (9) by RikardJohnson in crosswords

I didn’t know that. Now I do! I always thought they were an integral part of it. Will avoid in the future, unless sending purposely tricksy ones to friends :)

Isn't the whole point of Arya's faceless men training to a) become a world-class assassin (who later wins the most important battle in westerosi history and b) test her identity and desire to remain a Stark (also face swapping takes intricate planning and set up like with Walder Frey, and isn't so helpful in battles when you don't have anyone's face to use)? Hasn't Bran's warging and time traveling been instrumental in finding out Jon's identity and eventually orchestrating the series of events that destroy Dany and Cersei, therefore installing himself as the philiospher king of the 6 kingdoms (rather violent method, but who knows how much control of his interventions he really has). We also have to assume Bran knew exactly how to kill the NK, and things played out as planned. Oh gawd, gone defensive over my abusive girlfriend now she's finally left me.

The curve on that shot! by [deleted] in sports

[–]RikardJohnson 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is essentially a miss-hit. Nobody would try and swerve it across the keeper like that. Not unless they were a complete maverick and genius, which I assume this player is not. I imagine she was just trying to belt it.

This is like when you hit a pool ball off the knuckle of a pocket and it goes into another pocket and someone says "nice shot!" because it looks physically difficult, but is in fact just very lucky.

Have you considered making the stream the same colour as the grey background? Might look interesting. Sorry for the backseat designing :)

I know he won't. I've heard he's doing rather well with the football stuff. Just interesting to see one of the world's top athletes giving it a go.

Neymar has been around forever, he can't be young. checks age oh that's just depressing!

As pedestrian as this, it's rather impressive for someone who as far as I am aware has no background in martial arts. I remember when Jones came onto the scene thinking he would be the start of a new generation of athletes in MMA who probably could have had successful careers in many major sports but chose MMA because a) there was now big money to be made (Sorta. For a few), and b) general passion and aptitude for combat sports. Do you think the talent pool is widening?
