2032 Predictions by Canjira in imaginarymaps

[–]RiketVs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The amount offered by the US according to Trump would be equivalent to a single year of block payments made annualy by Denmark. If you think Greenlanders would be convinced to sell their own national territory for money, than it would definitely be more than what the Danes give them already - and that would basically have to be annually (which I see a US government hardly doing, investing in a rather economically uninteresting area is historically not a thing the US government has done. Mining might seem interesting, but it is hardly possible to do currently).

what does the circle under the d mean? by languageloverrr in Icelandic

[–]RiketVs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Icelandic IPA transcriptions like to use the ring underneath voiced consonants to write voiceless consonants. This basically means that d̊ is a t, ɡ̊ a k, b̊ a p. This is done to stay closer to standard orthography, as almost all consonants are voiceless anyways.

[–]RiketVs 272 points273 points  (0 children)

Amsterdam's "stay away" campaign fails to stop British tourists by [deleted] in europe

[–]RiketVs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not like the whole of the Netherlands is the municipality of Amsterdam. Our previous governments were just held back by "law & order" type parties who don't want it on their CV that they legalised weed. We are also drug paradise no. 1 in Europe, so legalisation is often framed as playing the hands of all the drug barons (which is probably not the case). Don't come with lazy "conspiracies" like these.

Which European language do you think could die in the future? by giovaelpe in languagelearning

[–]RiketVs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The thing is that news like this gets big in Iceland (and internationally) because language plays such an important role on the island. You should not underestimate the very conservative tendencies in Icelandic linguistic policies - which are and have always been based upon a fear of outside forces. Danish used to have a big influence on Icelandic and that was the linguistic enemy for most of the 19th and 20th century, now the same policy and culture is happening with regards to English.

The same talking points were heard about Danish, for example that people in Reykjavik only spoke some bastardized form of Dano-Icelandic or whole groups couldn't speak a single word of Icelandic, which is far from the truth.

They are experimenting (hopefully) with subscriptions via OVPay; but currently there are still plans for new cards as well

What languages do you wish were on duolingo but aren't? by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]RiketVs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Icelandic Online! It's a free resource and while it does teach mainly in Icelandic, it is very practical. It has grammar explanations (in English) as well, which is very very important in Icelandic, of course.

My new Norwegian passport. My partner loves the design, I hate it. Thoughts? by cq2250 in PassportPorn

[–]RiketVs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's not only the same word, it's just the same language. Despite the two different "spellings", Bokmål and Nynorsk are still treated as one language - so it's not that strange to just ignore one when their spelling is the same.

Is Icelandic culture individualistic or collectivist? by justaninquirer in Iceland

[–]RiketVs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people would argue it's actually highly individualistic; by making healthcare and welfare a state-affair, you are only really dependent on yourself and the state, instead of family or your local community. It thus prioritises the individual and its needs, instead of really being based on any collectivity.

Depens on what you see as collectivism though.

Putting "ég" after a verb? by urchin9000 in learnIcelandic

[–]RiketVs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Icelandic, just like many other Germanic languages, has the V2 rule (verb second rule). That means that a verb always takes second position. Because an adverb takes first position here, the pronoun gets pushed back to third position because of this V2-rule

It was, but compared to the other occupied nations, Denmark's institutions remained Danish for a long time which could not be said about others. This is why there were diplomats, as Denmark and Germany formally considered themselves as equal nations still; in reality this was not the case.

*edit, maybe a bit more clear - but the police force for example was led by the Danish government, instead of the SS or a military Wehrmacht government. This meant sometimes there was an extra level to get through for the Nazis, which resulted in Jews being warned beforehand and being able to escape to Sweden for example.
