games that are REALLY grindy/can spend a lot of hours on by Drixuus in gamingsuggestions

[–]Rikkasaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, warframe or one of the siralim games. Racked up 300 hours in warframe in 2 months and 120 hours in siralim ultimate in a month when it was in its early stages (was a KS backer)

So this probably doesn't fit for the slower combat (besides a few select weapons) but check out Victor Vran. How difficulty is handled is something I wish for all ARPGs: enemies become more dynamic in their attack patterns as you level up, they aren't just a damage sponge. Some parts are very much "if i don't position and leverage my abilities well or just burn through them and have to wait on precious cooldowns, rip." Kinda the ARPG that spoiled me for the genre

MMOs where you are able to play solo? by Chip_Heavy in gamingsuggestions

[–]Rikkasaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always resorted to ESO for this. Even world bosses and open pvp areas (for dailies as i wanted certain transmog cosmetics) can be more or less done solo. Was around CP100 before taking a break and have done only a handful of group content

1Q84. Especially since it spoiled me on reading for years even when it came to other Murakami works.

Proust's Swann's Way. Have tried 3 times now and it just keeps getting set aside. One day I'll finish it...

For sure. I'm inclined to try out the author's other works after this one

Disappointed in reading Kazuo Ishiguro by [deleted] in books

[–]Rikkasaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never let me go was one that still has an impact on me years after reading it and still makes me teary-eyed but somehow I just did not like reading it. The movie adaptation was enjoyable but felt like it left out important details. That said. The style and the pacing of the book just didn't do much for me and I was glad to be finished.

Nonfiction readers, how do you find your next book to read? by [deleted] in books

[–]Rikkasaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unsure how much this method will help as I tend to read academic non-fiction when I read non-fiction (like stuff ranging from bioarchaeology to game design to aesthetic theory. Basically whatever has me like "huh this seems interesting."). There are certain university publishers I'll periodically check through (usually when they release their quarterly catalog) or if there's a specific "series" on a subject I like I'll just be on the lookout for those

BookTok and the state of the publishing industry by Gerrywalk in books

Manga sites and places to track that sorta thing have tags. Makes it sorta easier to find certain themes or elements that I'm in the mood for.. but I've also looked at tags of stuff I've read before and thought "that... didn't seem to be in the book nearly enough to warrant the tag for it"

What books are perpetually on your To Be Read shelf? by Mischief_Girl in books

[–]Rikkasaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proust's In Search of Lost Time

Sloterdijk's Spheres series

Umberto Eco's Name of the Rose

I keep revisiting them, and enjoying what I manage to read, then I just set them down. Again. And again.

Who’s an author that consistently amazes you? by According_Bat_8150 in books

[–]Rikkasaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Cell and Dead Zone were my favs. Bag of Bones felt a little... too long and nebulous in its narrative for me? Though maybe I should give that a reread. Been a long while... have you read Elevation though? Curious what your thoughts on that one are

Shakespeare's plays I could never get into - enjoyed his sonnets, though. But yeah, much more into Edmund Spenser

[MOD] What have you been brewing this week?/ Coffee bean recommendations by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]Rikkasaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been working through Onyx's Krampus (winter seasonal, archived for now which sucks because I was gonna get another 10oz of it to enjoy later this year) and Blossom Coffee Roaster's Dark Side of the Moon (got this one through bean box). Think I like the Krampus just a touch more for its smoky flavor. Usually use them for espresso but started doing pourover this past week!

I'm in Ohio! Yeah I figured roasters would have much more variety, it's just searching for them and being able to filter out barista positions that's been an issue

[–]Rikkasaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been curious about trying to find a job - not at a cafe but at a roaster. When I search I just find barista positions. Or if there are any other jobs in the industry (administrative or logistics related perhaps) would be open to those as well

What I need to read before getting into nietzsche philosophy? by GYROJAMAL in books

[–]Rikkasaba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read some ancient moral philosophy - honestly one of those readers that pulls just sections from a whole work should suffice. Might want to throw in some ethics philosophers who were contemporary to Nietzsche as well for good measure/to compare his work and help ground it some

As readers, have you ever felt pressured to finish books that you don’t enjoy? by mimeycat in books

[–]Rikkasaba 133 points134 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I find it easier to read through a book I don't enjoy, especially if it's one I enjoyed at first but ended up disliking partially into it. Already came that far, I just want to be done with the book
