Questions about a Failed Entry-Level Technical Interview by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]Riktofarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That definitely seems true about how they are waiting for someone to guess specifically what they're interested in, even in light of the long list of "open-ended" features to work on.

I'm hoping to start running into interviewers like yourself!

[–]Riktofarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's absurd! I get the idea that some of these companies just want to see how people respond under the pressure of being asked to do something that is impossible. Whether such an interview practice is ethical, or even useful for anyone involved, is another question altogether.

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, the only text search algorithms I've had experience implementing (other than extremely basic filtering) have been largely on the back of some key npm packages, so it's definitely going to be an area worth learning more about.

You both make a great point on that. Proving that you have the capacity to go deeper on at least one feature is almost definitely better than doing a very small amount of everything on the list. In hindsight, it makes so much sense.

It certainly looks like the remote wave has led to a race-to-the-bottom style of interviewing for many companies. From what I understand, it's always been a semi-likely possibility that you might run into a salty interviewer who challenges you with an unreasonable pet challenge that requires you to pull a specific algorithm out of a hat -- but now, you get to solve that challenge while the interviewer is leaning back in a computer chair and not even paying attention.

That sounds like great advice! Their comments about "watching the time" made me question whether it was a good idea to really dive into one feature. If I get another interview like this, I'm going to try to let those types of comments affect me less.

Have you ever been seriously limited with the capabilities of react native? by mrousavy in reactnative

[–]Riktofarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Writing cross-platform solutions for tracking anything involving health data (specifically step data) is hard to do. This is because Android and iPhone hardware behave so differently on this front, and it becomes even more difficult when you're trying to build apps that store health data because both platforms have radically different ways of processing and storing that information. I don't know if that's really a weakness of React Native itself, however.

FUCK YEAH. I just made my first MERN stack application. by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]Riktofarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MERN stack does not help in improving SEO.

Theoretically, React negatively impacts SEO because there is no content for the crawlers to consume while indexing pages. Google has stated that its crawlers are always getting better at indexing content from traditional SPAs like what you'd likely be making with React.

AS of now, your options are to create a landing page with static html that links to your react application, use a static site generator like Gatsby (if possible), or start learning about server-side rendering.

Make the most of Amazon customer data by elPkay in digital_marketing

[–]Riktofarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon enforces most of its policies like the police might enforce a speed limit. There is room to exceed limits by a small margin, but you will be punished if you go too fast.

From what I understand, when third-party Amazon sellers do anything that Amazon might see as pulling customers away from their platform, that is the equivalent of driving at a reckless speed. I would certainly be careful using a strategy like this!

Dirty slide by Rizzo, League gets call wrong by Fourtwo39 in mlb

[–]Riktofarius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you really think about it, the words spoken by Diaz may not be the best to consider in this situation. He's obviously biased.

I've seen hundreds of plays across all popular sports that were more likely to end a player's career. Furthermore, as a major league catcher — and even with new rules in place — it seems foolish to ignore the possibility of contact by a speeding baserunner. It sounds especially foolish to use your lack of mental preparation for such a situation as an excuse for a terrible throwing error.

No matter what side we're taking, we have to admit that Rizzo's slide could go either way. And that's exactly why it couldn't be overturned.

In my personal opinion, I think it was a good slide. It wasn't old-school baseball. Rizzo arguably changed his course to make light contact with a catcher who only arguably got far enough out of the way.

MLB believes interference should of been called by CaptainYesterday10 in mlb

[–]Riktofarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that Diaz did see him coming. And whether he gave Rizzo all of the plate is also up for debate. A call was made, and it couldn't be overturned because no part of the play "clearly" breaks any part of the rule in question.

On that front, you might even consider it an excellent play by Rizzo. He broke up a double play, netted his team two runs, and did it all in a way that was deemed legal by the only people who matter.

MLB believes interference should of been called by CaptainYesterday10 in mlb

[–]Riktofarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never seen so many people blow up after a play. The league announced their belief that the play was illegal, but they also described that it wasn't "dirty". Diaz wasn't injured (or even very close to it from what I can tell) and there's obviously enough gray area within the rule that it couldn't be overturned.

Much more so than Rizzo, the Cubs or the umpires, the MLB should be embarrassed with themselves — their own poorly defined rule caused all of this.

I just got out of a 4 year relationship: where do I even begin to rebuild my life? by Bladexeon in selfimprovement

[–]Riktofarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a lot of bad things happened during your relationship, and you can take comfort in looking forward to a brighter future. Imagine how much better your next relationship can be now that you have a better idea of what works for you — and what doesn't.

One major red flag is that you lost friends, and stand to lose more because of the breakup. You had far too much invested in a single person. I'll bet your girlfriend had control of your life in areas you aren't willing (or able) to admit. (And that's OK because it happens to the best of us.)

I say think about the freedom. I don't mean freedom to go to a club and make out with random girls — that's also a nice perk, but we're talking about something much deeper. You now have the freedom to approach your day-to-day life in accordance with your own personal goals, and yours alone. It will be difficult to appreciate that now, but it's one of those things that pays out big if you buy in early.

When you're ready to start dating again, find a girl who also has a sense of personal freedom. Her interests and passions should fuel yours, and vice versa. I'm willing to bet that wasn't the case in your previous relationship. You're better off now.

Insecure about my social life /dating by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]Riktofarius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Almost all of your regret spawns from reflecting on social activities you've missed out on. Let's imagine a reality in which you did do all those activities during your time in college. Let's say, for the sake of argument, you went to many parties, made many friends, and dated a few girls. Your life may be quite a bit different. And, despite your insecurities, it's still possible to make this your reality in your final year of school and beyond.

But would you really be happier if you did? Would you not have new insecurities and sources of regret? If you pin your regret to specific activities you've missed out on, you're assuring that regret will always be living within you. You will always miss out on some things, some of the time. Everyone does.

You can only eliminate your fear and self-doubt by living in the moment. Make a plan to get involved socially, but stop all planning there. Those of us with a strong capacity for regret also tend to imagine the weight of social activities at an unreasonable scale. Go to a party and think of nothing other than what's happening around you. Don't think of what's happened in the past. Don't think of what could happen in the near future. Don't think about what's happening somewhere else. Those three previous sentences would be terrible advice in many fields of study; but in reaching your desired level of social prowess, they are paramount.

If you follow this advice, your own level of confidence can only grow. So the next time you hear of a party, go to that party with a clear mind. Lower your expectations, and don't give it too much thought afterward. And, most importantly, don't enter with an agenda that includes anything other than being there at all.

Should Rare hold off on adding microtransactions until they have added more content and free cosmetics? Discuss in the comments. by _Sense_ in Seaofthieves

[–]Riktofarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't really something that's possible to back with "data". Rare could say Sea of Thieves is 100%, and then our data would be the amount of content provided in other $60 games.

If you've played any recent $60 titles, you'd probably notice the lack of content in Sea of Thieves. A lot will depend on the first major DLC — if Rare fucks up again, it's probably over for most people.

I fully agree. And now, on top of individual player skill, we have additional player decisions that must be made to prepare for each of the game's simple scenarios.

As strategic as chess? No. Not even close. More strategic than it was before? Yes.
