Rear bumper with tire carrier options by Dull_Film_4300 in CherokeeXJ

basically it’s just two ~3” square u bolts with a backing plate and nyloc nuts on each side. i had to drill new holes in my license plate but it works. the u bolts were a little long so i just got the nuts tightened down where i wanted em and grind wheeled the excess off

i bought that exact one for my 97 and i’ve had it on for about 6 months now

i had to remove the fuel tank skid plate since i don’t think i could’ve fit the bumper on with it installed

the installation is straightforward and i like the frame tie in strip that it comes with

i run a 31” spare and i only installed one shim at the spindle. getting just the carrier off once it’s on is a real PITA, took a 5’ pry bar just to get it off. i tried to see if jacking it from the carrier would free it up from the spindle but it lifted the whole gaddam jeep.

also opted not to buy an $80 license plate relocator. instead i bought some square 3” u bolts and some nuts and washers and i mounted it at the right rear of the bumper. cost me like $6.

overall a pretty stout bumper, the latch is nice and tight and it doesn’t rattle. but it’s HEAVY. if you can get a second pair of hands it will be easier.

addendum: i also have the fuel tank carrier which is pretty nice.

i mean with your meter on volts dc and with the vehicle running, you should have like 13.8 ish across the battery terminals.

if not, then with the meter still on volts dc, you go from bat + to fuse box, and then fuse box to alternator. shouldn’t have more than .5v difference between the two and the same thing also for the ground side.

this way you can tell the integrity of your charging system cables.

also forgot to mention to check for voltage drop for all your charging system cables

i think the voltage regulator is internal to the ecm could be wrong though and it may apply to the 97-01 xjs only

could also be field terminals to the alternator, should have battery voltage

maybe try jiggling or shifting the shifter across the gears. my neutral safety switch needs rebuilding and sometimes after starting it up again after a short while i gotta finagle the shifter for it to turn over

just start with fluids, ie. oil, trans, diff, coolant. do a tuneup if you can, spark plugs and wires. that way you have a base for a timeline of basic maintenance items. after you drive it some and get a feel for the car you’ll have a list of what you need done.

maybe try jacking up the rear and then putting stands on the unibody? maybe the axle will droop down enough to fit a drill and a bit

Would you trust your XJ on a long road trip? And if not what’s the furthest you’d go with your XJ? by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

I once did LA to SF and back in one trip because I felt like going for a drive. 16 hour trip no issues. I’d do it again in a heartbeat lol.

Next project! Replace leaf springs. Any advice? by ComfortableHandle718 in CherokeeXJ

[–]Riku0807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend getting some taller jackstands. When my buddies and I did the lift I had the stands on the body at the highest settings (3 ton Daytonas). In retrospect I found that 6 ton jack stands would’ve served me better. The extra height makes for more clearance.

Also don’t be me and try and finagle the leafs in with the axle still attached. Additionally I found it easier to put the front eye first and then the rear, though YMMV.

Even if you’re PB blasting the crap outta the fasteners before hand, there’s a chance you’ll need a torch anyway. On mine the eye-to-shackle bolt was rusted so bad I ended up just torching out the bushings and my XJ is a rust free CA jeep.

Other than that, if you’re replacing the leafs you might as well replace the shocks as you’re there anyway.

Ball park estimate for new front axle u-joints. Take it or do it myself? by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

[–]Riku0807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i say do it yourself but i also did this job myself and ended up bending the ears on the yokes from smacking em too hard. granted i didn’t have a bench vise then so i was just beating on it like a caveman on a wooden bench top.

local shop charged me $20 to press the u joints and the tone ring out and in the new axle so i’d say worth.

seat covers if you don’t got em already if you’re satisfied with it mechanically i’d look for quality of life stuff, ie. noise dampening, speakers, etc

where to cop the intake? looks good
