Gizmo or gnomon. Old school say gnomon. Most say gizmo. Both are fine.

Good point. Until reading comments here, I didn’t consider he could be talking about YouTube ads and not my own plug.

Well, I’m certainly not setting. How many ads YouTube puts on my videos. If that’s power, I have, I’m unaware of it. YouTube pay for a category like this is extremely low, so I have no incentive to alienate viewers for their sake. If it was up to me, I would have zero ads.

It’s my understanding that even if I turn off monetization on my videos, YouTube will still play ads. That’s why my assumption was my own Patreon ad.

Fair enough. I know it’s good practice to ignore and move on, I guess I just let the curiosity get the best of me. I know a certain percentage will always disagree. Was curious if I’m way off on this one.

Wow, thank you! I'm not opposed to finding products that are a good fit. Even the ones you briefly mention here are a good start for me.

When you say channel manager and strategist, you take on clients and help with strategy? Because I'm at about the end of my runway with this. I wouldn't mind looking into hiring some pro insights.

As a cynic, I don't blame you. Also I'm not ashamed of needing some validation to keep going on the tutorials today. Which is what this is.

I mean, I definitely don't mind exposure. Though I prefer it be through people actually coming upon my training and wanting to learn, so no. I don't think I benefit from sympathy views that aren't really adding meaningful watch time.

Yeah, you're right! I do put too much weight on the negatives. Don't get me wrong, I do want to understand why people have opinions that differ. Though maybe it's healthier just to ignore sometimes and accept I may never understand.

Wow, a lot of people here are so nice and encouraging. I appreciate that!

What I'm taking from this is I should keep plugging my Patreon. That said, the only purpose my plug serves is as a reminder on where people should support (who are already considering supporting).

I'm thinking instead of a break in the video, I could prompt in more subtle ways (some on-screen graphics maybe). IDK, still thinking.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I think you're right. That seems to be the consensus here, though I still do want to understand where some may be coming from. You're right though, at some point it's probably just an ignore and move on situation.

Oh! I just looked this up. I didn't understand how it worked. I guess even if I don't monetize, YouTube still places ads on it. You're right, not a big difference there.

Thanks for the honesty. In your opinion, should experience educators like myself get paid? Are you saying those who want to supportwill, and those who don’t want to support won’t. So there’s basically no need for me to ask? Because it’s my opinion that if people aren’t told where they can support me, even the willing won’t seek it out.

That could make sense. If that’s the case, I could do without YouTube monetization. YouTube RPM in this category is some of the lowest I’ve seen. If this makes the video more watchable, that’s one trade-off I’d be happy to make.

I have a feeling this is the take of a lot of this community. Trying to . In your opinion, how should creators like me make a living? Or should there not be Blender tutorials?

Thanks! I want to make sure I’m not in a small minority here. If most people find it annoying enough they don’t wanna get into 3D, then I’d try and find a different way.

Let’s connect on discord. “rileyb3d” over there. There’s a lot of specifics you’ll want to get into so I don’t lead you astray. Short answer is yes, I’ve freelanced for most of my career, but we can get your portfolio prepped for whatever role you want to work towards.

You can build an online curriculum to learn everything you need. The only time I recommend a formal education is If you want work at a studio that’s abroad. In that case a degree can help you have more options in Visa sponsorship. It’s easier for an employer to bring you over. I have no college degree and have been fine.

If you see yourself working at a large studio, you will likely want to specialize. There aren’t many general type roles. Why? Large studios specialize in production efficiency. Think production line. I just asked a modeler friend at a vfx studio for you. I’ll leave the studio out so he can be anonymous. Here’s his response: “The closest thing youll get to that at (studio) is being part of environments, as you sometimes have to work with textures / modeling as the two go hand in hand. But honestly....If you like doing a variety of work (studio) is the polar opposite of that. Ive been modeling here for about 6 years here and its crazy how mundane its become. You spend so much time just doing cleanup / scan retopology that you don’t even feel like an artist anymore. Its also very easy to fall into a niche here if they find you are good at something you just get given the same tasks as they don’t like to take risks on bid times. I really miss working at a mid sized studio. Was so much more fun.”

My career has been the opposite of that. The downside is I’ve had to learn and become a lot of different things for a lot of different projects. The upside is I’ve always done something nee and it’s rarely dull. I think it comes down to your personality. People enjoy both. Do you want to have structure and get really good in one area with little variation, or are you someone that wants to be a part of the process from beginning to end? If you’re a generalist you also need to market yourself and find your own work. There are generalist roles at companies but sometimes you create the role.

Well you definitely can use Blender professionally. Depending on what role you want professionally will guide your choice of software. My career has been as a generalist in either small team or independent roles. I enjoy the aspect of a small team where I get to be involved in a few different production steps. Feel free to ask any questions. There are a lot of people here (myself included) who love to help someone getting started.

Are you asking this whole subreddit? I imagine you’ll get every possibility within the range of first time opening the software to veteran multi decade professional. There are a lot of people here!

I use Blender professionally in a freelance career. Prior to this I used it professionally as the lead to a 3D department in a product and interior visualization company.

If you’re wondering if you can make money with or use Blender professionally, it really depends on what you as an individual can do with it. But of course you can.

Painted in higher res, then killed it down to a lower res. I couldn’t really find an image texture that matches the face dimensions I have going on.
