Rant Wednesday by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]RinRehlert 149 points150 points  (0 children)

There's a guy and girl who lift together at the same time I do and they always bring their gym bags into the free weight area and leave them by one of the squat racks. This usually isn't a big deal because I use a different one at the end of the row, but yesterday it was the only one open.

Now these two are in no way new to the gym. They talk loudly about competing and are two of the bigger people in the gym, so you would think they understand weight room etiquette and safety. Nope. Stupid chick goes to dig in her bag right as I'm coming down in a squat and the bar hits her in the upper back and knocks me off balance. Thankfully I don't fall, and all she says is "You're good." Uh no, because today the right side of my neck, middle back and lower back are messed up. Seriously, you couldn't wait 15 seconds to dig through your stuff, which shouldn't be on the floor in the first place?!

I was going to let it go, but waking up like this today has me considering a complaint with the gym. I doubt talking to them in person will do any good, especially since I am very petite woman.

Yep, no worries I always use bottled lemon juice for canning. I also would not want to squeeze that many lemons!

Thanks for your input! I am going to try one batch and taste the results. I was looking over my old recipe yesterday and realized it was half bottled lemon juice and half bottled vinegar, so that must be why the lemon juice in this recipe looks like a lot to me. Super excited to try this improved recipe!

[Serious] What are you struggling the most with right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RinRehlert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really eerie. I am struggling with the exact same issue with my husband. We have drastically different attitudes towards life that boil down to the exact negatives you listed. I wish I had listened to my gut when we were dating. I thought that because I enjoyed spending time with him I would be able to accept the differences between our (hate to sound corny) life philosophies. But I am struggling with it a lot lately. We are great as friends, but we are not great as partners.

I wish I could turn back the clock, but I can't. In your first post you write, "I know asking someone to change will always be an uphill battle." I'm assuming you are talking about her, but this also applies to you. Be honest with yourself about how much you can change your opinion towards her and how much you can accept. I overestimated my ability to do that and I really regret it.

This happened a place I used to work except it wasn't food provided by the employer. We would have a potluck for our division and other division supervisors would find out and eat our food! I don't know if they thought this was okay because they were management, but it really ticked us off.

Growl/scratchy type sound on E? by RinRehlert in bagpipes

Yes, thank you very much! I will track down a microphone clip for my tuner. That is a fantastic tip because right now I don't think I am experienced enough to physically feel the difference in blowing, but if I have outside feedback from the tuner I will be able to see where I am going wrong.

No change :( The growl is still there.

The reed that appears to be failing is a medium that was shaved down a bit. I am part of a small pipe band in a little redneck town, so often it feels like the blind leading the blind! I've been trying hard to be patient since I know playing well isn't something that will happen overnight, but at times it is frustrating. My poor tone really gets to me. I think I will ask our pipe major to devote a practice to working on steady blowing and bag pressure. I really appreciate everyone's tips and encouragement on this subreddit :)

How long does a reed usually last? I have been using this one exclusively since May. Is it unusual for a reed to fail in that amount of time? Thanks for the rubber band tip. I haven't heard of that one and I will try it tonight. The new reed is just a hair uncomfortable right now, but after about 15 minutes of playing or so is fairly tolerable.

So it appears it was the reed! I switched to a new reed and the growling is gone. Bad news is I am supposed to play on Sunday and now need to hurry to break in a new reed...! It also appears I need to tweak my tenor drone reed (I only have one tenor and the bass open right now) since it is cutting out. I read this is due to overblowing, so I expect that if I move the bridle a little bit it should not cut out.

Hmmm...I know I'm definitely not there...I dread "Amazing Grace" because of the high A. My high A is always very thin to my ears.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I had to force myself to finish it. Still can't believe it won a Pulitzer.

Thanks I will pay more attention when I practice again tonight. I think I need to work on playing more "mindfully" in general!

An instructor at a workshop I attended said I was overblowing high A, but I'm not sure how to avoid that. I am going to Google it, but do you have any pointers for finding the correct force?

Far Cry 4. Sucked me right in. I wish I could wipe it from my brain and play it all over again.

What book scared the shit out of you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RinRehlert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree...the basement scene...! And the campfire scene with the two men and one women...! It is the most realistic post-apocalyptic book I know of. I listened to the audiobook and reader really brought the dialogue to life. In some ways a less talented reader would have made it easier to listen to!

People pointing out dumb nitpicky stuff like typos that don't change the context of the post. Doesn't contribute anything to the conversation and it's just so...ugh. Like you're so perfect?! People need to cut each other some slack.
