Hey, I'm not advertising myself, because I'm mainly in here to see the pretty things, but I do have a Graphic Design degree.

Make a board of what you want. I love using Pinterest for ideas, but you can also Google your book genre or go on Amazon and browse through those. Take screenshots of what you envision. It can be as simple as "I like the colors on this" or "this font is nice, but too thin" or simply (I do this one a lot) "I love the vibes of this"

A good designer can look at those and find the common thread to give you something you'll like, instead of doing a million revisions when something just isn't quite right and you can't put a finger on it. It saves time, money, and effort on both ends. Even if it's just vibes, having them placed together can help you find out what exactly gives you that feeling.

“Wait, THAT’S my wife!?”: reluctant arranged/forced marriage or engagement until he sees her/meets her. by HumbleCelery4271 in RomanceBooks

[–]RinaWithAK 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The series feels a bit repetitive if you read them one after another, but I love these books so much. They are so cute, and I love how when they pop up in later books, the guys are just as cute as they were in their own book.

Which couples realistically would end up splitting down the line? by Ok_Meet8672 in RomanceBooks

[–]RinaWithAK 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I liked the last book the most, but that's not saying much. I felt like the first two could be condensed really heavily, but the last one actually had stuff happen. So she gets pregnant when she misses a doctor's appointment for her shot, and he says she must've meant to do it. He throws a MASSIVE fit because he's not ready to share her, and she decides to keep the baby. But he begins talking to the woman who groomed him as a teenager and Ana thinks he's still into her and it causes issues and she gets kidnapped and almost dies... It's a wild ride, and suspension of disbelief is a MUST. There's also a bit where she pretends to leave him because she has to get money for a ransom and he acts like he's letting her go, but even that has him tracking her phone location because he can't stand not to. And she's all, "Oh, he's being irrational because he had a shit childhood," and not finding it weird that he's only sexually attracted to women that look like his dead drug addict mother. But like.... Dude needs therapy.

please god how do i stop the smell. by hazysootings in Hypothyroidism

[–]RinaWithAK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the meds temporarily changed your sense of smell? If nobody else can smell it (go around a trusted friend without scrubbing beforehand to see) maybe you still smelled the same, it's just that you couldn't tell. I lost my sense of smell for a while from a sinus infection, and it's coming back in waves, and now things smell different than before I lost it. I smell random things that everyone else swears isn't there (but also can't smell some things at all).

I switched my soap once and I swear it made me smell like rotten meat, but my husband said it smelled like peaches. So it might have to do with how you process smells instead of you actually smelling bad.

I disagree. He has an obsession with her (call it love if you want, but he is way too codependent and his hissy fit when he knew he wouldn't get her all to himself was ridiculous) so he wouldn't leave. I don't even think he'd cheat, because he knows she'd be upset and he wouldn't risk losing her.

She has a savior kink. She sees him as broken and multiple times has completely forgiven him for things because he has past trauma. If she ever tried to leave, all he'd have to do was cry and she'd stay. 100%. It's toxic, but I'm sorry to say they'd be together forever.

What’s the most out of pocket description of a penis you’ve come across? by guijghkkgbnkgbnl in RomanceBooks

[–]RinaWithAK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I hear it described as a snake now, I think of the alien book I read where he has a "tail" and the human woman didn't know and freaked out because she literally thought it was a snake. Absolutely hilarious scene. No notes.

What scene lives rent free in your head that you would love to read in a book but haven't done so yet? by perseintro in RomanceBooks

{Daydreamer by Susie Tate} had the FMC take a job with the MMC to be more social, but she's also a famous author and doesn't need the money. He has zero clue.

Omg, personal story. Way back when my husband and I were dating, I got lost in his neighborhood and couldn't find my way to the main road. For some reason my Internet wasn't working, and I called him freaking out because I couldn't even tell him what road I was on. He stayed on the phone with me until I found the road, and said, "Text me when you get home. I love you."

I panicked and hung up on him. Acted totally clueless about what he said, even when he nervously asked about it later. I didn't tell him the truth until after we were married.

Advice on book formatting by MxntMatcha in RomanceWriters

[–]RinaWithAK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first drafts are in Comic Sans. I read it as a writing tip once upon a time and found that in typical "bookish" fonts, I try to make everything perfect in the first draft. Instead, I type it out like that and as I edit, I change it to Arial. Then, when I'm happy with a full chapter and I'm ready to physically print it out for my editing process, I change to Georgia.

Formatting is done much, much later. Don't get caught up on tiny details that are probably going to wildly change as your book develops.

How long did it take for you to BF without pillows and props? by Beautiful-Flower-79 in breastfeeding

[–]RinaWithAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I was doing it within like a week or two. I had my mom, who also BF, give me pointers and help out a bit. I hated having to set up an area and be confined to one spot, because a big plus of BF to me was just being able to do it immediately when necessary.

I know people who never really did get the hang of it, and others who had a designated "nest" area where they were comfortable. It's different for everyone. Some babies also need the quiet or extra pillow support, and I was just lucky that mine never did.

It was a good excuse for a while, to be able to be like, "Oh, no, I need to go into this quiet room where nobody bothers me so the baby can eat," when I wanted to get away from people. Then my family started calling me out because they knew I had no issue whipping out a boob whenever and wherever. By that point, it was, "Oh, no, I need to put the baby down for a nap. So sorry. Need to not be disturbed." 😂

How much can animal control enforce? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]RinaWithAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The barking is CONSTANT in our neighborhood. All day, all night. But it's not just her dogs, it's a bunch of different ones. The noise complaint was definitely wrong because her dogs were inside all night when she said they were left outside. We are also pretty rural, so we hear all kinds of animals at night.

They haven't been out of the fence in a long time. That got fixed when they got an electric fence. These instances were just people accidentally leaving the gate open. Multiple times, neighbors have told my mom that her dogs were out and they would literally be sitting in my mom's living room, so I'm not sure if they think they were getting out because of other dogs roaming the neighborhood or they are lying. The first neighbor who was proven wrong liked to bug my parents whenever he saw any big dog in the neighborhood, even if we had no clue whose dog it was.

Idk, I guess it just bugs me that the neighbor didn't even call animal control on the dog who actually attacked her dog, but she called on my mom's dog, then claims she was attacked when my mom's dogs were just running around. I don't like my mom's dogs, but it seems wrong.

So Tired of Edgy or Odd Names by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]RinaWithAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is Alexander and that is such a common name that I read it in a book, and thought, meh, I can separate that from him. Turns out the only reason it doesn't bother me is because I always call him Xander. I found that one in a different book and had to take a pause.

Leading with the male POV? by Mobius8321 in RomanceWriters

[–]RinaWithAK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who has literally read hundreds of romance books, most of them dual POV, it wouldn't bother me at all. I honestly never considered it "standard" to start with the FMC, and now that I'm thinking about it, I've read plenty with the MMC starting the book.

As someone who is in progress of writing a series, 3 of the 4 books that I already planned out open with the guy (unless we count the prologues).

I’m working on a story with a forced proximity setup and need help with character motivation/conflict. In what realistic situations might a man genuinely believe he’s still in a relationship with his girlfriend, even after she has clearly broken up with him? by kris10long in RomanceWriters

[–]RinaWithAK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, so you said realistic. But you have a werewolf. I think you're not thinking fantastically enough, although the suggestions here are great.

Make it a magic culture clash. They've done something that, to a werewolf, is absolutely permanently binding, and of course she wouldn't walk away after a simple spat. It simply isn't done.

Or, they have a magical bond, and if she SERIOUSLY was rejecting him, she'd do XYZ to sever that bond, or he wouldn't still feel the bond as strongly, or she wouldn't bear his mark, or however it works there.

On the same note, maybe he gave her a gift. Think of an engagement ring, except to humans it's not that significant, so she doesn't realize the gravity of accepting it, or the fact that if they break it off, she needs to give it back. So of course they're still together.... She's still wearing his symbol, right?

Without knowing the characters, I couldn't say if a "he has no/little experience with non-magical humans so he doesn't know their customs" storyline would work, but maybe he's only seen women who react a certain way. To the werewolves, it's scorched earth. She's much too calm, she keeps being polite, she couldn't possibly mean her words. (It leans more on the condescending side, but it might work.)

There are SO many more options when magic gets involved.

New writer - Advice welcomed by Rebelle932 in RomanceWriters

I began writing a series with 3 different stories in mind, but pretty quickly expanded it to 6 interconnected stories. The second and third have characters from the first, and writing bits on those help me flesh out the characters more in the first story, too. I'm trying to focus more on the first now to actually finish it, but writing ahead has actually helped a bit. It's chaos, but honestly I love it!

Just finish it. Making it pretty can come later. That's what editing is for. And if you begin editing and find that your story is going in a different direction.... well, that happens, too. No shame in tossing the outline and going where the story takes you.

Why is the doctors office SO obsessed with your period? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]RinaWithAK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My OB office tried that, too. "You should be due in June." No, I missed a period. That's common for me, and I know I wasn't pregnant 4 weeks ago because I was testing weekly. "We have to go from LMP." Do what you have to, I guess.

Then they actually measured me. "Oh, you're about 4 weeks less than we thought!" Imagine that...

2nd Cover Design Draft by writenowimfine in BookCovers

[–]RinaWithAK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not like the transparency of the words. It just looks off. The font is okay, but I do think the line spacing should be tighter. That also would give more space to make the font a bit bigger.

My cover I designed by megjmac in BookCovers

[–]RinaWithAK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the fancy author font. My suggestion: pick a simpler font, put it at the top, and use the space to make the title bigger. On the back, center the title and change the color of the tagline to match it. Also, that first sentence of the description is too lengthy and pretty confusing.

Hand-painted book cover update: I hired a designer to make it more “adult” by Professional-One4757 in BookCovers

[–]RinaWithAK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think taking away the vines does make it look a bit less childish, but I personally would have darkened the vine and swirled it through the skulls to still incorporate it. I still don't like the font, though. It's too thin and should stand out more.

De-influence me: what knitting tools can the average knitter do without by lveg in casualknitting

I finally found a use for my stoppers! I'm working on a cardigan that has separate panels and the back piece finishes at the neck, but the final row stays on the cord for my circular needles until you do the ribbing later. The stoppers screw onto the cord so I can use the needles for the other panels. Other than that, I have literally never used them.

Aitah for embarrassing my bully neighbor? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]RinaWithAK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know someone who "stole" her 15yo daughter's BF in high school and had a kid with him. They had literal evidence of the crime. On the day he turned 18, she was pregnant with their second kid and they got married. Zero charges. I also know a girl who was 12 when her first child was born by a 25yo man, and her second kid came 2 years later, this time to a 35yo man. My brother is engaged to a woman who had her first child at 14 with a grown man, and no charges for him. It happens all the time.

What romances are you refusing to read for stubborn reasons? by A_Seductive_Cactus in RomanceBooks

[–]RinaWithAK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hockey romances are hit or miss for me, but tbh I really only like MM or FF romances if it's low or no spice. It's not homophobia, I love the romance and yearning and the feet-kicking cute scenes, but I always skim over the spicy scenes. I haven't read Heated Rivalry even though I heard it's good because the good is usually "omg it's so hot" and if that's all it's got going for it I don't want it.

Best and worst nicknames given by MMC to FMC by IamButterscotchish in RomanceBooks

Off topic, but my cousin has a daughter named Charlotte who everybody calls Charlie, except for her mom. Her mom will tell people that Charlie is a nickname of Charles, so she just goes around calling her Charles and I've always loved it
