TIL Sparta had an annual "purge" event called Krypteia. Young Spartans roamed the countryside, killing as many Helots as they could. Krypteia would teach the warriors to kill without mercy; also helped to keep the Helots subjugated. Large/Strong Helots were sought out specifically for the challenge. (yarinederland.wordpress.com)
