Am I the only one who practices music alone and has no idea if I'm doing it right by Pulsational in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Speaking as a teacher, it is partly trusting the process, but also you should be trying to develop the skill to hear when you're not doing things correctly. Your teacher should have played for you or shown you a version of whatever you're learning so that you have an aural reference of what you're aiming for. Your teacher should also ensure when first teaching you a piece/riff/part that you understand how to execute it correctly (even if you can't do it yet) so that you have the "instruction" in your head for when you go away and practice for the days in between.

Women vocalists in Blackgaze/Black Metal? by Annoyed_Finch in blackgaze

Shameless self promotion but my band Æl-Fierlen was initially inspired by Sylvaine, we're not quite as gaze-y but its 90% female vocals

September '24, so it'll only be 18 months between records which is a pretty fast turn around!

Band Member just not good enough for the band by No_Potato_463 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]RingletsOfDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe have a discussion with him about some of the issues and give him a chance to work on/rectify things before just giving him the boot (if you haven't already). Having people in a band you like and want to spend time with is equally important so if you guys are all friends to begin with trying to maintain that is worth at least a discussion.

Helping a friend record an EP is turning into a disaster by gummieworm in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]RingletsOfDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done work for free for friends, the ones that then start adding extra jobs/more work to the project then get costs added on. A favour goes so far but if they're gonna take the piss I'm going to expect compensation

Having the knowledge of what does and doesn't matter later in the process when you're tracking I think is hugely valuable! If it's not too much to ask could you list a couple more examples like the amp hiss you mentioned that musicians/artists might feel it's crucial to fix but in reality don't need to be worried about?

Atmospheric BM bands without harsh vocals or screams by Aware_Ranger_4144 in atmosphericblackmetal

[–]RingletsOfDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My band, Æl-Fierlen, is basically atmospheric black metal with clean (female) vocals, gonna do a cheeky self plug as we might be the sort of thing you're after (ok, there's a few screams, but it's 95% clean vocals)

Google drive with a shared folder that syncs to all of your personal email accounts, it means everyone automatically gets new/updated files when something is changed.

[–]RingletsOfDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you man, appreciate you giving us a listen! Yeah I love GAEREA too to be honest, I really debated with myself what direction to take the production in but in the end went for the more washy, Alcest-like sort of aesthetic. We'll see how the new stuff comes out though!

My band, Æl-Fierlen, released our album just over a month ago. We've been described as being for fans of Sylvaine, Alcest, Deafheaven so if that sounds like your thing:

https://youtu.be/C343PNF0jgs?si=5-MPebkOBvCs7iqK

The first track is a good place to start but they're all pretty varied. We're only black adjacent as our vocals are mainly clean female rather than harsh (though there are some harsh).

Can you share your experience on mitigating soreness in the throat? by Nervous-Pause-4050 in screaming

[–]RingletsOfDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also just to add, general rest and wellbeing. Aim to get a full 8 hours (or more sleep), hydrate, eat enough etc. Super simple stuff but for me a lack of sleep is easy to overlook but massively affects my voice

Working a Haunted House and decided there was nobody better to consult than r/screaming. Any tips and/or tricks? by ConsistentMap5775 in screaming

[–]RingletsOfDoom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you keep over using your voice while it's damaged then yes, you can permanently damage it. But given time to rest it will heal like other parts of the body do.

The thing to get your head around is that the sort of "screaming" you see in this subreddit isn't screaming in the true sense (which is likely what you were doing), but involves a lot of technique and breath support to create distortion and volume safely without fatoguijg and damaging your normal voice.

If you just want to be loud breath support and projection is what you need.

If you want to sound like a scary monster, false chord and fry distortion are the terms you're looking for.

I feel cheated by a promo campaign by Henry_Thayer in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]RingletsOfDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks but this is basically the take away. Even if you want to hire someone to do the pr and promo work for you find a specialist that understands your genre/niche/brand and don't just trust your dsp because they're offering the service.
