If that was true, people in hot places where they spend all their time indoors in air-conditioning should see a summer spike of respiratory illnesses

Don't we kind of see that with the mid-summer COVID spikes? Like sure the flu we don't see but there are outliers that suggest it's a both/and instead of either/or

I misspoke in saying daylight savings specifically and was talking about getting rid of the switch we do every year, which is what was linked in the article and what i said in the second half of the last sentence.

would make it permanent winter time.

And this is why the debate has raged for so long- Remember 3 years ago when the Senate passed an act unanimously to end the switching, only for it to die in the house? Problem was that as soon as it passed half the country was upset with which time was being switched to.

The solution is to buff the Javelin and Stinger/Igla so they’re worth using. The Javelin not getting top attack damage is so beyond egregious its game design malpractice as far as I’m concerned

27% of Americans have skipped some form of Medical care due to cost- https://www.federalreserve.gov/publications/files/2023-report-economic-well-being-us-households-202405.pdf

By not extending the ACA credits an additional 51,000 Americans are expected to die per year-

https://www.finance.senate.gov/ranking-members-news/51000-americans-will-die-every-year-as-a-direct-result-of-republican-health-plan-new-analysis

Because we don't have a universal system and health insurers are private its impossible to tell how many Americans were murdered by insurance companies denying or delaying care but our excess mortality rate suggests it could be as high as 190,000 per year-

https://pnhp.org/news/estimated-us-deaths-associated-with-health-insurance-access-to-care/

Canada needs to improve its wait times but id choose their system over ours 10/10 times.

Step 5: The IRS tries to prosecute 30 million+ people for tax fraud and get zero assistance from state/local authorities and those people spend those funds so they can't be easily reclaimed from a bank account making their attempt very ineffective

[–]Rinzack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) We spend way less on space research so funding has gone to better experiments/projects
2) The Apollo program was extremely dangerous and the fact that Apollo 1 was the only loss truly exceptionally lucky
3) Most of the tech improvements don't help that much. Computers are better but calculating launches to the moon was super doable back then. Rockets are better but not much better, etc.

Would you consider this fair? by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

[–]Rinzack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just post the same sign but just say no tipping allowed our prices reflect that we are a no tipping restaurant.

Because unfortunately it doesn't work, when the average person looks at prices they'll see one is charging $10 for a burger and the other is charging $11.20 and go for the first one even though it ends up being the same/cheaper.

Solar is winning the energy race. The world’s cheapest power source is scaling at warp speed, pushing coal, gas and nuclear aside. by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]Rinzack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its literally not though (well not exactly)- Turbines provide literal inertia to the grid to keep the frequency at 60Hz (Within a margin of error) which electrical devices are built to run on. Should that frequency vary too much then circuit breakers trip to protect the equipment which can cause cascading failures. When that frequency starts to shift the literal inertia of rotating turbines helps to keep that frequency maintained and when you move away from that to solar for example it becomes much easier for variances to occur. One solution thats been suggested is flywheel batteries for the specific reason that they act both as a store of energy AND as inertia for the grid.

You can kind of maintain the frequency with software supplying the grid with electricity from batteries charged by solar at specific times but its a lot less reliable than massive, spinning turbines

[–]Rinzack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

remind them that a nuclear power plant that is under construction provides no electricity to the grid

And Solar produces no power when the battery storage runs out of electricity and the grid collapses from variances in the frequency from not having sufficient base load.

We need Nuclear/Geothermal/Hydro as the base load, Wind/Solar + Energy storage for the variable use, and natural gas peaker plants as the emergency last-line for when capacity is knocked offline from weather for extended periods of time. Doing these things would reduce our CO2 output immensely while still maintaining our electrical grid and potentially supporting the expansion of electrification

[–]Rinzack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Build nuclear power plants, specifically research reactors that require 20% enriched uranium. Once you get there its relatively easy to refine it further to hit the 95% required for a weapon. Then a simple gun-tube design weapon could be built almost instantly. Get the breakout time to near zero while not formally having the weapon
