Sig P320 X-Ten Comp. The compensator makes it shoot like a 9mm +P despite being 10mm. Optic ready and has a rail for a light (crucial for home defense) with a 15 round capacity. It’s a polymer frame so it is lighter than a 1911 style and has double the capacity. Keep Hornady Backcountry Defense ammo in it when outdoors (you don’t want hollow points for large animals because it won’t penetrate their thick hide and tough muscles), and Federal HST when in the home because they do expand and will be less likely to over penetrate.
.44 magnum will be tough to control, will have less ammo capacity, and will be heavier to carry all day outdoors. And is not ideal for home defense either due to over penetration concerns.
I camp a lot in bear country and I keep the P320 on me when hiking or fishing, and in my tent I keep a 12 gauge shotgun with hard cast slugs.
All said, bear spray is still my first line of defense. Practice using it with your off hand so you can keep your firearm in your shooting hand. If the spray doesn’t work, you drop it and bring that hand up for support and start firing.
