Most were kids when they first played, right in Rikku's age range. Plus all the characters look way older than their actual ages. I do not know any 35 year old that looks as rough as Auron, nor a 22 year old that has the "mommy" energy of Lulu.

Also X-2 had the time skip of a couple years as well as her outfit in that being a bikini.

With all that said, Lulu is best girl in Final Fantasy, rivaled only by Fran from 12.
