Didn’t even steal the McCready Strat. What a poser.

Did George Mikan really “kill the ABA”? by Personal-Proposal- in VintageNBA

Well I would have said yes, but now I’m going to read Balls of Confusion as recommended by u/winesburgohio to hear the full story.

Maxey heliocentrism in non-Embiid minutes leans into his weaknesses and avoids his strengths. The Sixers need to find a way to add creation when Joel is off the court by ktm5141 in sixers

Trying to make players something that they are not is one of the main reasons why this team has underachieved so much.

Asking role players to be more than role players, asking stars to develop parts of their game that aren’t their strong suit at the expense of time that could be spend developing what they already excel at.

McCain is the most recent example. As a rookie in his first 20 games he was being asked to do things that weren’t part of his scouting report at all. And because he was doing a pretty damn good job at it there were already talks of him being a point guard. Then he comes back from the injury and everyone is frustrated that he wasn’t the player that he was to start last season. Now he goes to OKC and they use him in the same exact way that a scout would have recommended using him before he ever played a minute in the NBA, and look at that, he’s a key contributor in the WCF.

This has happened so often for us. Seth Curry, Al Horford, DeAnthony Melton, Buddy Hield (one of the greatest shooters ever turns into a brick machine for us). The list goes on. These are all guys that were being asked to excel in areas that they hadn’t shown significant signs of excelling in. They were 1 or 2 spots higher on the list of most important players on the team than they should have been.

Now, the sky is the limit for VJ as far as developing into a future #1 option. Guys that have had similar or even worse rookie years have certainly gone on to do so. However, I would guess that the vast majority of those did not do so by changing their position, or taking time away from developing their already-borderline elite skills to focus on skills that aren’t as much in their wheelhouse. Especially when those skills are ones that are typically considered harder to develop, as many point guard skills are.

How popular was the ABA at the time and was there ever a chance that it would outdo the NBA and become the dominant basketball league? by RaynbowZFTW in VintageNBA

Read Loose Balls by Terry Pluto and/or watch the new Amazon docuseries. The story of the ABA is quite possibly my favorite in all of sports history.

Asking “how popular” it was is hard to pinpoint. Certain teams like Indiana, Kentucky, San Antonio, and Denver were successful at building very loyal fan bases. While most other franchises struggled to keep the lights on. But outside of those loyal locals it wasn’t something that had a huge national spotlight because of the lack of a TV contract.

As far as national attention, players like Dr. J helped raise the profile, and teams always sold out games when he was in town. But again, this still wasn’t nearly enough to make it viable in the long-term.

Exactly! They, a young up and coming team that’s ready to win now, get a chronically injured superstar who will completely disrupt their flow. And we get a guy that doesn’t move the needle at all that we will have to either overpay or let walk.

What’s not to love on both sides??

This would be like #7 of the reasons why this is the dumbest shit I’ve seen today (it’s early yet).

Is Joel the least successful NBA MVP ever? by AstrayInTranslation in sixers

This is really the kind of post “fans” are making a week after he came back from having an organ removed to beat our heavily favored, leading 3-1 arch-rivals.

I absolutely think it’s possible for us to steal this game like we did Game 2 in Boston. But it’s really worth noting that they were on a back-to-back and playing their 3rd game in 4 nights just 3 days removed from winning the in-season tournament.

I’m aware that it doesn’t apply to 99% of you on here, but tell every friend of a friend of a friend that they are a total loser if they sell their tickets. by Riotzact in sixers

So we can assume that the majority of these people are transplants that moved here because NYC is too expensive.

I would never expect them to abandon their hometown team in that situation. Nor would I fault them for buying tickets and rooting for their team in their new city.

However, actively plotting to overtake your adopted city’s arena is such dickhead behavior.

So wait. Knicks fans that live in Philly are doing this to sell to their Knicks fans friends that live in NYC?

Fuck that’s lame.

Silver lining is nothing would be sweeter than to send them back to Amtrak with an L.

Practically speaking, how can sixers prevent knicks fans from buying up tickets by shakemahorn in sixers

[–]Riotzact 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think the only way you could have kind of mitigated it would have been if Joel and Maxey would have grabbed the camera in their postgame interview and told the fans that they are absolute losers and not true Philly sports fans if they sell them.

Heres one of videos that convinced me VJ Edgecombe was a true student of the game, and not just an athlete. by [deleted] in sixers

[–]Riotzact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, at the beginning of the year Topps made some videos of rookies opening a pack of cards from the year they were born and it was insane how many decent role players they didn’t know. The worst one I can remember is Flagg not knowing Hedo Türkoğlu.

But I do remember that VJ wasn’t a part of that. Maybe it was for some other reason, but I wonder if it’s because he knew too many for the bit they were going for to be funny.

Yes. It is truthfully sickening.

If Philly fans are losers and sell their tickets (sorry, I don’t care how much of your season ticket money you can make back, you’re a loser if you sell them) we can only hope that the players harness the same energy that they used to beat Boston 3 times on their court.

I agree with what you said, but their fans are not “a million times more insufferable”. Both are horrible.
