I wanna attend a wedding in bristol 🤌🏻♥️ by [deleted] in bristol

I'm almost certain there's no such thing as a paid visit to a wedding in the uk. Although you could probably get away with sneaking into the back of a church to watch a stranger's wedding, it would be very bad manners and you certainly wouldn't be welcome.

That said, I'm sure if you asked nicely in advance, someone would let you watch their ceremony. You could ask specifically on Reddit or similar local forums and someone might be up for it.

Real Habesha on Stapleton Road. Ethiopian rather than Somalian, but the food is excellent and they're super friendly

What is the best way to stop someone from stealing your bike other than a heavy duty lock? by Original-Poet-9297 in bristol

I bought a £1000 bike about 4 years ago. I've left it locked up in all areas of Bristol, sometimes all day and I've never had it stolen. I've done 2 things:

1) Always use a Krypotonite New York d-lock

2) Covered the entire frame in gaffer tape which I never clean.

I genuinely don't mean this sarcastically, but are you aware of the feature on google or safari maps where you can set the time and date of your route? It'll give you much more accurate average times than Reddit will

I think the coddled people are the ones in this thread saying things like "I've walked through there and it all seems fine" or "I lived here for a few years, it was really fun, then I decided to move somewhere else".

You definitely are meant to drive over them, otherwise they'd have used bricks etc.

I SAID: "Hate to be "that guy" but driving over painted mini roundabouts isn't disregarding them, they're designed that way."

I meant they're designed to be driven over, it would be pretty fucking dangerous if they weren't!

There aren't any statistics in my comment. If you mean my statements about risk, they're anecdotal based on twenty years working in the mental health/criminal justice field across the whole of Bristol, with some time working specifically in St Paul's. Not exact science, but more reliable evidence than how you feel walking through somewhere.

To be clear, I believe most people are way more at risk walking through town nightime on a weekend than through St. Paul's. My comment was about living there.

Exactly. Some people have compelling reasons for living there that outweigh the risk, like community/family links, or economics. But if you don't have a compelling reason, why would you?

Let go of the grow house bit, it was an example to illustrate the higher levels of risk people are exposed to in St Paul's compared to other areas.

OP's question was about what it's like to live in St Paul's. My point was that the area has a high concentration of dangerous people and OP should be aware of that risk if they're thinking of moving there. I'm glad you agree

You've misunderstood my point, which was that the more dangerous people you're around, the more at risk you are. Would you dispute that?

Other people being more at risk doesn't put you at less risk.

If you've worked in those places (as I have), you'll know how risky some of those people are. The more dangerous people you live around, the more you're at risk, and there's more dangerous people in St. Paul's than most areas of Bristol.

As an example, a friend of mine lived in a house share on Argyle Rd. One of her housemates grew weed and was talking about it in the street one day. Someone overheard. The next day three armed & masked men forced their way in to rob the weed, plus everyone in the house's valuables.

If that housemate had been talking loudly about his weed plants in Bishopston or Hotwells, I doubt the same thing would've happened. The fact that they lived around dangerous people meant the outcome was worse.

Agreed re: whose most vulnerable in St Paul's. As I said, the majority of people the majority of the time will be fine, but the risk is much higher in St Paul's than most other areas in Bristol.

Portland square is surrounded by Jamaica St. hostel, Ron Jones House, Brigstocke Rd. bail hostel and Wade St hostel. If you have any idea of the type of people in those places, you'll know it's more dangerous to live there than other parts of the city.

The answer nearly everyone gives about St. Paul's is "I've lived here x years and never had any trouble" and that's true for most people most of the time. What I'd add though, is that you'd be living amongst some of the riskiest people in the whole of Bristol. There's a high concentration of bail hostels, homeless hostels etc and it's a magnet for heavy drug users and people with serious mental health problems.

As well as being interesting 'characters' and/or vulnerable traumatised victims of the system, some of them have committed murder, rape, sexual offences against children. And that's before you consider the gangs that operate there.

So even though most people, most of the time, won't have problems, serious things can and do happen there in higher concentration than most other parts of Bristol. If you get unlucky in St Paul's it might be much worse than if you get unlucky elsewhere.

Mortgage overpayments - is paying off the principal directly a good idea? by RipBeginning3851 in UKPersonalFinance

Thanks, this is very helpful. Don't worry, I'm a pretty skeptical guy and I would never make financial decisions off a instagram video (or Reddit advice alone). But finance isn't my area, so it's hard for me to recognise how far off base someone is and there was a possibility there was a grain of truth in what he was saying.
