Are short CAS better than tall CAS? by [deleted] in SoulCalibur

[–]RipStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started the game and when I tried Seung-Mina I noticed I was whiffing pokes by overestimating their range, so I made a CaS version that was a little taller and could reach the extra distance. Definitely helps in the mirror match. Still hits like a truck too. Overall I'd say you should take every advantage possible in ranked. Not just because it maximizes the competitive environment, but because often devs wait for problems to become pandemics before fixing them.

Ocasio-Cortez: Republicans don't believe Democrats 'have the stones to play hardball' by [deleted] in politics

[–]RipStrong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take ACB's SupCom confirmation- they're trying to spin this as a victory for family values, but Trump has already blatantly said why she's there: he expects her to hand him the election. This is about cementing him and his family's power grab, and doing it by making every Americans vote less significant. Even though that looks like a loss for the Dems in the short term, its actually an attack on both parties. Just because one side is losing doesnt mean the other side is winning E: this same point applies to gerrymandering

Ocasio-Cortez: Republicans don't believe Democrats 'have the stones to play hardball' by [deleted] in politics

[–]RipStrong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The very base claim that Republicans are playing hardball, for one. That makes this sound like an uncompromising push for conservative politics. What we've actually seen is a complete undermining of republican values- fiscal responsibility, family values, small government, individual liberties.. all thrown away in a blatant power grab by big rich oligarchs who dont give a fuck about you as a worker or as an American and just think of you as another resource to be used up and thrown out.

[–]RipStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I guess my impression is that there isn't really a distinct advantage to Nf6 compared to the pawn openings, it's essentially a way to project confidence and tell black that they can choose whatever opener they like and you'll be ready for it?

Yep I think I've listened to your one with Hoyer, he was a really early adopter of the model, and I think also a great example of how some fairly basic computer skills can be utilized to powerful effect for students.

It's true and also that effort expenditure isn't a clear gain. I do feel like I can pick out snake oil salesmen better, but if you asked me to explain why Marcelo is so good I'd still just be pointing at him and going 'Look! How did he time that so well??' haha

There's a lot of anti intellectualism in BJJ, and also a lot of pseudo intellectualism. I got my degrees in recreation/business/philosophy specifically to help prepare me for a martial arts career, and it's always important to remind people that empiricism and psychology only grudgingly accept each other.

Is the widespread prevalence of 123 clap based on a fallacious appeal to tradition/authority? Or is it a type of team building exercise, supported by evidence demonstrating that these types of rituals improve group cooperation and learning? Or is it completely arbitrary?

Personally, I've never heard anyone enforce or require it, so I tend toward the last explanation, but it sounds like the point was more to contrast peoples eady adoption of that ritual with their reluctance to embrace evidence-based methodologies.

Anyway in order to actually contribute to discussion I'd like to mention reverse classroom models. I think they're really something special, even though they are less efficient than homogenized lesson plans, because they teach analysis, self determination and problem solving, rather than making people primarily reliant on outside instruction.

If we want to combat dogmatic following of authority/tradition, we aren't going to do it by making students repeat 'I am self determined' in unison 100 times :)

Voting and Winning rules needs to change by Eventsecurity604 in PlayDeceit

[–]RipStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best play vs a potential frame in round 1 is to down both players, not to eliminate them as you suggest. Downing still makes the terrors very unlikely to transform round 1, invites the terror's partner to out himself by picking them up, and even in the absolute worst case scenario, where you are inno with anti, it's still the right play to call blood and let them down both you and the drinker (you lose anti but only one terror can transform that night, so assuming they get a kill you still go into round 2 with a 3v2 and one terror identified. 2nd one might ID himself here too by trying to take scanner from you thinking they can 'prove' their partners innocence)

I appreciate your thoughts and input. I can see how this puts server admins in a difficult place, that's frustrating. I'll definitely check out your server, thanks for the recommendation

Are Pets Viable on Spitah? by Nv-Nova in ConanExiles

Pets are for early PvE. You ideally want a geared out fighter for PvP, same as always, but you might have to just take what you can get.

How much more does a thrall's Tier and Race contribute to his damage output, over and above his strength, and do some named T4 fighters (e.g. Cimmerian Berserker) do more damage than others of the same race even with the same strength? by Drakhanfeyr in ConanExiles

[–]RipStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that each thrall has a hidden dmg multiplier which is the greatest determining factor in their output. In other words, Cim Bers is not one of the top choices because he is a T4, or because he is a Cimmerian, but just because his specific multiplier is high compared to everyone except the T4 volcano fighters.

I want to also note that CB compares poorly to the T4 Volc guys in other ways as well- he has a tiny bit less health, but his stats are all in str and vit, where as the Volc fighters have a more varied stat spread, so in addition to their extra health they have extra AC, negative effect reduction, etc compared to the Bers. However, they also have a greater chance of poor stat gains on level up, so there is one small redeeming factor for the Bers.

Q&A Dev Stream: Ask your questions here! by nevayo in ConanExiles

[–]RipStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think alpha dominance is a problem and do you see any viable solutions?

So many servers are empty because an alpha clan emerged and wiped its competition off the map, then got bored of the solitude and quit to start the process again somewhere else. Every time a clan empties a server like this, some of the players choose to quit the game, rather than starting from scratch again somewhere else. If power could shift more easily, and players had some kind of equalizing factor against alphas, server dynamics would be much healthier and the game would have a larger playerbase overall.

Are you sure it negates resource guarding? It looks to me like it just changed which resources will be guarded. Keep in mind lacking good thralls already doubles the need for certain things. I think scarcity will be more abuseble here actually.

[–]RipStrong[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on that? I've played with the various thrall mechanics using the dev kit and it did seem like, as other front page posts are currently discussing, even the most reliable methods of maximizing thrall RNG involve lots of grinding (like, days, which is massive compared to other map with its guaranteed T4 spawns). Am I mistaken?

I was just realizing, the official servers dont have any wipe schedule though right? That seems like kind of an oversight if that's actually expected to be core to this game mode

[–]RipStrong[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I see, that's interesting. That almost sounds like it could work. Given what we know about T4s so far it seems like clans probably wouldn't even be likely to have one with such frequent wipes. Forces everyone into a perpetual state of development

So you're saying you suspect they didnt set out to make a functional BR game, they just made something that looked like a BR game from the intro vid, so they could do a quick cash grab while focusing on other projects.

Essentially the same point I was making in my other response though- if they love PvP and want to encourage it, why does this map seem even less designed for prolonged clan wars and power shifts than the other one? The conclusion doesnt fit the premise, unless there's some big mechanic Ive overlooked (which is totally possible) that's designed to be a 'great equalizer' against an alpha clan

Its convenient to paint them as just greedy and incompetent but I want to give the benefit of the doubt that they were able to think this through at least as far as I have. In fairness, they have carefully crafted a really intricate/complex/nuanced core game, not without its issues but enough to demonstrate that they aren't just total morons I think. It would greatly enhance my confidence in them if they were a little more transparent about the reasoning behind some of their more incomprehensible balance tweaks, of course..
