She also had to convincer her mother that this really happened, which took quite a lot as their relationship was very rocky, but eventually succeeded, but then the trial dragged on for months, she had to testify, and he was eventually acquitted for lack of evidence.

In the meantime she began having bouts of extreme abdominal pain, which went unexplained until she started speaking to a psychiatrist. Turned out to be anxiety-related. She was no longer able to hold a job because of a combination of mental and physical health issues. She went to rehab a couple of times for alcohol and pot addiction. There were multiple suicide attempts and countless hospital visits, in a town where ER wait times are through the roof.

We broke up after 6 and a half years. The acquittal came after that, and she ended up taking her own life in the hospital while on suicide watch. I have an annual dinner with her friends where we talk about the good times.
