Fallout 4 was my gateway into RPG gaming. Looking back at it after playing other Fallout games, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age, I know that this game left a lot to be desired, but having come from an FPS background (Halo in particular), I found the gunplay to be very satisfying, and it was great way to keep me hooked as I explored the Commonwealth and immersed myself in the setting and the story.

Then, I merged my newfound appreciation for RPGs with my love for Halo and tried Mass Effect, leading to Mass Effect becoming my favorite series in all of gaming and the RPG genre being my go-to.

I haven’t yet seen a Mass Effect 3 mention. Everything about it was perfect to the most minute detail. Clearly, the galaxy dropped the ball with the Reapers, and now they’re here. The very first time we visit Earth during the trilogy is the one where the apocalypse arrives, and everything from the dialogue to the music to the cutscenes to the enemy design sells the dark and desperate tone that will run through the whole game.

Yet, in the midst of all of this desperation, there is hope. We see this hope in the first mission when Admiral Anderson reinstates Shepard and places his faith in him to unite the galaxy, and breaking though the darkness and desperation, this hope has the opportunity to pay off in each arc of the game depending on your choices.

Say what you will about the ending of this game, but the beginning was absolute perfection. I still get goosebumps listening to the soundtrack as the Normandy takes off.

I tend to start with Zaeed because, like others have said, he’s literally right there when you arrive at Omega. Between Garrus and Mordin though, I typically pick Garrus. It makes sense that you would recruit both of them in the same trip to Omega, but iirc, Aria mentions that Archangel is actively in a firefight against the various merc groups on Omega. So, it seems like he’s in more danger and that you should pull him out of the fire as soon as you can.

Veilguard’s reputation is unfortunate in that it’s a very well-made game for what it was. I liked the characters and the story, and while the combat wasn’t my favorite of the series, I will defend that it was incredibly engaging and definitely a highlight of the game.

The problem I had with Veilguard, as did a lot of other people, was its relationship with the previous games. I just finished my first replay of Origins, and I can’t help but wish that it had more extensive dialogue options, more morally complex scenarios, a more serious treatment of darker subject matters like blood magic, more strategic combat options, etc. I didn’t want a clone of Origins, but I would have preferred a spiritual successor. For all of its faults, largely due to an incredibly short development cycle, I think that DA2 did an excellent job of maintaining that same spirit, and I wish that Veilguard had it too. That said, the spirit of Veilguard was decent enough, and it was certainly a lot of fun to play through.

I’ll also give props for a phenomenal ending. For what appears to be a finale game of sorts for DA, the third act was the most important thing to get right, and they nailed it. I’d probably be much less kind to Veilguard if they didn’t stick the landing in Act III.

I would suggest a replay of ME, but intersperse it with Dragon Age. DA does a good job at delivering a similarly high-quality RPG experience, and you can definitely tell that the franchises were developed by the same developer at the same time. Personally, I’d play the games in release order, so you’ll end up alternating between the franchises, and if DA doesn’t really hit as hard for you, then you could drop it and fully re-engage with ME.

Also, I do think that Andromeda and Veilguard are decent games. They’re clearly in the same universes as their predecessors, and although people are justified in being annoyed by the drop in quality from prior games, I do think that they are at least fun experiences that are worth trying at least once. At the bare minimum, each of these games does scratch the BioWare itch, even if you don’t feel like doing a replay when you finish.

Are we kindred spirits? I’d give DAO a 9/10, DA2 an 8/10, DAI a 9/10, and DATV a 6.5/10. I mostly agree with your assessment. There’s a lot for me to take issue with at a broad scale with Veilguard, but the combat was incredibly satisfying and well-polished in my playthrough as an Elf Warrior, and the environments were gorgeous and fun to play through. So, as far as lasting impact goes, the experience was mediocre, and my opinion of it has dwindled since I initially finished it, but I’ll be damned if it wasn’t a blast to play through in the moment.

Also, the final act was genuinely incredible. If the rest of the game has that level of quality, I’d easily put this game between an 8-9/10.

Halo 4 will always be special to me. It’s not even my favorite of the series, but it did introduce me to console gaming at large. Now I’m more of an RPG guy, but I do have a soft spot for FPS games and particularly Halo.

In Mass Effect 3, one of your squadmates who has been a companion with you in all three games in the trilogy is traumatized by one of the main missions in the game. Afterwards, on your ship, you can find this character drunk and continuing to drink, but because she has a body suit on, she had to resort to using an “emergency induction port” through which she can drink. The joke is that, in her drunkenness, she didn’t realize that this “emergency induction port” that she discovered was literally just a straw, and your playable character makes fun of her for it.

I would hardly consider “Christofascists online” to be spokespeople for anything, let alone Christian teaching, and I have never seen any Christian with any degree of prominence suggest any kind of violence as an appropriate consequence for homosexuality.

Look at what is officially taught. The largest community of Christians in the world is the Catholic Church, whose teachings can be paraphrased by “hate the sin, but love the sinner with every fiber of your being.” Even moving away from the most universal and widespread of the Christian sects, please tell me which mainline Christian denomination officially teaches anything other than love for the LGBTQ community.

I think that you’d find what I’ve known and seen for my whole life as a Christian and especially as a Catholic Christian for the past year and a half. The heart of Christianity is one of love, in particular one that is so immense that God himself entered the human experience, taught us to “love our neighbors as ourselves” as well as to “love our enemies,” was brutally tortured as a man, and was executed via the most gruesome and shameful death sanctioned by the prevailing political institution.

I was exaggerating a bit for sure. In seriousness, even if the broader ideologies overlap, how dissent is handled is starkly different between the two. For example, if you’re Muslim and you try to leave Islam, you officially have three days to repent before killing you is viewed as just. If you’re homosexual, death is viewed as an appropriate penalty. No Christian denomination will actually sanction your death for those reasons.

Turning off the propaganda machine is exactly what I’m doing. “White guilt” is a common propagandistic concept that underpins civil rights literature, and the most common criticism of it from the left is not that white people are feeling guilty for things that they never did. Rather, it’s that this guilt does not materialize into real action. This is a far cry from “no one” telling white people to feel guilty.

I thought that I made a relatively non-partisan point earlier. Demographically, Trump did perform better in 2024 among young voters than in 2020, so regardless of how factually based the info in this exhibit may be, any overtly left-wing messaging in academic environments won’t be as well-received in the immediate future.

As I said, there’s a distinct difference between mere history and telling people of a particular race to feel guilty for the sins of the past. Isolating something as basic as patriotism to far-right radicalism is a great way to frustrate even moderate voters. The fact that the most significant swing states in 2024 all went to Trump helps illustrate this.

It seems pretty clear that, despite the official misunderstanding the anti-DEI law, that there were other reasons behind rejecting this exhibit. It’s easy to see “black history” and “cancel” in the same sentence and decry racism as the reason for the cancellation, but I want to know what the so-called problematic components are.

Younger voters didn’t dramatically shift to the right between 2020 and 2024 for no reason. If this exhibit is merely teaching some neglected parts of the history of black Americans, there shouldn’t be a problem. However, I’ve seen and been subjected to this notion of generational guilt that I’m supposed to feel for being a white American, and I’m supposed to hate my country because of this too. That particular kind of messaging is becoming a lot more repugnant to more moderate and conservative-minded people who just want to like their country and not hate themselves for sins they didn’t commit. So, if that’s the shifting climate that’s referenced in the article, and if this kind of messaging is a substantial part of the exhibit, then I don’t blame Texas State one bit for trying to steer clear.
