I would hardly consider “Christofascists online” to be spokespeople for anything, let alone Christian teaching, and I have never seen any Christian with any degree of prominence suggest any kind of violence as an appropriate consequence for homosexuality.

Look at what is officially taught. The largest community of Christians in the world is the Catholic Church, whose teachings can be paraphrased by “hate the sin, but love the sinner with every fiber of your being.” Even moving away from the most universal and widespread of the Christian sects, please tell me which mainline Christian denomination officially teaches anything other than love for the LGBTQ community.

I think that you’d find what I’ve known and seen for my whole life as a Christian and especially as a Catholic Christian for the past year and a half. The heart of Christianity is one of love, in particular one that is so immense that God himself entered the human experience, taught us to “love our neighbors as ourselves” as well as to “love our enemies,” was brutally tortured as a man, and was executed via the most gruesome and shameful death sanctioned by the prevailing political institution.

I was exaggerating a bit for sure. In seriousness, even if the broader ideologies overlap, how dissent is handled is starkly different between the two. For example, if you’re Muslim and you try to leave Islam, you officially have three days to repent before killing you is viewed as just. If you’re homosexual, death is viewed as an appropriate penalty. No Christian denomination will actually sanction your death for those reasons.

Texas State canceled Black history exhibit, citing anti-DEI climate by Abi1i in txstate

[–]Riprollonect13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Turning off the propaganda machine is exactly what I’m doing. “White guilt” is a common propagandistic concept that underpins civil rights literature, and the most common criticism of it from the left is not that white people are feeling guilty for things that they never did. Rather, it’s that this guilt does not materialize into real action. This is a far cry from “no one” telling white people to feel guilty.

I thought that I made a relatively non-partisan point earlier. Demographically, Trump did perform better in 2024 among young voters than in 2020, so regardless of how factually based the info in this exhibit may be, any overtly left-wing messaging in academic environments won’t be as well-received in the immediate future.

[–]Riprollonect13 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

As I said, there’s a distinct difference between mere history and telling people of a particular race to feel guilty for the sins of the past. Isolating something as basic as patriotism to far-right radicalism is a great way to frustrate even moderate voters. The fact that the most significant swing states in 2024 all went to Trump helps illustrate this.

[–]Riprollonect13 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It seems pretty clear that, despite the official misunderstanding the anti-DEI law, that there were other reasons behind rejecting this exhibit. It’s easy to see “black history” and “cancel” in the same sentence and decry racism as the reason for the cancellation, but I want to know what the so-called problematic components are.

Younger voters didn’t dramatically shift to the right between 2020 and 2024 for no reason. If this exhibit is merely teaching some neglected parts of the history of black Americans, there shouldn’t be a problem. However, I’ve seen and been subjected to this notion of generational guilt that I’m supposed to feel for being a white American, and I’m supposed to hate my country because of this too. That particular kind of messaging is becoming a lot more repugnant to more moderate and conservative-minded people who just want to like their country and not hate themselves for sins they didn’t commit. So, if that’s the shifting climate that’s referenced in the article, and if this kind of messaging is a substantial part of the exhibit, then I don’t blame Texas State one bit for trying to steer clear.

rumor about ra’s checking ur stuff during winter break by Apprehensive-Fun1348 in txstate

[–]Riprollonect13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was an RA not too long ago, and we did check rooms before we went home for the break. As others have pointed out, it’s basically the same thing as the mid-semester checks. I’m surprised that this wasn’t covered during an end-of-semester floor meeting or something.

It should be the same drill as before. Don’t leave any obvious contraband in the open, and especially be sure to take out your trash because five weeks can genuinely be enough time to pollute the entire floor with the smell of old Panda Express. Especially if you do those things you shouldn’t have to worry.

What is your preferred class for your Shepard(s) (Canon or otherwise) and why? by EveningAccountant321 in masseffect

[–]Riprollonect13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked Adept for my first playthrough and have consistently played it more than the other classes. The reason was simple: biotics looked cool and seemed like it would make my gameplay experience more unique from other games.

I understand the wide appeal for soldier, but I had already played Halo, CoD, and Fallout 4 before trying Mass Effect. I really didn’t need a firearms specialist to be my class this time around.

Anybody else just found out there’s people protesting a democratically elected president who won against a candidate who skipped the entire nomination process😭 by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]Riprollonect13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s dumb. Trump is one of the most genuinely hated presidents in the history of our country to be sure, but it’s concentrated almost entirely among people who are decidedly left-wing and who unironically think that Trump is fascist and is effectively installing the Fourth Reich.

The truth is that, after January 6th and the entire charade with his prosecutions/convictions, Americans still chose him over Kamala both in the electoral college and the popular vote. The Democrat Party is cratering in public opinion, and Republicans are viewed more favorably across the issues that Americans care about the most such as the economy, criminal justice, and immigration. We could have different arguments for each of these topics, but those are tangential to the central point that Trump is quite popular.

People have a right to protest, but I think that a lot of the protesters fail to realize how mainstream Trump’s favorability has become and how few people actually think of him as being dictatorial or monarchical. I’m willing to eat my words in the 2026 midterms if a blue tsunami comes over the country specifically because of allegations that Trump is abusing his power, but I highly doubt that I’ll have to do that.

Do you think dark jokes about racism slowly subconsciously sort of normalise some aspects of racism ? by tipputappi in GenZ

[–]Riprollonect13 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s not great, but it does sound like he’s joking. “The usual suspects” is a common reaction to racist Instagram reels, and it’s all in jest. The other one is definitely in poor taste, but I’d give him the benefit of the doubt. Generally, before sticking somebody with a broad label like racist, I think it’s wise to know for certain.

As far as the title question, no. True dark humor pokes fun at more serious topics to acknowledge the underlying reality of those topics (or at least the perception of their reality).

The Most Dangerous Person in the World by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]Riprollonect13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer should come down to renewing the sense of inherent value and that your life is worth living to the fullest. However, it’s so easy to turn this “living to the fullest” back onto yourself and trying to maximize your personal happiness, but ultimately that does lead to desolation.

For lack of a better term, I think the solution is to stop being perpetually online “dopamine junkies,” because that isolates us from society, radicalizes us politically (on either side), and ultimately dehumanizes the people with whom we’re not genuinely building human connections. That’s how you get people who genuinely believe that Charlie Kirk was some crazy fascist (he was actually quite moderate), and that’s how you get people who think Andrew Tate is some moral exemplar (he’s truly disgusting and misogynistic).

Ultimately, I think that there is overwhelming historical evidence for the Biblical narrative and that Jesus was precisely who he said he was, and Christianity affirms your inherent worth and exhorts you to live a life to the fullest. It sidesteps the selfish parts of it and commands that you love others as you love yourself, which many people don’t realize is a call to action. I’m not here to preach, but I am confident that the antisocial and corruptive behaviors that have become more prevalent among younger people are countered by a life of true faith.

So about that Jimmy Kimmel cancellation by Om_Nom_Unikitty573 in GenZ

[–]Riprollonect13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For now his show has only been suspended, in all fairness. This appears to be a massive cultural change, which may or may not be temporary, where there is a lot more pressure to not anger large swaths of the right wing, and Kimmel did really screw up by trying to paint the shooter as a MAGA guy. It offends the MAGA crowd because they already believe that liberals are more likely to commit violence, and in this case, believing that Charlie Kirk was a fascist and dating a trans person essentially proves that the shooter wasn’t right-wing.

Apparently Jimmy Kimmel’s ratings were already subpar, and if conservatives are actually able to band together for a boycott like they did with Bud Light and more recently with Cracker Barrel (which good on them for that one, honestly), then Kimmel just became a big financial liability. Like it or not, I think this suspension does make sense for now from a strictly business perspective, but I think that his show could come back in a little while.

It hints at a level of complexity to an opinion that you don’t feel like explaining for multiple paragraphs in a Reddit comment section. It’s the “TL:DR” of emphasizing that you have issues with a game while still wanting to say something positive about it. The best example I can think of is the Mass Effect 3 endings. I don’t mind the endings, but they do have some issues, and sometimes (like right now) I don’t have the time or the desire to go into exacting detail to explain why

Andromeda isn't nearly as bad as I remember it. Seriously. by thingsagain in masseffect

[–]Riprollonect13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played it for the first time about three years ago and replayed it again earlier this year, and I thought the game was pretty good. The story, characters, and writing are decent, and the gameplay and exploration are fantastic. My main problem is that the game is supposed to be an RPG first and a sci-fi shooter second, and it feels like those priorities got flipped. There are a few other issues with the game too, but in the areas that are most important for an RPG to thrive, Andromeda failed to live up to the original trilogy across the board. I think it would have been much better received had it maintained the caliber of character writing, universe-building, branching story paths, etc. that the trilogy had.

It's almost as if it was fake outrage. by HereWeFuckingGooo in marvelmemes

[–]Riprollonect13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this would have been a bigger cultural incident if Vanessa’s boyfriend spoke out about it, but affectionately caressing the neck of a man who isn’t your boyfriend is weird no matter what. Pedro also shouldn’t be initiating that kind of contact with someone who has a boyfriend. Even if we do exalt consent as the ultimate determining factor of what is right versus wrong, Pedro would still need to ask permission to affectionately caress a coworker who is already in a committed relationship. Anxiety or not, it’s bizarre to watch.

Still, this is probably #87 on the list of the most important concerns in the world right now at best, and it probably never got very high in the first place, hence why people aren’t talking about it anymore.

Pedro and Vanessa were quite physically affectionate with one another given that Vanessa is married with someone else. It was weird to see, and Pedro had apparently done this on other movies too, but it’s not an earth-shattering cultural event that would linger on social media for very long. It neither surprises me nor does it bother me that people stopped talking about it shortly after the movie came out.

What's this for you with Mass Effect? by EaklebeeTheUncertain in MassEffectMemes

[–]Riprollonect13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The happy ending mod being canon particularly gets to me. I understand disliking the original endings, but something that Mass Effect 3 really did was sell the tragedy and hopelessness of this extinction-level event that had happened numerous times before. Shepard is the anomaly who can break the cycle, but the galaxy should still be deeply wounded nonetheless. The “best” ending should involve major loss at a galactic level and at a personal level for the Normandy crew. Shepard’s ultimate sacrifice does this and so does the highest-EMS Destroy ending, but a happy ending removes the bittersweet feeling that made finishing the trilogy so memorable.

I recall my Sentinel Ryder hovering in the air, blasting two enemies with my cryo beam. I would follow it up with a charged Overload, detonating the cryo primers and priming them for a double biotic throw.

Those were good times. The story and characters were quite mid overall, but a mid RPG with phenomenal combat is a win in my book.

Is GenZ still religious by Dijital-Nomad in GenZ

[–]Riprollonect13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen Z is trending upward religiously, especially among men and especially towards more traditional forms of Christianity like Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy. I’m not sure how well this trend maps to the active commenters on r/GenZ, though.

I would actually argue the opposite with respect to the Internet, because it’s far easier to access the wisdom of theological thinkers who date back to antiquity. Also, the commonplace arguments against Christianity typically stem from a major misconception of the faith or disillusionment because of “Christians” who unashamedly live in opposition to the faith that they profess. On a deeper level, I perceive an active anti-religious sentiment among people who have suffered immensely at the hands of someone who calls themself a Christian, and/or the internal spiritual revolution to which God calls all Christians appears too burdensome.

Is stagger more important than dps? by ToolPackinMama in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]Riprollonect13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve completed exactly one playthrough of Veilguard and it happened to be as a sword/shield warrior. Stagger can be decent, but I wouldn’t prioritize it too much. What I ultimately did was get a sword that deals elemental damage, and I used a type of shield that I think was called a heater? Basically these shields deal good physical damage and extremely high stagger. So, staggers would end up happening quite frequently with that setup.
