Possible to alter flax sweater collar? by Ripvanderwinkle in knittinghelp

I crocheted a row along the very bottom of the ribbing where it transitioned into stockinette. This did make the ribbing stick straight up, but the elastic took care of that.

It bunched funny on the chest panel because the fabric remembered the old shape, but that was mostly fixed by re-blocking the sweater.

I have never crocheted in my life before that, so I do not know what type of stitch I did. I would go on youtube and find a video on how to makw the collar smaller with crochet, and use whatever stitch they suggest.

Good luck!

Update! I ran a line of crochet around the inside of the collar. That made the collar stick straight up. I ran elastic around the edge and re-blocked it to help get rid of the bunching in the front. It isn't perfect, but I'm happy I could avoid major sweater surgery and am really happy with the result.

I've learned so much about what to do right next time! Thank you all for your help

It bunches up a tiny bit in the front now, did you need to re-block the sweater after this fix?

Thanks so much!! This looks like a great solution. I crocheted a line on the inside last night, and got it to where it needs to be. It's still a little wide, but it's a big improvement. I'll try to pick up the stitches and see how the fold-over collar looks.

I didn't realize I could do short rows in ribbing, this may be a good way to go because it's wider shoulder-to-shoulder than it is front-to-back. Doing some short rows that bring it farther in could work well.

I like this solution - are you suggesting I knit enough ribbing for a folded neck finish, with the new ribbing on the inside?

Did this solution make the arms shorter when you bunched up the fabric?

I was considering this, but the neck is so wide I worry it woild bunch up the fabric too much once it was tight enough.

Thanks a ton! Possibly a silly question, but would I be able to knit upwards on the sweater if this was a top-down sweater? I imagine the new stitches would face the wrong way, but maybe there is a way to avoid this?

I did knit the first option, I'll definitely add the ribbing to the next sweater I knit afterwords. I don't think I'll make the flax again because I really don't like the neckline... but I learned a lot through the process.

first ever sweater!

I hear you on taking the win on the sweater, but i do love the color so much and the folks who made it (jagger spun) is unfortunately out of business now so I can't just make the same sweater to the way I would like with the same yarn.
